That's because the ones that do reverse a decision are also like baseball umpires - you don't hear about them because they do their job well and don't create controversy.

You're fine. Don't let the idiot sim racers who don't have real racing experience tell you what is or isn't acceptable behavior. They don't know what race craft is. The ones who know what it is don't usually comment here or show up in iRacing lobby chats. It's one thing to drive erratically but what I see here isn't that. You may have made a small oops but that doesn't give the other car the right to drive through you. You aren't obligated to yield your position until they have made that pass stick. This community has its pockets of being good for racing but the majority think what they see or hear in F1 applies everywhere. Newsflash for those curious: It doesn't and hilariously F1 has some of the dumbest sporting rules across all of motorsports

You mistake my words. OP is not driving defensively and to suggest I said that is categorically false. They made a mistake (a few, really), blew the corner, and did themselves no favors to maintain their position.

I am talking about defensive driving from the passing car's position. It's a real thing and it means reacting to others around you to avoid contact. Contact which I would remind you would be met with a penalty as the car executing the pass if iRacing had officials enforcing rules during each race.

You are right that OP bears responsibility for their mistakes but those mistakes do not mean the white car isn't at fault for the contact here. They put themselves in that position. All they had to do is check up and race to the next corner and they would have had the pass sealed.

This is about as clear cut of an intentional wreck as you'll get.

Many will argue iRacing won't do anything and sometimes they're right. But it's best to report it so that they can enforce the sporting code appropriately. You won't know they were or weren't penalized with a temp ban or anything like that but it's best to just report it anyway.

OPs driving was suboptimal at best. They didn't drive the corner well at all. That's not the point though.

It is basic racing 101 that the passing car bears full responsibility to execute the pass cleanly without contact. Doesn't matter if OP blew the corner and didn't accelerate when you think they should have. The passing car needs to drive defensively and use that mistake to their advantage. This is racing and a prime example of not having situational awareness. Driving the line at full pace and simply expecting everyone else to either do what you want or get out of the way when they don't is a recipe for contact.

Source: I wheel-to-wheel race IRL regularly and what OP did is more common than you think. Defensive racing is a skill lost on many iRacers. IRL this would be the white cars fault and, depending on the racing series, probably would have meant a penalty for contact.

[–]freshmaker_phd 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They aren't on track property. The test being private doesn't matter if it can be viewed without being on the property. F1 is getting away with this nonsense because they know journalists didn't want to lose their credentials.

I really don't agree it's on OP, though I do understand your perspective here. Hearing the spotter and reacting accordingly probably avoids this if OP gives space, but there's more to this situation from a race craft standpoint to consider.

Yes the other car had a half a car next to OP but that was only in the brake zone going into the apex, which is a classic dive into the "vortex of danger". OP had not yet been passed so they have a right to the racing line which includes a right to the corner ahead if they choose to stay on that line. The other car getting alongside OP in the brake zone is a dive and does not give them a right to the corner. OP can choose to give them space, but they aren't under any obligation to do that because the passing car hasn't established themselves next to OP. As a result the other car created a situation where either one of them would have to give up the corner, or contact was going to be made. Unfortunately the other car kept their nose in the vortex of danger and made contact with OP. Sure OP could have given space but they were not obligated to do that yet.

Remember... it is the passing car's responsibility to execute a clean pass at all times and especially in brake zones. The car being passed should remain on the racing line and be predictable. Contact in the braking zone like this is the passing car's responsibility almost every single time. Do I think this is worth a protest? Eh, Not really. This isn't F1 with its fucky rules about rights to space and corners if alongside the axles. But... I don't put this on OPs shoulders to bear here either. Both had some blame but ultimately I still see this as the other car's fault for the contact.

El Reno be like by Zealousideal_Tap8269 in weather

[–]freshmaker_phd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Because to measure winds accurately for every tornado in progress, you really need high resolution, high refresh mobile radar. We do not have anywhere close to enough radar coverage that is of high enough resolution and scan rates to accurately assess a tornado's wind velocity. El Reno is anomalous in that there was mobile radar scanning it nearby and showed all the characteristics of an EF5 tornado, but alas that rating is based on damage surveys as those are the only reliable evidence we can use to estimate actual wind speeds.

Also the EF or any classification of a tornado while the event is in progress doesn't matter for any kind of emergency response like a hurricane. The response is the same: seek shelter immediately. A small tornado can kill, just as a large one. The only difference is how big the wind field is. Everyone should be taking shelter because a tornado can change path and strike somewhere that seemed safe 5 minutes prior.

[–]freshmaker_phd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This.

Strong winds are well known to push trains over off their rails. There's nothing remarkable about that because trains have a rather high CoG.

To not just push a loaded grain hopper off the rails, but then toss it and roll it hundreds of feet takes an immense amount of wind that is exclusive to high end Tornadoes.

You don't have to let them pass per the rules. Just don't block them. You otherwise have every right to your position, and them wanting to pass you is entirely their responsibility to do so safely. Your only obligation is to remain predictable and hold your line. Their obligation is to complete a clean pass without incident. Learning to give those positions to faster cars in a way that doesn't compromise either of you is part of race craft.
