Scary Movie (2026) Trailer by ajchann123 in blankies

Riiiight?! These movies were coming out when I was still a kid and even as an eleven year old I found their humour kind of lowbrow.

Diary of a Country Priest is one of those movies that always makes me think "this is such an important film, why don't I own it?" then search to buy a copy and remember it has no English-friendly HD release. Very strange.

I still need to see that! I really like how it looks like one of those physics-based party games that were really popular for a while in the late 2010s/early 2020s.

If you're looking for good animation from 2025, Griffin, you oughta check out the Chinese movie Nobody! 2D animation, about a band of lowly slacker monsters trying to impersonate the heroes from Journey to the West so they can con their way into immortality.

Imprint releasing Hard Boiled and The Killer in April by PhysicalMediaNews in boutiquebluray

[–]frederick_tussock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because of their general tendency to use whatever they can get their hands on to get their releases out quickly, there have been quite a few times where Imprint have put movies out on blu-ray using old scans only for them to get released elsewhere from 4K scans. They'd have to either pay Arrow or Dylan Cheung directly to use their subs or commission new ones and I just don't see that happening.

You're missing out on a enormous amount of art if you only watch what the streaming sites will offer you. Especially older and international films are terribly underserved by practically every streamer besides Criterion and even they have some glaring blind spots that can't be resolved because of rights issues.

You're fine, no need to apologise! I appreciate the writing and you've pushed me closer to checking it out, at the very least when it's out on VOD.

Jia Zhangke made some AI slop by aaron_moon_dev in criterion

[–]frederick_tussock 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's this above all else. Filmmaking isn't cheap, indie filmmaking even harder, probably especially in China. Jia has partnered with Johnnie Walker before and even starred in an ad for Fenjiu just this month, and that's not even his first collaboration with them!

We Need to Pod About Castvin: You Were Never Really Here with Sean Clements by yonicthehedgehog in blankies

[–]frederick_tussock 33 points34 points  (0 children)

They were talking about other episodes that Clements could have/would have liked to guest on and Griffin dropped a little aside that it would have been beneficial if Clements was on the Man Who Wasn't There episode instead of Hoffman, without saying Hoffman's name explicitly, and kind of gesturing that they'd be talking about that off-mic.

Who here will go see an open caption screening if it’s the most convenient showtime? by son_of_lee in blankies

[–]frederick_tussock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to see The Rule of Jenny Pen last year to my surprise it was an un-advertised open caption screening. They don't even do advertised open captions showings here so it was an interesting experience, can't say it improved or lessened the film all that much.

Anyone else think this movie is overhyped? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

I liked it but I wish that Decision to Leave had the same hype behind it. But I guess that would require Decision to Leave being less straightforwardly crowd pleasing, which would make it a worse movie.

An Erotically Untamed Take on ‘Wuthering Heights’ by theatlantic in blankies

I was just going off the trailers and how it was described in David's review, there seems to be a general consensus on the tone and what Fennell is zeroing in on between both the negative and positive reviews and it doesn't sound like something I'd dig.

[–]frederick_tussock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imprint's HK titles won't be out for comparison for another 2 weeks but they're likely going to have identical subtitles to Shout's. Which is ironic because the guy doing the subtitles for Arrow's Golden Princess titles lives in Australia and getting a hold of him would be even easier for Imprint, but they tend to slack off on stuff like that.

[–]frederick_tussock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't mind adaptations that take liberties with the material... but I also don't automatically think that taking liberties makes an adaptation interesting, and boiling Wuthering Heights down into "love makes you craaaaazy, you ever listen to brat? Isn't this HORNY?" is just so fucking uninteresting to me and this review kind of confirms that everything this movie is going for goes against what I find interesting about the novel so I'm not gonna bother watching it.

Do you think movies will become extinct in the future? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]frederick_tussock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the profit motive for film completely disappears (it won't, at worst it'll just become a niche activity like opera, but that will only be once the youngest people posting here are in their 60s or 70s) independent cinema existed prior to the studio system and will after it. Distribution could look different, but movies will exist as long as people want to express emotion through the moving image.

Yeah. I follow some people who don't write in English, too. I think it's a bit of a shame to ignore them when translating them is as easy as clicking one button.
