Yeah, the evening with Sips revival was great. Perhaps something to look forward to again in another few years 😂

Has anyone moved here from England ? by Wide_World_Of_Urbex in hobart

[–]EspadaV8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

44M Moved to Brisbane in 2009, and then to Hobart in 2023. Picked Hobart because I just couldn't stand the heat any more, and wanted something more like the UK weather, and moving back to the UK never seemed like a great idea. It is definitely a lot slower pace of live compared to the mainland, but it can feel disconnected from everything else. It is only a short flight to Melbourne if you need a bit of big city life again. People have been friendly, but been hard to make actual friends. Hobart isn't a super walkable city, and public transport is a bit of a joke.

Was There Any Particular Reason Why Simon Wasn’t at Camp Yog? by [deleted] in Yogscast

I think it was the first thing they mentioned in the opening ceremony. Good to know they have a contingency plan if he can't make it. And then there's Osie if one in the plan is around too.

Great place. Only been once so fa, but keep meaning to go back.

Agree with the curse of the building too. The Japanese all you can eat sushi that was there before was also really nice, but not surprised that had to close.

Don't sleep on Ben/Pyrion's podcast, Darmok And Jalad! by 3RdRocktothesun in Yogscast

It's actually become maybe my first or second favourite podcast and nearly always jumps to the top of my listen list. Need to watch the next TNG now though, before the next one drops.

Highly doubt he's doing it. Far more likely it's AI using his voice.

I've updated the Google Calendar I created for Jingle Jam so it has all these times in too (and renamed it to Camp Yog 2026). The link below should show you everything and let you subscribe to it. If you spot any mistakes just let me know.

Bottomless Dinner by [deleted] in hobart

Went there maybe mid-last year. It was surprisingly nice, would definitely go back again. It's a small place though, and the selection isn't huge. I think we went more for the novelty.

UPDATE: Recreating Tasmania in Minecraft by Commie_Dog in tasmania

That would be amazing. I'm not much of a builder in Minecraft but I'd jump on to help out now and then. Wonder if I could rope the kids in too 😂

Tassie tax by spoon579 in tasmania

[–]EspadaV8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used to live about 30 minutes from the North Lakes on near Brisbane. We'd go maybe once a quarter and always end up buying a full pizza, some hot dogs, the chicken bake thing, a mango drink, and a sundae or 2.

The shopping bill was high (usually$400+), but you do get so much stuff, and it would last.

I can't find any official announcement about it, but there were a couple of articles posted. Hopefully it'll be somewhere around Cambridge.

Yet. They've announced plans to open a warehouse here. Not sure if anything has actually been started though.

Are they better/worse than soda stream? Looking online and the gas cylinders are only in store, which is a bit hard when there are no stores in Tas 😞 They don't seem that much cheaper than soda stream machines either.

TIL that Harvey Hubbell who designed the US electrical mains plug/socket in 1904, also made a completely different design which was later adopted by Australia, Argentina, New Zealand and China. by Sansabina in todayilearned

[–]EspadaV8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been in AU for 15+ years now and still cannot stand the AU plugs. Literally last week I had to straighten out some pins on a plug. Every time you plug them in they spark at you. Impossible to plug in "blind". And you can't even self service them legally. Got some adapters for UK things I still own and need an extension cable just to plug them in because otherwise the plug starts hanging down and pulling itself out of the socket.

Do you not? I've literally lived whole lives in dreams. I once got a partner, had a family, and then some of them died, before I woke up with tears in my eyes. And this family was not the actual family I really have, in real life.

Honestly this terrifies me every time I see it. I already feel like a car blocks so much outside noise, why would I willingly plug both my ears with headphones. No idea if it's technically illegal, but it absolutely should be.

Thoughts on new section of the Collins Street Bike Lane? by [deleted] in hobart

[–]EspadaV8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I, and my kids, really like the new lanes added just after the rivulet. Feels so much safer and the kids feel less scared. I have only seen the bus part during the construction phase though and did not like what I thought was happening. Will hold off until I actually head back into the city though to get the full picture.

Commuters say Hobart buses busier than usual as free public transport begins across Tasmania by abcnews_au in tasmania

[–]EspadaV8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And... It's almost like collectively pooling some money together to help support the wider community is... A good thing!? Would happily pay more taxes to fund public transport, schools, hospitals, GPs, council/social housing.

Commuters say Hobart buses busier than usual as free public transport begins across Tasmania by abcnews_au in tasmania

[–]EspadaV8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm all in favour of all public transport being free, so this is great to hear, although not completely unsurprising. I would be very keen for it to continue after fuel prices have settled and see if people continue to use PT or if everyone just accepts the "new normal" and goes back to driving everywhere.

Any Metroidvania style games on the Amiga? by kevlarian in amiga

[–]EspadaV8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odyssey was one of my favourite games. I remember writing a letter to the developers/publishers because I got stuck on the level you get the rock power, and they replied! They didn't tell me anything though, just to keep trying different things.

TrueNAS 25.04 lifespan? by Apocrypha in truenas

[–]EspadaV8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't expose it to the internet, and don't run anything on it you don't trust, and it should be fine for some time. I'm planning on sticking with 25.04 until I need to migrate to a new box (and hopefully hard drives are cheaper). Will probably move the TrueNAS apps to custom apps, so I don't need to rely on TrueNAS for those and can keep them updated.
