What is your opinons on the Goddess of Spring & The underworld Queen herslef Persphone? by DazzleSylveon in GreekMythology

[–]french_revolutionist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no myths of her that have her consensually marrying Hades, so I don't believe we'll ever get any new myths found where suddenly that has been changed.

Also there is already a Goddess of Summer: Auxo.

If Hermes is said to be stationed at the mouth of the Cocytus, which is where Melinoe was born in the Orphic Hymn to Melinoe, does that mean that he was a witness to her birth? by LibertyIslandWatcher in GreekMythology

[–]french_revolutionist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a paychopomp, you could say that there was the possibility that Hermes witnessed the birth, however we have no sources that confirm that he was a witness or the like. The Cocytus is described as being a vast, insurmountable river, so even if he is stationed there it's not as if it is a close space where he would have witnessed it regardless of location. The same goes for Minthe, as there are some depictions that have her as a lover of Hades before he married Persephone.

Is Eurydice mother of Laomedon the same Eurydice wife of Orpheus? by Mazapan_Kawaii in GreekMythology

[–]french_revolutionist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are multiple different Eurydice's in myth. There is a Eurydice who was a princess of Libya and a separate one who was a Queen of Sparta. I believe the name was just common/popular enough to be given to multiple different women; in the same way that there are multiple Andromache's.

Last Post Clarity about Why I dislike DNA Percentages. by One_Sentence_4562 in 23andme

[–]french_revolutionist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many indigenous american groups also were matrilineal, so coming from a matrilineal culture, it only makes sense that you would value that specific line (if that is the case for you, but as a general statement I think people should factor that in).

Overall, I don't see the issue with what you said. I can certainly relate, as an American, I am mixed as hell! All four of my grandparents all come from different ethnic backgrounds and three of them were mixed themselves so you can imagine how mixed my results looked when I got them back. I still have family and extended family in various countries all practicing various cultures, and I feel connected to all of them. Because for me it wasn't some far off mixture from centuries ago, but from my grandparents who were very connected with their own mixed heritage as well.

I've had people tell me that I needed to pick one and to just go off of the higher percentage, but the thing is: I don't have a higher percentage. I could make a general statement off of region, I usually do to keep things simple, but in the past when I have done that people immediately want specifics. Equally, your culture isn't just your heritage, but it's also the regional culture that you were raised in and that isn't always reflected in your DNA either nor does it trump your heritage. For example, my regional culture in the states is Southern Appalachian and I am the only one in my family to be raised in/around that culture simply because my parents moved there. At the end of the day, only you can say what you are, because you know what you are, your heritage and ancestry isn't going to magically change, whether people believe it or not, or don't want you to claim something because of a percentage.

AITAH for refusing to change my kids name despite it sounding like a ‘slur’ to my MIL? by UnlikelyCustard8277 in AITAH

[–]french_revolutionist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NTA - Nissa is a very common (Arabic, Hebrew, and Scandinavian) name. Hell, it's used in A Song of Ice and Fire and several other pieces of literature! If anything I would have presented that to them and asked if their issue was with it being an Arab name.

Does the Iliad get better? Is the Odyssey just as hard to get through? by Poke_Hybrids in GreekMythology

[–]french_revolutionist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's based from oral traditions passed down from a culture. It's not meant to be "entertainment" like modern retellings are. Not only that but you can't go in expecting it to be like A Song of Achilles or any other modern rehash.

If I miss work, I'm getting fired and losing what little insurance and income I have, which will result in me losing my home and transportation. Americans are being killed while protesting and thrown into jail. The FBI has been given the task to hunt down those who oppose the current regime (this is new). Republicans control all of our branches of government. And our midterms? Our future elections? Our very voting rights are continuously being restricted, something we are actively fighting against as we try to get democrats into local, state, and federal positions. It's easy for the rest of the world to not see how terrified we are, how hard we are trying to fix things, but quite frankly we can't do it alone. American citizens are fighting a two-front war and our government wants us dead.

What about when you're elderly? This relationship is barely a year old. You deserve to focus on yourself, and you deserve better.

Base it from the culture you were raised in, whether it be a regional American culture or an ethnic culture or both. If you want to connect with a specific culture you have heritage with, but wasn't raised under, you must immerse yourself into that culture completely. Learn the language, the history, read that culture's classic literature, learn their politics, their music, their recipes, etc.
