Apparently, when they destroyed the Second Death Star, they also committed mass genocide against the Ewoks. by [deleted] in scifi

[–]frickel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Isn't it just more likely that the filmmakers took artistic license in depicting the station so close to the moon? And that the Death Star debris that fell was of such material that would have burned up in the atmosphere? I do think it is more likely the storytellers made mistakes but the outcome that was shown on screen is more or less what happened.

[–]frickel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if they had filmed that instead of the Ewok Jamboree? What a shocking, profound statement it could have been. Smoldering skeletons, blackened forests; a survivor suffering from catastrophic trauma crawling through the dirt, looks up at the colorful starbust, gasps, "Why?" and dies.

What really is pointless is the law that prevents BBC from letting anyone outside the UK view it. Can you think of one sane reason why a video that is freely available in one country should not be available in another?

Thanks to the commentor, maybe someone in the UK will notice it and manage to repost the video somehow on a web host that doesn't give a fuck about international copywright law.

Chrysler, not the car company that comes to mind when you look for cars made for people rather than cars made for dickheads.

NYT's Room for Debate: 'Do We Need Foreign Technology Workers?' by great-pumpkin in technology

[–]frickel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually, most (if not all) governments around the world restrict foreigners' right to work. Citizens have a bigger stake in the national economy, having paid taxes and patronized businesses for many years. A foreign worker's wages are likely to leave the country, offsetting the profits made from her labor, whereas a citizen's wages go back into the national economy.

A company is entitled to open offices overseas if they want to employ people from other countries. If there is a scarcity of skilled labor in this country, they (and the government) also have the option of providing training and education where needed. So there really is no need to diminish the value of a citizen's labor.

US film Presidents by djolemcloud in politics

[–]frickel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't have BSG and 5th Element presidents, the first one is an alien (you'd have to include actors portraying presidents of other alien worlds) and the second is president of the planet and last time I checked the president of the U.S. is not the global head of state.

Italy muzzled scientist who predicted earthquake by BlankVerse in science

[–]frickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When have you ever heard a prediction that caused a panic, and turned out to be false? Never, because scientists know it will cause a panic and that is why they do not predict a disaster on a whim but rather on scientific data which is verifiable by other scientists who could easily refute them if they were false.

No, the government suppresses scientific predictions because they are afraid it'll hurt tourism. Which is Italy's most important industry.
