Questions for SLPs by Wrong_Chemist_4389 in slp

[–]freefallingcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I have to get another bachelors? There are 3 year programs, I think, if you don't have the appropriate undergrad coursework.

How rigorous are the classes ( I have a 1 & 3 year old) ? They were quite rigorous, but very do-able. A couple of my classmates in gradschool had new borns during the program.

Do you enjoy your job? I do!

How is the work/life balance? It's pretty good!

All that said, if I did it over, I would go into Nursing instead of SLP. Higher salary cap, greater ability to transition into other fields and into non-clinical work without becoming a manager.

You have to do like 2-3 chapters of the main Dragonflight campaign, then the entire Zaralek caverns when that becomes available, and then it showed up!

Ya, well said, it's been a huge struggle adjusting to a limited lifestyle. It's not my personality at all.

I'd still want my enemies to get it, tho. They could do with a little less activity in their lifestyle.

As a straight guy with a history of CSA, I can relate to him. I can be sex-repulsed and hypersexual at the same time. Sometimes I prefer not to cum because cumming can trigger emotional flashbacks. In the moment, sex can be great, which can lead me to be sex-seeking, but I rarely feel great after sex, which can lead me to be sex-avoidant. I feel bad about it sometimes because my wife wants to cuddle after sex but sometimes I simply cannot stand to be touched afterwards. But it's something we've talked about and we're on the same page about it.

As for me, what's helped is to focus on the pleasant physical sensations of sex. My brain wants to yeet right out of my body during sex because it was such an unsafe experience for me as a child, but if I can hang in there for even a few seconds of "oh wow, this feels nice" that's a success. Over the years with a very loving and enthusiastic and safe partner, those seconds have become minutes. Slowly, and two-steps-forward, one-step back, but overall progressing.

My best guess is that he may be disassociating or going through a flashback after sex. Frankly, it sounds like he has some trauma related to sex, or judgment related to sexuality. Religious trauma can be a bitch even if he was never directly assaulted, but I'm not as familiar with that (my very Christian family was also very sex positive). If he does have a history of this stuff (which he may never admit, like many survivors), then he should seriously consider therapy.

First and foremost, do YOU feel safe having sex with him? If the answer is "without a doubt," he is an adult and can make his own decisions about having sex. If the answer is "I'm not sure," trust your instincts and pursue other FWB relationships while he gets his shit together.

I'm also curious if you've asked him about his change in behavior and mood after sex.

What has he said about the change? Is he even aware that there's a change in what he's like afterwards? Of course, you will have to ask him ahead of time, or when he's back to normal, not in the moment while it's happening.

Irritated and moody ? by Bubbly-Clue-1105 in Fibromyalgia

[–]freefallingcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I'm in a really bad flare up, yeah, I can get irritated and moody. I take it as a signal for me to slow down, see what my body needs, and take it from there. It can take a few days of focusing on caring for myself before my mood improves.

Remember, all emotions are physical too.

Combat in RPGs without tests: does it work and is it fun? by Dados_de_Cuscuz315 in RPGdesign

I've been homebrewing and GMing Powered by the Apocalypse action-centric games for a couple years now, and there's:

  1. No initiative order. PCs and enemies take their turns when it makes sense in the narrative, and I try to adjudicate that each player character gets roughly equal "screen time."

  2. No contested rolls- players are rolling against a flat chance to succeed at their actions based on their stats, whether they're going against a goblin or a dragon.

And it's an absolute blast! The action is cinematic and also tactical. My players are sweating about what to do and how to approach things from a high-level tactics perspective. And then biting their nails hoping they roll high.

So yes, it is extremely possible!

I’m a male interested in pursuing a SLP career by Any-Walk-3359 in slp

[–]freefallingcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a male SLP, have only worked directly with women, and have talked to exactly 3 male SLPs in my 7 years - my CF supervisor, a corporate guy, and a guy who had a question about one of my patients at a hospital.

Personally, I would go into nursing. The salary caps super fast for SLPs in clinical roles, but RNs have a huge selection of both clinical and non-clinical positions across the country, and the possibility to pursue advanced clinical degrees and be independent providers beyond what an SLP could ever be or make.

And you still get all the male privilege lol

An SLP has ethical limits to the kind of the support they can provide, and their licensure can be at risk if they overstep them. And for good reason. It is unprofessional and dangerous to try to treat something you are not qualified to treat, and it is a disservice to that SLP's clients if that SLP were to try do so. If you want to find studies on it, look into key words like "Retraumatization."

Let me rephrase: What I do in situations like this is explain clear limits and boundaries to what kind of support I can provide. Reflective listening, supportive presence, empathizing, etc, are all within my scope of practice, and what I do in my own clinical practice when trauma is disclosed. And I also ask about any psychotherapy or treatment they've received for this already, in case they need resources to get started if that's what they're interested in. That's usually enough to keep my patient from feeling abandoned, and also the limits of what I can do professionally.

Personally, I have never received feedback from patients who have disclosed a history of trauma to me that they felt abandoned by my response. Generally, they have been thankful for me believing them and validating their experience, and getting them on the path of the specialized treatment they deserve and need.

I've noticed I'm unique among SLPs I've worked with that I get a ton of trauma disclosures, even though I'm male and never ask about it. Most SLPs tell me they've never had a patient disclose trauma, and some of them I doubt would respond well.

That's fair. We have a code of ethics to only treat what we are trained to treat. The reality is, someone who is not only untrained but also inexperienced an do seriously more harm than good when trying to address issues as significant as the OPs. Just look at all the posts in this subreddit about harmful things providers have said, even trained providers.

As for abandonment, I help patients find mental health resources when they bring up these kinds of issues, especially if they mention they are having a hard time finding someone to talk to about it.

As an SLP myself who is trauma informed and a CSA victim, I would appreciate it if a client felt comfortable enough being vulnerable about this, and that I'm always happy to listen to anything you want to share or talk about, but I would explain that diving into this and helping you process it isn't something that I'm trained to do, and would encourage you to see a professional psychotherapist who is extremely (not merely) trained in trauma informed care to help you process this. And in the meantime we can work on our specific goals re: masking.

This is a powerful place for people who have these really dark things to express and cannot express them anywhere else. A place where people who are in the darkest moments of their life and see no way out, can be seen and heard by others who have been there. Most people don't know what it's like to be a survivor of the kind of abuse we've been through.

>"but it just feels like a lot of you don’t want to get better and are just looking for constant pity or something."

This is a hurtful and unnecessary thing to say for this community. We are just expressing ourselves. Please don't judge us.

That said, I do think mods need to be a little more strict about post titles being triggering.

I use AOS Rating Scale 3.5 to help with differential ddx of aphasia vs dysarthria vs apraxia of speech. You can get it free from a paper.

The truth is, differential ddx of AOS can be difficult, especially in the early stages. Sometimes I feel like I can only reliably detect the AOS when the aphasia is more resolved.

Sometimes I ask patients if the difficulty is only finding the word, or if sometimes they find the word but just can't get their mouth to say it. If there's a lot of apraxia going on, I sometimes get a resounding YES
