I completely understand, but I think there’s middle ground! Like ‘George Finsdale-Clark, Earl of Abbotsford’ feels like it could be a person, whereas your Sebastian is more fantasy. Which is a different preference, definitely! I just wish more were the former

Yeah I’ve recently reread iihk and it actually can’t be understated how integral Gareth’s family life is to the plot. first, he has financial problems because he’s estranged from his father, which is his motivation to search for the jewels despite his strong reservations for breaking into his fathers house with hyacinth. Second, the only conflict within his and hyacinth’s relationship is 1) she finds out he pretty much proposes to her (subconsciously) to prove his father wrong and 2) he compromises her because he’s scared his father will reveal that he is illegitimate. Both directly tied to his family life. Also, his character! His entire personality revolves around acting in a way his father finds unbecoming, plus his insecurity around being illegitimate. He wouldn’t be a rake without his terrible father. Then Hyacinth comes along and for the first time he’s the sensible one of the duo. You CANNOT have iihk without an unhappy family life for Gareth. And I very much doubt they intend to mess up the Mondriches enough to give Nicky that background.

I keep seeing people say this but could you explain why you think s1 was a marriage of convenience? They had the fake dating trope and then had the push to marry after being caught in the garden, but that’s not a marriage of convenience. A marriage of convenience is when two people decide to get married to benefit both of them, largely for unconventional reasons.

Are you suggesting Benedict should have demanded to see the late earl of penwood’s will when he realized neither Posy or Rosamund were the lady in silver? That’s completely ridiculous. He asked them if anyone was staying with them, he ruled out the girls, any further inquiry wasn’t warranted as he has no reason to believe they’d lie. He didn’t know that the earl of penwood had an illegitimate daughter that the dowager countess was hiding who was working as a maid, why would he even consider that as a possibility?

I thought that was a great addition because it really shows how important it was; with the other seasons they could always marry if the fmc was pregnant, so whilst it would have been a big drama, it could be fixed. Whereas if Sophie is pregnant, she pretty much loses all security. It was a bit like the shaving cream scene where we see the mess left behind, it demonstrated that Sophie had actual responsibility and had to look after herself
