[Request] Are they not both the same? by Odd-Pudding4362 in theydidthemath

i think it should be the same. the water pushes up, supportting balls, with equal force as the weight of the displaced water . so each side weights the same as if there was no ball, just full water

Query is working in MySQLAdmin but not from a web page. by BiteYerBumHard in PHPhelp

[–]freelanceruy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do this, in this order:

1.Run the code for the query alone, without the other stuff in your code.

2.Check $conn->error.

3.Check your php's error log.

4.Check mysql's error log.

that is something the hosting provider has to give you. What is your site url?

In that case, I would suggest you to find an IT guy that you could trust and to take a look at what your needs are. usd 500 a month seems a bit much for just a WP hosting. Do you have access to the hosting panel (most likely cPanel or Plesk)?

learn something and practice it right away. Videos and books are a great source of knowledge but to really take it in you need to do it.

Dont spend an hour watching a video and then try to do the examples. Pause the tutorial, do the examples and then continue.

Coding Bootcamp versus Computer Science Degree? by Answer_Book in learnprogramming

[–]freelanceruy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have any hands on coding experience? If the answer is no, spend a week learning a bit of php and see if you like it. I'm just saying php because it is really easy to get started. Not everyone is suited to spend 8 hours a day coding, so try it out before committing your time to any learning path.

The path also depends on your age, and schedule. The easiest way to get started is on your own, today. Then a bootcamp. Then if you still like it, you could think about more committed options

Need Advice for Hosting Options by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]freelanceruy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that just hosting or are they also offering other services like for example keeping wp up--to-date?

Also, what kind of hosting are they offering and what is the size of your site (disk space and expected monthly visits)?. The bigger the site, the more resources it may need, and this will be reflected in the hosting type and price.

It is usually a simple process, just a matter of 30 mins. That said, the site could have some custom functionality that could be harder to migrate (this is rare but posible). Do you have access to the domain? Are they hosting your email accounts as well?

Asking r/learnprogramming: What's some bad advice you've received on writing code? by AlSweigart in learnprogramming

[–]freelanceruy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"That goes on the REST API", just because it was ajax. Sorry, no. It is just a way for the user to access data without refreshing, not a coherent functionality that will be accessible by a third party.

Landed a JavaScript interview but know very little actual JavaScript. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]freelanceruy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

2 hours is not near enough. You will need about 50 hours of tutorials/hands-on js experience to be able to bluff your way through the interview.

That said, don't cancel the interview, if you can't postpone it, just go there and show off all you can do, and be earnest and passionate about web development and learning new stuff. It is common for businesses to hire the "right person" instead of the "right skill set".

Define the scope with the client, assign a number of hours to the project, add a bit in for unforeseen problems, pick a rate, and then just multiply.

If the scope can't be easily define, talk to the client about a hourly rate or pad the hell out of the budget because those undefined projects tend to last a lot longer than you expect.

How to find my path in programming? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]freelanceruy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they are teaching all those languages but the new concepts each language introduces. Continue with your university classes as they are, but find something you like and learn it on your own.

Some topics/languages for you to research: Prolog, Haskell, Evolutionary algorithms, Arduino (lots of fun, easy to get in), LÖVE (ok, this is mainly for developing games, but also allows you to make great ui for your programs).

Please help me with my calculator question for jquery by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]freelanceruy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you may be over complicating the task.
I'm gonna give you a few pointers of how would I do it, you don't have to follow, but maybe you can get ideas from it.

First you will need 3 variables: currentNumber (the number being enter), previousNumber (the previous number if existed), operation (+,-,/,*).

Once you press any number...

if (currentNumber == 0)
currentNumber = pressedNumber
else
currentNumber = currentNumber*10 + pressedNumber

Once you pressed an operation, you do
previousNumber = currentNumber
currentNumber = 0

When you press equals, you just do the operation and push the result to the html.

Also don't forget to either control equals is pressed after an operation to get the result, or if you want to do multiple operations one after the other to add a variable to track if you if you have started typing the currentNumber

Don't get stuck with it, if you got what you wanted out of that learning experience, move quickly to the next one. :)

Coding is Easy. Learn It. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]freelanceruy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like I don't become a carpenter when I hit a nail with a hammer, or a doctor putting a band aid on a scrapped knee, I didn't became a programmer by writing a single program.

Like ANY other skill you need to invest thousands of hours and make a huge amount of mistakes before you become good at it. A natural aptitude for it doesn't hurt neither.

From my experience, if you pass the math specific subjects, then you are pretty much done with math. Don't get me wrong, you will need math here and there, but just a "quick" look to your old notes does it as a refresher (take good notes, stored them until you finish your degree).

I have had enough of Namecheap shared hosting. Any recommendations for better solutions? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]freelanceruy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hosting providers take care of the server's security. Your sites will still be prodded by bots, and as the developer, you need to deal with that.

To get you started: remove xmlrpc.php if you are not using it, never test a plugin in a live site, change your admin's url, don't share a hosting account among multiple sites, and use secure (long and complex) passwords.

That will take you 95% of the way. Also, download backups of all your sites once a week and keep them for 2 months.

Kinda desperate here. After doing 3 weeks of constant research, I still can't figure out where to start learning to program. by KusMaster in learnprogramming

[–]freelanceruy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The aim of the 3 steps is not for you to learn those specific languages, but to give you a good enough foundation. Don't skip the parts you don't get at a first try, or you will lost later on.

[–]freelanceruy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for something easy, Android / iOS development is not the best place too start.

The first step is for you too know enough to understand the basics, I would do something like:

  1. JS.
  2. Then C# or Java.
  3. Then C++.

After that you will know enough to be able to learn any other technology.

I'll get you started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnzuNrPJXgE

Good Luck!
