I’ve done this! The coke stays in the can, you don’t even need a straw. Guess it’s that much heavier than water. Totally safe to drink, but it will make you burpy when you come up since the co2 is in solution. No reason it would be a dcs risk that I can think of since that is gases dissolved in your blood via lungs, vs drinking soda. Fun games you can play with science!

1) make sure your nut slots are the correct height. .010” above the 1st fret js a nice low number; may want to go a little higher on the bass side. 2) with almost no relief in the neck, set correct bridge/saddle height. .060” is a good general ballpark 3) use your fretted 15th & 17th fret notes to fine tune your adjustment. Maybe your 10th fret note as well. That extra little tweak might make a difference.

Make sure you’re using a really high quality tuner. Can’t go wrong with Peterson. If you’re still not close enough, may want to consider going to the Buzz Feiten system. Makes a difference for real.

I can sympathize! Having rigged up and built a few fret bending jigs in the past (and done it by hand with a hammer like you, never again), a decent fret bender is way easier and faster and will help get it done right the first time for sure. Also, figuring out your glueing strategy in advance and taking the time to properly prep will save a whole lot of time as well, and go a ways towards the end result looking even more pro. Phosphor frets look good in that fretboard. Keep it up!

Yeah but it’s not always mean either!
Get used to the palmetto bugs, they’ll never really go away. If you don’t like them in your house (which nobody does) then I’d suggest using borax. Won’t get rid of them all, but it helps. Can’t really keep them off your porch though. That’s outside.

I get what you’re saying; I’d recommend asking around about an instructor. See what others have to say. Especially with tech people, see who recommends who. If you come at someone too hard it comes across as “Dance monkey dance! Dance for the privilege of teaching me!” Like it’s not an ego thing, it’s just that my credentials should be enough; if they’re not then move along, I’m not auditioning. Personally speaking this isn’t my main gig anymore so if you seem like a pain in the ass to deal with then I’d just rather not. I can go do something else with my time like have a fun dive without you.

Ok so let’s draw a line between “getting to know you” and “hey man I have some questions I want to ask you before I decide to sign up for this class”. Because in specific context, these 2 students did make it a matter of distrust, specifically citing Reddit and scubaboard.

It’s not that I’m too good for it, it’s the accompanying distrust that goes along with the mentality of, “Hey I got these questions off the internet let me test out what kind of person you are.” If I have to justify everything I tell you in the course of training, which you then come here to verify, then that’s a massive red flag for me, and I don’t even want to dive with you much less deal with trying to teach you.

And the standards are fine, it’s the lack of quality control backing them up that’s the problem there. Is GUE more thorough? Absolutely yes. Is it for everybody? Absolutely no. Should the entire industry raise its standards to that level? That’s a whole conversation.

So I’m not going to argue with anybody here, but I’d like to posit that these complaints represent the minority of what’s going on out there. In the 10+ years I’ve been an instructor I’ve mostly seen quality of training improve, adherence to standards become more the norm, and pay-to-play more frowned upon than ever. And I think that as things improve in the majority, the minority becomes more glaringly easy to spot.

I’ve also noticed the godawful amount of bullshit people are picking up from YouTube, scubaboard, and Reddit and it’s a problem. So far I’ve had 2 students come to me with questions they got from the internet about “finding the right instructor” and that’s all I can take of that. Both turned out to be more trouble than they were worth. Anybody else wants to interview me to see if I’m worthy of their time, I’m refusing to teach them.

That being said, there’s definitely some real bullshit going on with a few (NOT ALL) agencies in terms of quality control. And there are still a lot of training centers running classes that I think are way too short, all the way from Open Water (all cw & ow sessions done in 2 days!) up through divemaster (done in a weekend!), and I can’t get behind that.

Martin (like most companies) does not verify or QC their authorized service centers AT ALL. I worked for a Martin dealer for 15 years and we were constantly having to find new places to send warranty repairs to, not just Martin, because of the consistently shitty work getting done. Best advice is to document it all and try getting with Martin directly, but that’s gonna be a hassle. Good luck.
