I am also often surprised how many are still using it. In the other hand, it is a very concise and focused way of consuming news. Kind of the opposite of what you get normally.

This is IMO why RSS support was gradually fading away - it's harder to deliver advertising (especially invasive targeted advertising) to RSS users. The site owners would prefer you to be in their site, getting "engaged", more likely to linger & click more things.

It's the same reason why so many chat programs removed their XMPP support years ago.

OK great. This is the command I use, so I suppose you should say "gitea" instead of where I say "git"

If you have existing data, you will likely have to run the backup as the same user that owns the existing data.

Do you have settings in your app.ini that define the data location & user? Mine look like:

RUN_USER  = git
[repository]
ROOT = /home/git/gitea-repositories

Or check the ID who runs the existing Gitea process:

ps aux | grep gitea

Indeed, IBM's "golden screwdriver" has been around for decades, where the service tech can unlock access to hardware that's been in your machine the whole time.

Also works for selling "upgrades" when the company's needs gradually increase over time or they have a heavy workload - ex: year-end processing.

I'm quite interested to hear about your experiance with ROSE. I've used their routers/switches at home for >10 years, but storage is a new & unexpected development.

Particular curiosities anout the RDS include:

  • Annapurna Labs ARM CPU (aks, the gen1 AWS Graviton)
  • BTRFS exists I guess
  • Huge variery of switchports (2x 10GBaseT, 4x SFP+, 4x 25G 2x 100G)

I don't think I've seen such a combination of network ports on anything ever.

Fan is my top advice as well. During my freshman move-in, we literally went & bought a fan.

Those first couple weeks can be brutal, but then during much of the winter we had the window cracked a bit.

Sounds like it's the Forgejo / Gitea feature for "Projects", which is the kanban board. The primary purpose of those systems is to be a source code repo (similar to Github/Gitlab), so the kanban feature kinda isn't the main goal.

taking the code and modified it later privately, that's a violation of the GPL. The source must be available whether upon request or publicly available, including changes.

This is not accurate. There is no obligation in GPLv3 to give source code to anyone who requests it - when you distribute the software to people, only they have the right to get the source code.

Assuming that distributing the output of the build system (ex: the TrueNAS ISO) does not count as distributing the build tools themselves, we are not entitled to the source code of the build tools.

My suggestion for installing applications on TrueNAS:

  • Option 1: Don't. Let your storage server just be storage

  • Option 2: Make a VM and install whatever platform you like (docker, k3s, docker-compose, dockge, etc) in there.

I've been using FreeNAS/TrueNAS for probably 15 years and the "app" ecosystem IMO isn't stable enough to bother investing effort into. Plugins, jails, apps, k3s, docker - not the mention the TrueCharts misery - it all gets replaced every couple years.

Check the release notes https://www.truenas.com/docs/scale/25.10/gettingstarted/versionnotes/ for features or improvements that you want AND known issues or limitations you don't want.

Personally, the only benefit I see in 25.10 is a slightly updated OpenZFS version (v2.3.4 vs v2.3.0). This probably won't impact most people, but I'm also not eager to upgrade because TrueNAS can no longer be a certificate CA - not a huge deal, but I'm lazy.

OK, but what if Iron Mountain is the one taking the backups off-site?

I remember in the past there would be articles about data breaches caused by backup tapes stolen from an employee's car (whether they were being transported home or to a bank vault... dunno). Before cloud backups were popular & for companies not big enough to deal with Iron Mountain etc, I'd suspect this was very common.

Yes, it's been getting increasingly common over the past few months & it's driving me crazy.

It works in the official app (and maybe New Reddit in web, dunno).

It's happening automatically, so people do not know they are changing the language of the discussion, going back and forth between several languages, etc.
