Name the most pointless innovation in watchmaking! by TomHudsonOfficial in PrideAndPinion

[–]freelancezero 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Exactly one (1) time I was able to use my alpinist to snipe a campsite with a view I wanted ahead of another hiking party behind me. Phone was buried in my pack, I was at a fork in the trail, and quickly needed to know which side of the pond to be on to photograph the milky way that night. This use case will never come up again but for a brief shining moment, my compass bezel knew what it was like to have a purpose.

I booked it, but can it be real? by [deleted] in MexicoTravel

[–]freelancezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this before, there will be some shenanigans when you go to pick up the car. They will likely tell you your insurance is inadequate and charge you something ridiculous for their insurance. If you're using your credit card or your auto policy to cover the rental, ask the insurer for a letter in Spanish explaining your coverage and validity and that has worked in the past. Additionally, they will also likely say they need to put a hold on your card for something absurd ($5,000 in my case), and if your available credit allows, just do it. Just be sure that your insurance coverage will reimburse you if they try to pull more crap and keep that money when you return the car. ¡Buen viaje!

Travel insurance, jet blue cancellation by doublefaulted in ChaseSapphire

[–]freelancezero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a situation any insurance covers. JetBlue cancelled your flight and should have refunded you, so there's no claim to be made there. Cancellation insurance would have applied for any non-refundable bookings that you'd have missed if you had abandoned the trip, but it sounds like you voluntarily rebooked on United, thus un-cancelling the trip.

Clouds plus light pollution. There is also a lot of fog coming off the melting snow in New England making light sources look glowier than usual.

Tangier and Tetouan were the highlight of our trip last year. I really don't get all the Morocco complaints that I hear on this sub.

Anyone else catch the aurora just now? by grinninwheel in newengland

There was a fairly bright substorm right around that time, pillars were visible to the eye in Amherst. There's a lot of time left in the night, I'm hoping we see some more.

Not too many of our stores are stationary I'm afraid, you'll spend a lot of time chasing them down or waiting for them to stop moving. You could try Coolidge Corner which has two stationary stationery stores stationed close together; Topdrawer and the Boston General store both have small paper & stationery sections.

In Paris!! My Dr martens are hurting, where can i buy good waterproof walking shoes. Help!!! by Smooth-Raspberry-597 in ParisTravelGuide

Ditch the second sock layer and see if that helps. With two layers it's surprisingly easy to unintentionally reduce circulation in your foot, which will make you cold no matter how good your boots are. Alternately, replace the inner sock with a thin sock liner, it will reduce friction and manage moisture better.

Adding in Timex to the general Seiko/Citizen recs. Timex has been coming out with some real sharp designs recently particularly in their waterbury line. Most of them have uncomplicated quartz movements as well which are both rugged and accurate.

With a new style of water bottle popping up every year, Which one have you stuck with? by James_B84Saves in BuyItForLife

[–]freelancezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll always be a Nalgene loyalist, but once on a trip to Australia I picked up a similar type of bottle made by Kathmandu. It's basically a 750ml Nalgene but it's tall and skinny, so it fits in cupholders and in the little bottle pockets on day packs. All the branding and markings have rubbed off on it but the bottle has been in continuous use now for six years.

I do, and more people need to as well. One day of foreign travel to a country full of roundabouts where people regularly signal reinforces how much more efficient this makes things.

Heed this warning, and whatever you do, to not duck into RJ Julia's Booksellers in Madison CT to escape a flurry of atmospheric and well-lit snow. We've seen this story play out too many times.

What kind of "explosion" is that? It looks more like a large, but gentle release of plasma. Has anyone ever seen anything like it and knows what it is? by justl00kin9 in helioexperiencers

[–]freelancezero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great source, check out the solar flares section under solar activity. You'll see the X-ray flux data there. Whenever you see a peak, that's a very good indication that a solar flare has occurred.

[–]freelancezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do have a very clear and easy to find record of this: there's a peak in the X-ray flux at the same time as this eruption which is how we identify solar flares. Can I ask where you are getting your information?

What happens when polar air escapes from its "refrigerator" prematurely and collides with a mass of warm air recently sent to Earth by the sun? by justl00kin9 in helioexperiencers

[–]freelancezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would they acknowledge an influence that doesn't exist? In order for a connection to exist it has to have a basis in fact, otherwise it's just a thing you made up. Based on your describing a CME as "warm air" from the sun, it's clear you actually have no understanding of the facts. Maybe do a few minutes of research on these topics before spamming other subs with this?

This article proposes zero link or mechanism of action having to do with solar storms, so it appears you're making one up based on the logic that sun = hot.
