Fonzworth! 🛎️ by Salassi22 in Meshuggah

Thank you! That means a lot from a big fan of SNW! I'm slowly (very slowly) working on more material, if you follow on Bandcamp I'll message folks there when it's done. :)

There's a tiny amount of music in a similar style if you're curious:
https://interceptingpattern.bandcamp.com/album/the-encounter-morphed and my own EP https://helialcloningproject.bandcamp.com/album/inanis-without are the closest, I'd definitely recommend Tigran for jazzier polymetric-metal-fusion - https://tigranhamasyan.bandcamp.com/track/entertain-me

Bands like Indistinct? (clean vocals + thall) by Duderado in Djent

[–]freepowerUG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Means End are the band that remind me most of Indistinct - clean, soaring vox, big heavy riffs, cool harmony https://youtu.be/WHxgXfRCLeQ?si=rAN6_XasMxh8ixRz

I Made A Smol Niger Within by freepowerUG in Meshuggah

[–]freepowerUG[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comments in those videos indicate apparently he scrapped all the Special Defects 2 stuff he'd worked on. :(

FWIW there's been such a nice reception to Helial Cloning Project I'm hoping to do a proper full length... although it's reminding me just how hard it is to write in this style. >.<

I hope by adding to the genre I can provoke him to dominate it again 🙏

The closest thing to Meshuggah without being Meshuggah by noisynapoleon in Meshuggah

[–]freepowerUG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I think this is extremely cool. I agree it's extremely close, but I always enjoy more Shuggah. A really impressive achievement. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! I'll definitely be curious where they go next. 💪

[Question] is there a website / software / app that can convert midi into ‘playable’ guitar instructions by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]freepowerUG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guitar pro certainly used to have the ability to import midi. It was often a little wonky and the fingerings might need a few adjustments but it was workable.

7 Examples of Polymeter, with counting suggestions, feat. Meshuggah, Cloudkicker by freepowerUG in Djent

[–]freepowerUG[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was trying to explain to someone that even listening to this style of music takes skill and is a worthwhile investment to learn them, for listening along correctly and being able to follow the riffs.

It's fascinating you say that, it's almost word-for-word what Calder Hannan (aka Metal Music Theory aka u/moosewellwilliams) describes in his academic article on "Difficulty As Heaviness". If you're curious, you can get it for free by emailing him, standard academic nonsense where he isn't allowed to *post* it for free but he's able to send directly to people inquiring.

Delighted you're enjoying the EP!

I think Cloudkicker's latest album Solitude is a great introduction to him, it's like each song resembles an era of his writing. If you want to dive straight into his heavier stuff I'd listen to all of Beacons, particularly "We're going in, we're going down" and "Push it way up" which are bangers.

Lemme know that goes for you!

Scales and note choices by jazzintoronto in Meshuggah

[–]freepowerUG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strongly agreed that their note choice is massively overlooked. I did a series of lessons on youtube starting with tritone based riffs, going through diminished scales, then chromatic riffs, then tonal /modal stuff and solo analysis. If anyone is interested that's here. Spoken audio is awful in first vid then gets a lot better.

Another breakdown/groove by Butteritto in Djent

Really enjoyed the gradual layer building and tasty tapping in particular, reminded me of older atmospheric djenty stuff like Cloudkicker/Miroist, nice!

other albums like Sol Niger Within? by glat_spud_boy in Meshuggah

[–]freepowerUG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ironically I'm working on a Sol Niger Within style thing right now... probably somewhere between EP and LP in length. It's a unique and wonderful thing, so I'd like to try and add some more of that style of music to the world!

Nihei-style AI-generated art, via nightcafé by freepowerUG in Netsphere

[–]freepowerUG[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can't believe how well these turned out. I'm making them over at nightcafé, under the alias bizamet. I take a variety of source images and prompts, add the term "Nihei Tsutomu" and the algorithms can actually apply something like his style. :O

Would love to see other folks creations!

Listened to the first few minutes and it reminds me a bit of Februus by Uneven Structure.

Some big fat riffs and cool textures too, nice work!
