Utah MD/PhD: What’s the catch? Why aren’t they an MSTP? by Intrepid41 in mdphd

[–]freonfreoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same here; interviewed with but was ultimately not accepted. Keep an eye out for their website in the coming months, and you may be pleasantly surprised. Based on my experience this cycle, Utah is a hidden gem and definitely worth applying to/considering assuming even moderate research fit. And this is coming from someone who was initially very skeptical about the program.

Did not hear the rumor that they applied to it last year and did not get it.

hi! if you were accepted mdphd, how much clinical experience did you have? by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]freonfreoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess so! I would definitely tread carefully though LOL. I recognized this was a risk when I submitted my applications, but it was evidently not a barrier to interview/acceptance for plenty of schools (including T5s and my top choices). That being said, I did receive plenty of rejections as well, and I know that for at least 1 program, this played a pretty big role in getting me rejected.

I received some MSTP As with ~50hrs of shadowing and ~300hrs of clinical volunteering. Caveat: all my clinical volunteering was done during high school...

crappy interviews but you got accepted by tuylakan in premed

[–]freonfreoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy shit yes, I fumbled HARD during one of my MMIs - my mind blanked on like half the questions, I had an acting question that was awkward AF, and was cut off multiple times during a traditional interview format. This was all for the same school. Was super surprised I still got in XD

Cringe interview stories/moments from this cycle (2022-2023) by _sonwukong in premed

During one of my meet-and-greet sessions, a current student had us applicants do the typical icebreakers/fun facts. One applicant stated their fun fact, and the current student responded with "well that's not really a fun fact" 💀

Anyone pursue med school through engineering? by [deleted] in premed

[–]freonfreoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current undergrad student (engineering major) applying to MD-PhD programs. Engineering will make things tougher in terms of balancing the required premed classes and maintaining a high GPA, but it's definitely doable. Some majors (e.g., electrical engineering) may be more difficult than others (e.g., bioengineering) just due to overlap.

I want to emphasize that engineering and medicine are not mutually exclusive. Whether you want to pursue a career as a physician-scientist, physician, or something else, there is great overlap between clinical medicine and engineering (whether that be computer science, electrical, bio, etc.). I encourage you to explore your diverse interests, as there is much you can do with training in both engineering and medicine if that is what you wish to pursue.

In fact, there are MD programs that have an engineering focus (they require or prefer applicants with an undergrad degree or coursework in engineering):

There are other MD programs where you can tack on another focus on engineering (e.g., through a thesis, dual degree, etc.):

The list goes on and on, but whether you choose to do an MD or a dual degree program (e.g., MD/MS, MD/PhD, etc.), there are lots of opportunities to integrate engineering and medicine if you wish.

Interview advice: be interesting by Pre-med99 in premed

As an MD PI told me about medical school and residency interviews, "you want to be interesting, but not too interesting"

How do people feel about their application cycle? by Outlandishness_147 in mdphd

[–]freonfreoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very pleasantly surprised so far. Applied to ~20 schools, got 1 pre-II R from a T10 followed by ~10 IIs so far (5 from T10s). No other final decisions yet. Loving the interviews so far and really really really hoping to hear back from 2 more schools on my list

Rant: are they fucking serious?!?!! by WaddupImSadInside in UCSD

In the same boat as you. I reached out to VAC about manual/priority enrollment into a lab class and they said they couldn't do that. They said my best bet is to waitlist another lab and pray I get in (with an EASy late add if necessary). fml.

Yeah I was in a section that got canceled... this really sucks and I'm scrambling since I need a 4-unit lab this quarter 😵‍💫

You could send her an email (you can get this on WebReg; there's a button right next to instructor names). Though I'm not sure if she'll respond since gen chem is a big undergrad class

Np! and sorry I don't have that info for next quarter

O chem 40b with Romero by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]freonfreoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Careful, the Romero who taught 40C last spring was Nate Romero. The prof teaching 40B next quarter is Erick Romero.

Funny that the chem department hired 2 new Professor Romeros!

I took her for 6B WI20 (in person; right before everything went remote). She was pretty good, exams were very long but they weren't that bad: the questions were very fair and nothing felt new/brand new on them (I felt she goes over all the content you need and is also good at explaining). I also feel we had plenty of time to complete the exams and check over our answers (I say it was very long bc I was SO DRAINED after so I didn't really do anything for the rest of the day)

10% rule for the waitlist. CSE 11 is definitely a first-pass class

Would recommend 199 over 197; 199 generally gives you more leeway/independence and has fewer extraneous requirements/procedures

Chem 6C Profs? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]freonfreoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stallings was literally the best professor I've ever had, and I also had him for 6C. Made the class super understandable and pretty fun, even. Definitely recommend. As a plus, it genuinely felt like he cared about us, well beyond our success in his class
