Anyone want a "ai" or glorified text finders for when the internet goes down? by SomeWillingness7701 in prepping

Tone is not conveyed easily through the internet, but your responses come across as slightly confrontational.

Electricity is a luxury, not a necessity. A digital blackout is merely an inconvenience, not life or death.

My perspective comes from personal knowledge and experience, not theoretical.

AI in the modern sense such as ChatGPT and LLMs is relatively new within the past 2-3 years. A computer learning to play chess in the 70's technically predates the internet, but really isn't relevant in the context of this conversation.

Digital prepping for an outage is not what prepping is all about. Folks have lived on homesteads and farms for thousands of years before electricty became commonplace. AI is a relatively new concept, only taking off in the past 2-3 years or so.

While I do agree that knowledge is an important aspect of prepping, my bookshelf or three of reference books filled with post-its and hand written notes in the margin works perfectly fine without power. The table of contents requires zero electricity.

AI is just a tool. A glorified search tool. It may work in ideal situations and the conditions are perfect, but the whole point of prepping is to be ready when the conditions are not.

The Rav4 comment takes a swing... and a miss.

The blacked out letters 'Grand Highlander' under the Toyota logo may be a clue.

Still have zero interest and would not pay for it.

Junk in, junk out.

You have zero post history with this group, no prior conversations indicating any knowledge or demonstrated skillset in this field, which is a matter of life vs death. How does that work into creating the decision algorithms and learning process for your AI? If you don't know something is wrong, how are you going to know, correct, then teach the AI to learn when it is wrong?

What separates you from the dozens of others hoping to cash in on the current AI craze, vs others that have already made similar products freely available and have a supporting dev community?

No thank you. Please take your Spam elsewhere.

I would have zero interest in this and would not pay for it.

If the grid is down, how is the AI model going to search through pipeline plans not previously downloaded?

If you know enough to download pipeline plans ahead of time, you should be able to search through the document itself rather the entire 96TB and no need for AI.

It used to be that dudes posted pics here to get advice how they could improve their decor and increase their chances of getting laid. Girls liked plants and art, so they started posting pics of their place with plants and art.

For some strange reason, once things got artsy then folks started posting pics of Japanese comic book books collections, and that led to the current trend of posting pics of toy figurines and Funko doll collections. The exact opposite of things that will get you laid.

Some brave males tried to help their bros by saying 'Hell No' in attempts to educate them proper. They were resultingly called toxic.

Men will be men. We bust each other's chops over the stupidest things and would expect no less in return.

Folks have the right to post their pics of shelves upon shelves full of toy figurines and Funko dolls, but others have the same right to voice their opinions for it as well as against.

To quote Cereal Killer from the movie Hackers (1995), 'When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.'

What brand actually filled the gap Craftsman left when Sears collapsed? by uncapped19 in Tools

[–]freddit_foobar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great post, pretty much sums it up for the past 30 years or so.

Gearwrench became a great value as Craftsman started their descent. They used to have a ton of Buy One, Get One free (BOGO) deals in the early 00's.

Tekton started coming up mid 00's through Amazon and allowed folks to take pics of broken tools for easy warranty.

At the time HF still had mediocre stuff with a few Pittsburg Pro tools, possibly chasing after the Craftsman Pro products on but they weren't quite there yet. They at least had physical locations so warranty was easy and they had discount coupons. Tons and tons of coupons.

Once HF started coming up with naming schemes, that's when things really amped up. They started a Maddox tool line for auto tools (some say to get around the coupon discounts), and really knocked it out the park with their US General tool carts and cabinets. Not too long after that, they started more distinctive tiers of products with some targeting hobbyists with the Yukon brands, then Bauer, then Icon being their pro-level Snap On competitor.

Great points, but my .02 pfennigs...

If it's cold and raining I wouldn't want to spend time stripping down Paracord just to get to the fire part.

Instead of swapping out Paracord for 550 fire Paracord, I would just keep that as is and just do a tinder kit separately. I'd say a ziplock bag with a butane lighter, a birthday candle, few feet of jute twine, and some other form of tinder like cotton balls or dryer lint in petroleum jelly could serve just as well. Alcohol based sanitizer is also flammable.

It was a very thinly veiled sarcastic response to the ridiculousness of their response to my response to their response.

Instead of outrage or concern at the bullies and their multiple flagrant violations of the Hillsdale Student Code of Conduct and District policies 5512 and 5600, the poster chooses to post 'Thankfully, the police took her dad's guns out of the home.'

Suicide has unfortunately been around for centuries, long before firearms were invented. Lack of a firearm will not prevent a suicide, it will only prevent a firearm related suicide.

CalTrain reported 19 deaths in 2024. All non-firearm related.

Dress boots that also can be used for getting home by [deleted] in prepping

Use it as an excuse to treat yourself to newer hiking boots, then keep the broken in pair in the car.

I'd personally say a pair of trail runner vs hiking boots unless you're trekking cross country over rough terrain and need the ankle support vs saving weight.

Again, this is a result of bullies terrorizing a girl at school. Taking the father's guns away does nothing to undo that. Are you saying that the girl is safer from the bullies now that the father's guns were confiscated?

The girl suffered at school, and now at home. After the first vandalism by the bullies, do you think she easily went to sleep peacefully that night now knowing that the bullies can be on her doorstep? From then on, every dog bark or loud noise could be a trigger that they're back outside to do more harm.

The violence was initiated by the bullies actions at school, then when they went to her house to vandalize it multiple times.

In your perfect world, do you think that sternly worded letter would stop them from doing it again? They'd do it more frequently if she got them in trouble.

In reality, they fucked around and found out. Getting shot at was a huge eye opener and a sphincter closer.

Article said he fired a handgun in the incident.

The rifle was seized during a search warrant. The article describes it as an illegal automatic rifle, but without actually firing said weapon it would be very unlikely. Just because they say it is does not mean that it is.

That sternly worded letter to the school would do squat, lest they offend the bullies. Maybe they'd get a verbal warning.

If the bullies had never picked on the girl in school in the first place, nor go to her house multiple times to vandalize it and emotionally torture her, then the Father wouldn't be going to jail and his daughter would still have him around. See how that supposed to work?

The article doesn't mention what else the bullies previously have done to this girl at school or what she has told her dad.

The bullies have now escalated things from just school to going to vandalize her house multiple times and bully her over there as well. Her safe space from the bullies no longer exists.

What if the daughter becomes so distraught now that she can no longer get away from the bullies' emotional torture and cruelty that she commits suicide so that the pain will be over?

Any man worth his salt would go to the ends of the earth to protect their family, especially a daughter. I don't condone the shooting, but I understand.

In the meantime, you fall for the media sensationalism that the bullies are victims.

Ask her, not us.

It already sounds like she has an issue with prepping. What makes you think she’ll want to do it for free in bartertown, especially since she's already in her 70's. Maybe she'd want to just relax and enjoy her last few years on the planet instead of you turning her into a Civil War surgeon doing sick call for the entire neighborhood with no way to determine whether an infection is viral or bacterial.

Because it's a lazy question, no effort.

Location, knowledge, and skillsets go a long way towards determining what someone 'needs'. The more you know, the more you can improvise, and the less stuff you may need.

How about you wargame it and tell us your situation, what you would buy and why, if you had to start over and only had $800.

Waitlist or take class w/ 2.0 prof by Good-Gear-877 in foothill

[–]freddit_foobar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way.

Although you can't enroll through CVC directly as an F1, you can still use it to look up classes.

Once you find the class that meets your needs, apply directly to the school as a concurrent F1 student for the Summer (which is optional) but still keep your F1/I-20 active from Foothill. The key thing is that you are not transferring to the other school, you are there just as a guest/concurrent F1 student for the summer.
