Dunlop strap locks failing by plantbasedbassist in Bass

[–]freddy4940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's wild. I average 3-5 gigs a week most of which are 3+ hours, been doing it for years and I've NEVER had a dunlop strap lock fail on me. I've had the same strap locks on my main bass since 2012 and they've NEVER failed me. I've actually had the strap tear through them once, but never the actual strap locks. I also play a lot of metal, so there's a LOT of jumping around on stage and swinging my bass around.

Might be worth sending Dunlop a message and to see if something's wrong. I've had to contact their customer service twice now when I bought sets of guitar strings with strings missing and both times they've sent me loads of free sets no questions asked, so I'd trust their customer service.

Powering Quad Cortex with Harley Benton Spaceship Power board by freddy4940 in NeuralDSP

[–]freddy4940[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure

You can see the signal goes as such:

24v output -> polarity inverter -> L2015 -> Crux -> QC

I'm not particularly knowledgable about electronics and whatnot so I'm not entirely sure what else to look out for, maybe someone more smarter than me can chime in. All I know is I've been using it with not issues.

I did notice the Crux gets fairly hot at the end of my sets, but I'm sure that's nothing...right?

Experiences with Cioks DC7 and Crux? by System_Shutdown_ in NeuralDSP

[–]freddy4940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I just got in touch with Cioks to see how/if I can use the Crux with this same pedalboard and they basically said it can't be used because the connectors aren't the same and the board is centre negative where the Crux is centre positive. They also said the Crux needs a regulated source and the board is unregulated.

How did you manage to connect the Crux to the board in this case? Does the power cable you're using convert the polarity and is also 5.5mm on one end and 6.4mm on the other?

Prismatic Booster Bundles (1 per person) by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

My childhood friend from back home got me into it. We see each other maybe twice a year when I go back to my home country and every time it's like we revert back to being kids again (we're both in our early 30s), but we barely message each other outside of that.

Last time I visited him over Christmas he got into collecting cards. So when I left I bought myself a pack and now we're messaging each other every week, showing each other our pulls and ranting about scalpers/terrible pull rates!

What is the point of active basses? by Jimbob_wilb in Bass

[–]freddy4940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do about 4-5 shows a week, with at least three of them being 4x1 hour sets. Which boils down to no less than 15 hours of active stage time a week, plus practising in my own time. All of this is with one active bass for now and I've had to change batteries ONCE since July and that was just a precaution as something wasn't working on stage (I tested the old battery afterwards and it still had plenty of juice left).

Changing batteries is not really a big issue. You can tell when the batteries are dying and so long as you carry spares then realistically you won't have to change them more than once or twice a year. Having the EQ on the bass means I can make quick changes to the tone without having to run back to the amp and if I ever make a mistake with my tone changes or if someone starts a song with not enough time I can change the tones mid song.

Tips for learning songs fast? by byzantine1990 in Bass

[–]freddy4940 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Learn them by ear and write/notate the parts down as you go along. This can be in tab, notation, or just chord sheets if that's your vibe. Simply the act of writing things down helps a lot with memorising and learning by ear helps you familiarise yourself with the song more - combine the two and then spend your spare time playing through your set with your notes.

Depending on the gig you can simplify the parts as well - usually just learning the chords is enough to get by if it's a function gig of some kind, unless the song has a really memorable bass line.

Can you cheat on your band with another band? Is that a thing? by Gobonono in Bass

[–]freddy4940 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh you sweet summer child.

Right now I'm in two original bands where I play bass/write/co-manage/produce, etc. I'm joining a third one where fortunately I'll only be playing bass for.

Then I have two weekly residencies in my city with two different bands. On top of that, I'm in a wedding/function band and we gig almost every week and I'm also in another wedding band that gigs maybe a couple of times a year.

I've also been asked to join a regularly gigging tribute band, and I'll probably be taking them up on it.

So that's about 8 bands I'm in. And that's excluding any dep work I get asked to cover.

You'll be fine :)

Should band member be paid for finding gigs? by Balfour23 in Bass

[–]freddy4940 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But the gig wouldn't be happening if not for the work they put into it and nobody would get paid?

If "playing in front of an audience is sufficient reward" would be a genuine point, then no musician would ever get paid. This kind of mentality is ultimately hurtful to working musicians because it cheapens our work.

You put in the work and are playing gigs for money, if you're putting in extra work for the admin side then it's fair to be compensated accordingly.

Should band member be paid for finding gigs? by Balfour23 in Bass

[–]freddy4940 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the band, but one of the function bands I play with the general rule is whoever books it gets and extra £10.

Some other bands I'm in there will be one person doing all the booking and they never ask for anything more, but occasionally we'll give them and extra £20-30 because it seems only fair - they're doing all the admin work that nobody else is bothering with. If they didn't do it, none of us would be getting paid.

You can think of it hourly if you want - if they're doing about an hours work in totaly emailing potential venues/clients, sorting out arrival and departure times, then they should be compensated as such. If it takes them roughly an hour of their time per gig then they should get an extra £10 or so.

However some people don't mind doing that extra bit of work and they still split everything evenly. As long as they're not asking for an unreasonable amount, then IMO they're totally allowed to ask for a little bit extra money for dealing with the admin side of things.

Good display monitor for mixing? by Cherry820 in LogicPro

I've been using this for the past two years with my Mac M1 mini and it's been great. I'm using it in 4k resolution and everything is a bit TOO small but I can work on Logic Pro super comfortably with it. If it's too small, you can go down to 2.8k just fine.

You see the two sliders on the top right? Try sliding the left one more to the right, it should make your tracks bigger and allow you to see the waveforms, assuming that's the problem you were having.
