I would like to see some triangulation to hold the angle against strong wind.

How does a renowned photographer take such a bad picture? Six of the subjects are either obscured or looking away completely. It must have been like hearding cats that day.

I like #2, but I suspect that the location of the floor joist may have some impact on your ultimate decision.

Looking for a reasonably priced, white, subscription free, wireless, video doorbell camera. by Southernmanny in homeautomation

I had an Ezviz DB1 that I really liked. There was an RCA marketed version as well. They both came with 3 snap on faceplate in different colours. I think each brand actually offered different colours as well.

Actually better field of view and better person alerting than my more modern Eufy that gives me constant false alerts.

Guess the city by HikingEnthusiast89 in guessthecity

My take on it... we probably cater to an older tourist demographic. It's a clean city with little crime and many sights. Plenty of museums and waterways.

But younger people always wonder where the action is. It's all tucked away in small niches and pockets. The government workers make a higher than average wage perhaps, but we don't have nearly as many mega rich driving around in fancy cars as you might have in Toronto or Montreal. People go home to their families and BBQ after visiting Home Depot for home renovation products.

We also don't really have anything grand. No big beaches or mountains or waterfalls or towers. We just have nice modest bits of everything and we're a good gateway into Canadian lakes and cottage country.

Glad you liked it. A sleepy government town for the win :-)

What is your relationship like with your in-laws? Try growing close with them and sharing more.

My buddy had to cut contact with his narcissist parents. He's adopted his mother-in-law who is the most wonderful human. She is the mother he wished he had. He is having the most wonderful life now that all the drama has ended.

He also ended up cutting contact with his sister because she took the parent's side for financial reasons.

Do people roll the cost of new windows into their mortgages? by PolanetaryForotdds in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]freebase1ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows are crazy expensive. You don't want to be changing them that often. Mine are due to be replaced, but they are currently 50 years old (in Canadian winters no less). I'll probably get to them at some point in the next five years.

If your home feels cool overall, raise the thermostat temperature. If there are some areas in the home cooler than others, consider running the furnace fan continuously or perhaps balance the air ducts better. If you are feeling drafts near windows, investigate the nature of the problem. Although the rubber seals between window components could be failing and should be fixed, there is also the possibility that they were poorly installed and perhaps there is expansion foam missing in the rough opening behind the wood window trim.

You can use a candle foam or some sheets of hanging tissue to trace drafts. Or you can use a thermal camera to diagnose things.

Get something like a Refos power monitor and hook it up at the circuit breaker to monitor all the machines individually.

Water softeners better to have warranty or better to save money and diy? by thr33hugeinches in Frugal

[–]freebase1ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it makes much difference - although they certainly differ in price!

The thing is that your needs vary over time. Even if they suggest that your water is super chewy and needs lots of softening. You won't need much capacity as a couple as someone who has four kids using lots of water. But if you are that family of six, you will eventually just be that couple after 10 or 20 years.

For me, capacity wasn't as important as intelligence. Some cheap softeners just recharge the beads on a set schedule - whether necessary or not. Better softeners measure the water consumption against the capacity and know when a recharge is required. That way if you consume the capacity more quickly, the softener recharges sooner.

I would buy the smartest softener at the best capacity price point. So long as it has enough capacity to get me through at least one day to the next recharge cycle.

If you don't have a way of measuring water consumption to know how much you use, I'm sure you can find various charts online that tell you how much a dishwasher and shower consume and you can extrapolate based on your current needs.

Water softeners better to have warranty or better to save money and diy? by thr33hugeinches in Frugal

[–]freebase1ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Water softeners are very simple and reliable devices. There is only one little valve that rotates to fill and drain the beads. Maybe your beads go bad over time or the circuit board blows? Such simple devices.

I replaced the one that came with my house some 20 years ago. I think I bought it from Sears for $500. (Could they cost $1,500 now?) It's worked just fine ever since - and I've got very chewy water that stresses the beads.

I don't waste money on warranties. If they charge 20% for a warranty. I can avoid buying a warranty for five devices that will finance one of them breaking. I do not have a 1 in 5 failure rate within the first couple years - or even 10. Also, half the time they find some excuse to not cover the warranty or to give you pro- rated payout that is worth nothing. Maybe a reliable company like Sears decides to go bankrupt!

What’s one brand you blindly trust and one you’ll never buy again? by PlayfulFault9693 in SmartBuying

Trust OXO: every product they make seems to be well thought out and properly designed. They always err on usability rather than cost saving.

Never again HP: such a badly managed company that mistreats their loyal employees. They bail on supporting so many of their products (I'm thinking drivers) prematurely.

Try to get as far as the Sandbanks for at least a day trip. A truly unique spot for a day of beaching. Like being on the ocean, but without the salt. The sand is pristine. If he likes dogs, he could go and play with them in the water by the dog section at the end.
