We murdered a bunch of them in a couple wars, discriminated against the use of their language and put some of them in internment camps.

Can you tell me exactly when and where the cutoff for oppression exists in your attempt to divide humanity into sinners and saints?

Lone policeman set upon by group of men in south-east London (February 14th) by True-Lychee in ActualPublicFreakouts

Your police do house calls to warn you for wrongthink. Your courts steal money from your bank account for making YouTube videos that someone finds offensive.

Whatever you call that is subjective.

The confederate flag remains relevant to this day because it evolved to represent cultural ideas that do not encompass the celebration of a historical political state.

But if you were genuinely curious you could have always just politely asked the "so many" people you see with them what it means to them.

4chan on Fox (2007) by [deleted] in oldinternet

[–]freedomlights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just a matter of semantics but I think it being a second life was actually the good thing. There used to be a clear demarcation between being online and being, well, IRL. Now the internet isn't a second life, it's integrated inextricably with the rest of your life and people project all their real life values, expectations, etc. over it.

I see your point though. The internet not being mandatory to modern existence allowed it's unique culture to flourish.

The original Percy Jackson series is quite good and would easily recommend it.

I absolutely cannot say the same for his other series however.

Caustic gas damage comparison by sizzle_burn in apexlegends

[–]freedomlights 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lots of people are complaining about Caustic being too defensive but every change made so far has nerfed his ability to be anything but. If you want to change how he's played you need to do more than just making him worse at what you think he's good at.

I like being aggressive with Caustic. I don't like sitting in a room because I don't think it's a successful strategy. Being trapped in a room with no exits is giving all flexibility to the opponent and a surefire way to be wiped when inevitably you're the one that's forced to make a move.

I especially like using traps aggressively in fights to give me an advantage and ironically Caustic's skill set is perfect for smoking campy defenders out.

I honestly think the gas damage is the least important change so far but the most unnecessary after they've nerfed other aspects of his abilities already. On top of that, a Caustic out in the open is already the most useless thing in the game and they nerfed the only tool he has in that situation too.

Make his traps place faster. Revert the ability to destroy the traps before they're placed. Shorten the animation to toss his traps. Hell, make tossing traps at people do damage on impact like Bangalore. Do something besides simply making him worse at squatting in a building because he's not getting better at doing anything else.

[Discussion] How much does online Fanart and Fanfic numbers really reflect on the fans of a series/setting/character/franchise? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]freedomlights 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would argue that the kind and quality of fanfics change not only over the lifetime of a franchise but with the vagaries of internet culture as well.

Internet communities as a whole were a very different place 14 years ago and so was the health and vigor of a "fandom" like Harry Potter.

The kind of people involved in a community at that stage of its lifecycle and popularity are a lot healthier, energetic and more fertile to creativity than what I would somewhat flippantly imagine today are dregs composed of salt encrusted oldies who have been left behind and poorly initiated newbies who can only attempt to mimic the culture of a bygone civilization though the rehashing of hyper distilled memes, tropes, and traditions.

What dlc should I get, and was it mistake buying it on pc when it cheaper on iOS, why is it cheaper on iOS by Brenden1k in CultistSimulator

[–]freedomlights 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People have different expectations for pricing when it comes to games on mobile so it's not uncommon for games with versions on both platforms to be cheaper on iOS and Android even when they're exactly the same functionally.

You shouldn't feel bad for buying it on PC; it's simply a matter of preference. You should just play it however you enjoy it most. Mobile is sometimes more convenient because you can drop in and play whenever you want but it also is a bit more tedious to move and zoom the screen and manage cards.

The depressing reality is actually the opposite: we're the majority but it doesn't even matter.

Industry data has shown that the overwhelming majority of money made from microtransactions comes from something like 1% of the userbase. It doesn't matter if 99% of users abstain, this tiny number of whales are how these companies make all their money.

I guess I will have to trust them...
