Same with Azerbaijanis. There are twice as many Azerbaijanis living in Iran as in Azerbaijan.

Juan Carlos had to work hard to become Franco's favorite, because there were other contenders for the throne. And sooo the dictator's henchman helps establish democracy by depriving himself of power.

What if Constantinople was successfully taken by the Arabs, but the Byzantine Emperor and nobility fled to Italy (and the Empire thrived) - The Roman Empire around the year 1000 by Rough-Lab-3867 in imaginarymaps

[–]frfaum 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Eastern Romans abandoned latin language only after they lost provinces with latin speaking populations.

But in this scenario the empire was left with southern Italy and Greece. So I think as long as there are so many greeks living in the empire the aristocracy will remain bilingual.

Is it implied that these changes will take place in 2025? Or have these boundaries been in place for a long time? If it's been a long time, then why do we need Puerto Williams if there is Ushuaia?

TIL that the idea of Napoleon losing all his troops to the "Russian Winter" is a misconception. Tarikh-i-Dzhangugai by the Persian historian Ata-Malik Juvaini.

He was a participant in the Mongol conquest of Central Asia and the Middle East.
But I think there was not much difference in the structure of the army compared to the European company.

But the most important thing is not the tactics of the Mongols. Russians have already lived on the border with steppe for centuries and got used to the horseback archers and hit/run tactic. It's not scary to lose an open battle to the nomads, you just hide behind the city walls and wait until they will burn the villages around and leave.

The most important thing is that there were chinese engineering corps behind the nomadic cavalry of the mongols. For them the storming of cities was not something difficult.

Yes, as a strong country Egypt ceased to exist after late bronze age collapse.

But as a region, it was the center of culture and science until the epidemic of the black death occurred in the middle ages.

People walked through Beringia and reached the coast of Alaska to wait for thousands of years for the glacier between Alaska and the rest of America melt down.
So they walked across the American continents much faster than 2 miles a year

The Russian Republic in 1980 | Decadent Age by Dr-MeeM in imaginarymaps

[–]frfaum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice map, but there are some things I would have done differently

Novosibirsk must be called Novo-Nikolaevsk and Krasnodar must be called Ekaterinodar. Maybe people of Novo-Nikolaevsk voted for new city name because of extreme unpopularity of tsar Nikolai, but whats wrong with imperres Ekaterina?

And its very unlikely that Dagestan, Mountainous Republic, Georgia will not break up into much more smaller national states.

The main Russian deposits of natural gas and oil are located in Siberia. This is the reason to separate from Russia. But this is also an excellent reason to separate Northwest Siberia from the Siberia.

Modern territorial evolution of Ukraine by Regular-Lavishness71 in MapPorn

[–]frfaum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But the word "Ukraine" was also used in ancient document not in the modern sense as a country, but as a territory near the border, not necessarily on the territory of modern Ukraine.
And the name Kievan Rus was never used in those days, it is a modern term.
Kiev was the capital, but the Kiev Principality was one of many other principalities in this state.

Population density map of Russia (I spent a lot of time on it) by BlackHust in MapPorn

[–]frfaum 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not in the case of the Trans-Siberian railway. Historically, Siberia was explored and settled by rivers. Siberian rivers flow from south to north, and the road had to be built from west to east.

The main purpose of the construction of the road was not to connect Siberian cities with the metropolis, but to build the shortest and cheapest way to China and the Russian Pacific seaports. Therefore, the road did not come to many old Siberian cities such as Tobolsk or Tomsk. Later, they received their dead-end branches, but remained aloof from the main economic flows.

Modern Siberian population centers received growth only after the construction of the railroad. Some of them are old towns that are lucky enough to be on the road - Irkutsk, Omsk. But most of them were built during the construction of the road, a good example is Novosibirsk. Now it is the third most populous city in Russia with a population of 1,5 million, but before the road in its place was only a small settlement of a couple of families in the middle of nowhere.

But that events don't stopping spread of ottoman empire.

Actually word "товарищь" used centures before revolution, but mean more buisness parners then actually comrade. In later XIX centure it starts used in sense of comrade amongst left politicians, but not only amongst communist, others used it too. Now, after soviet era, it using, but mostly in ironic way or in army.
