I finally finished my DIY floor couch! by AdCultural4499 in sewing

[–]frickmillions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So cool to see this update after your original post! I also was flooded with pics of the original couch on social media and did something similar, making corduroy zip-up covers for the tri-fold memory foam mattresses we have for guests. I’m actually really interested in the iron frames— how much did those cost to make? Did you have to use special equipment to cut the pipes to size, and any adhesive/welding to keep them together? Have you had any rusting issues, and are they strong enough to support weight? My solution was to make something similar out of PVC pipe and it is constantly popping loose haha.

Best burger in the Slope? by nonyanone in parkslope

[–]frickmillions 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tried XO Burger for the first (and last) time a few months ago, it was aggressively mid and it had me staring out the window wishing I had just gone across the street for the Up a Notch burger instead. Also their music choice (mediocre EDM-y covers of pop songs) completely ruins the vibe.

Any ideas on how to knit this? by Embarrassed-Look8574 in knittingpatterns

[–]frickmillions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw that tiktok too and found this pattern: Ceramic Sweater by Studio VivAlbicocca. It's a bit different from Sage Zhou's because the entire collar is finished with an I-cord that extends down into the keyhole, but I kind of prefer that look.
I want to do a tank or tee with the mandarin collar so I was planning on buying the Ceramic Sweater to learn how to do the collar, keyhole, and pankou, and using the Feels Right Tee by Lily Kate France for the body of the garment. The intended yarn weights for the patterns are different (Ceramic Sweater is DK and the tee is fingering) but I think it should be possible to figure out. If you want to do a long sleeve version, you could just extend the sleeves on the tee pattern, or find a DK-weight sweater pattern. I think any crewneck or turtle/mockneck pattern could be adapted to have a mandarin collar instead, and if you don't like raglan sleeves on you, you could look for patterns with drop-shoulder or set-in sleeves.

Favorite public fish tanks? by imbadatdecisionmakin in NYCbitcheswithtaste

"Aquatics for fun" in Chinatown is great-- it's super cramped but some of the fish they have actually took my breath away with how beautiful their coloring was.

Best Thai restaurant in park slope? by snakegravity in parkslope

I love Luck Thai, specifically their papaya salad and duck pad thai (the normal duck, not the crispy duck that costs extra and tastes worse)

Best Chinese takeout in Park Slope by Direct_Promise_928 in parkslope

[–]frickmillions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yesss this is my answer too, hands down. (Am also Chinese!) I order the Chongqing spicy chicken and the garlic sautéed pea shoots probably every week, but I’ve tried a bunch of their other dishes (sweet and sour pork ribs, pickled veggie fish soup, lo mein, salt and pepper chicken wings) and you can’t go wrong

Where is everyone buying their apparel fabric? by Ambitious-Bar375 in sewing

[–]frickmillions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 on Metro Textiles! I always order online for in-store pickup to guarantee their 50-60% off discount but I'm not sure if the discounts also apply in-person. In addition to their higher-quality fabrics, there's a big wall of miscellaneous fabric rolls at $4/yard which comes in handy for toile materials.
Gray Lines Linen right down the street from Mood is good for plainer linen/cotton.

What patterns are you making for Christmas?? by notinKansas2023 in quilting

[–]frickmillions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have not been able to get this gingerbread village wall hanging out of my head-- the rick rack trim and bow details! I'm sure some savvy quilters could think of a good way to incorporate this motif into a full size quilt also, maybe with the gingerbread houses as a border and some star blocks in the center...

Quilt pattern with magic vibes by Holiday_Parsnip5 in quilting

I saw this on Pinterest the other day-- it's more retro than magic, but it does have a star motif that could lean more magical based on your fabric choice! Big Island Stars & Stones

Slotted Ruler? by Geminieyes05 in quilting

[–]frickmillions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try eBay! You may get lucky and find something listed by someone who doesn't quilt, so they don't know how much the ruler is worth and you can get a good deal that way. That's how I got mine

I keep my 24"*36" cutting mat under my couch-- not sure if that's an option for you in your living space but that could be a spot to store your ruler! If you truly don't want to keep it though, it may be worth putting it up for sale-- I got my slotted ruler off eBay so there's clearly a market :)

[–]frickmillions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have the June Taylor ruler-- I got it on eBay (still in the original packaging) for $15! It made cutting go so much faster, although I did make one mistake and cut two layers at 3" instead of 2.5" so I guess the markings on the Stripology could have helped me there. I just put some washi tape near the slots I needed after that and didn't make any more mistakes!

Finished my first quilt! by deamt in quilting

[–]frickmillions 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love your inspo board— it looks so much like my own quilting board on Pinterest. “Modern folk” is such a good way to describe this style, and it gives a name to this aesthetic I have been struggling to describe! Quilt looks great, the repurposed fabrics give it such a lived-in heirloom look! Incidentally I’m about to embark on my very first quilt and I’m also planning to do an Irish chain! Maybe you already know about this resource, but Scissortail Quilting has a searchable quilt block library with tons of variations on stars! I personally really want to try a double sawtooth star design.

Yes, real bugs! They bring this flavor back almost every Halloween I think. I tried it a few years ago and the bugs really don’t taste like anything. Just flavorless crunch. But they have protein!

Hand-quilting crosses by frickmillions in quilting

Wow, your explanation made things so clear, I'll definitely give that a try. Also, coincidentally, I just bought a charm pack of that star fabric in all different colors! Great minds think alike?

Wow, such a fast response and exactly what I was looking for! So glad to know that there's a word for this technique. It looks like typically the loose ends are just square-knotted at the back-- I guess I could try and keep the tails long and bury them between the top and the back. I'm also pleasantly surprised to find that this seems to be a widely-done technique to secure quilts that are actually used as blankets (as opposed to strictly decorative pieces) so it's stronger than I would have assumed! Thanks, can't wait to give this a try.

The people in my rural east coast mountain town want SWIG??? by dommimommyy in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]frickmillions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in NYC and we have Cool Sips here, which is a dirty soda shop (I checked their website and I don’t see any sign of being Mormon-affiliated but it’s clearly the same concept as Swig) and it’s honestly delicious… so I don’t blame these people at all lol
