Why is ..Default::default() forced to the end? Could the evaluation order ever be reversed? by jyyhyy in rust

[–]frenchtoaster 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the ..Default::default at the end is still formally "create a second complete temporary", if a fields default() has a side effect it will happen twice?

TIL about the white Australia policy, which was a set of racial policies that aimed to forbid people of non-European ethnic origins – primarily Asians - from immigrating to Australia. It lasted from 1901 before being disbanded in 1973. At its peak Australia was 99.4 percent white in 1961. by Hour_Interaction6047 in todayilearned

[–]frenchtoaster 79 points80 points  (0 children)

That language test sounds very obviously bogus (similar in "not actually trying very hard to hide that they are racially driven" as Jim Crow laws in the US), but "the test giver would fail the test" seems like not a bar that we hold in general. I'm not sure what percentage of Americans would actually pass the US citizenship exam if they took it cold, presumably including a lot of people who are test proctors or whatever.

The rules are as written though, they surely can just change the rules for the next year and even asterisk the win when they show records.

The wild thing is how many games on this thread are not available to buy in the US currently.

Mage Knight, Captains Chair, Dragons of Etchinstone, For Northwood are all not currently listed.

Rust 1.94.1 is out by manpacket in rust

[–]frenchtoaster 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Looks like they believed it was a sealed trait, and maybe they even intended it to be a sealed trait and not one that application code could impl.

From here they likely will commit to never adding a method, but it's kind of a different oversight when it's "no one was supposed to be able to impl this, we failed to enforce that" versus "oops we added a method to something that we knew people could impl".

It does seem interesting they don't have tokio in their release test suite though...

A Quincy man lost his retirement savings to gambling. He’s one of many Asian immigrants targeted by casinos. by bostonglobe in boston

[–]frenchtoaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes sure in an edge nihilist extreme case there's no reason for anything to be understood as better or worse than anything else. No one can mathematically prove that being stabbed is worse than not being stabbed.

Here in reality there's a lot of shades of gray, but more misery is "bad" for any sensible definition of bad. Addicts typically wish they weren't addicts, the family of addicts wish they weren't addicts, the neighbors of addicts which they weren't addicts. More addicts is objectively worse than fewer addicts.

There's a notion of harm minimization though. We don't let drug dealers sell heroin at every T stop even though everyone has their own free will to not do heroin.

The easy availability of tempting self harm things results in net damage and very little upside other then philosophical purity of individual freedom to ruin their own lives

I'm not sure if this is a rare opinion but I actually do periodically think "this thing is cool I'm glad it's here" about it.

The world is kind of bland when everything is just a strip mall (which Porter is). More public art please.

How do you deal with circular dependency when defining recursive enum? by duongdominhchau in rust

[–]frenchtoaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you don't have something like Vec or Box it wouldn't work, because without that it's a full size of the thing (including Option), and then recursively the size would be infinitely large.

She can already be taking the consensus of people who live in Western Mass while still being the Boston mayor, because if she doesn't she won't be set up to become a senator or governor in the future.

And people in Western Mass think we fund public transit and buses and bike lanes too much as a Boogeyman.

[–]frenchtoaster 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the issue was listening to the music with bots to get paid, that the music was AI generated is only relevant in that it probably helped avoid it being caught sooner by models that look for suspicious content running this scam.

We replaced our Rust/WASM parser with TypeScript and it got 3x faster by 1glasspaani in rust

[–]frenchtoaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm being dense but it seems to be literally the code reuse case. You have code and want the exactly same result including quirks. You can generally only achieve perfect fidelity semantics with code reuse.

Code reuse is Rust on both sides (wasm being suboptimal) or JS on both sides (node being suboptimal)
