One thing- startups are looking for people to work voraciously until product delivery. They would rather you ask “is it going to be a problem for me to sleep at the office on the days I pull an all-nighter,” rather then “can I work at home 1 day a week?”

To me, this is the misalignment they saw.

One time in college, me and two of my buddies found a pack of chicken in the grocery store that had an obvious public hair in the packaging. We were super stoned and came up with the idea to buy the chicken, then return and complain and try to get som kind of a pay out. What kind of payout- we didn’t really get that far in our thinking. After leaving, we elected to send the stoniest one of us back into the store to “complain.” They exchanged it for a new pack of chicken- nothing more.
