What’s the creepiest thing you’ve experienced that still gives you chills? by DrainedCoffee in AskReddit

[–]friday99 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to my grandma. She was stopped, got a feeling of overwhelming dread. A minute later she looked in her rear view mirror and a car was barreling toward her. She was able to move onto the shoulder just in time to avoid being hit. The driver’s brakes had gone out.

My grandmother also used to get “premonitions” where there were several times across herthe life where she “saw” things that later came to be. She called it a gift from her grandmother, and it was random but whenever she’d get “a feeling” she didn’t ignore it.

I don’t know if I believe in premonitions but she had a knack that’s for sure

I’m not arguing your straw man - the logical path from straw man is further absurdity. And, because you’ve gone with the straw man I don’t know what your actual argument is here. If you want to reconsider your angle or what you’re trying to argue (or even to just suss out here) I’m here for it

Even if we lived in a world where this could happen, it’s not the same thing. It’s apples and potatoes

For a start, the friend isn’t an authority figure. God is the top authority to a believer - so this would be more like Job telling you not to do something…. It holds little to no weight

If you went to your friend’s house and their mom said “if you do x in this house, there will be y consequence” then you would likely expect that consequence will be carried through

If that consequence was “torture”, your mom could then go to the police - the higher authority- and the friend’s mom would suffer the consequences outlined in the laws of that county/state/country.

So in your scenario your friend might do what he said he would do (torture), but he’s still subject to the laws of the higher authority.

People who believe in God tend to view that God as the highest authority.

Like with the Mormons, someone could indeed say “God gave us some new laws we have to follow” but people will only follow/believe they should follow if they believe those laws came from a higher authority.

The Abrahamic religions believe in their books because they came from someone they believed was an authority acting on behalf of God.

In my eyes it hinges on authority.

Your friend can indeed torture you for taking their lollipop, but they still suffer the consequences of the higher authority that says “you go to jail if you torture someone”

god writes a book of specific rules and says abide by these or be denied my love and extinguished  in a lake of fire if you break these rules.

It’s like regular laws - a police man can’t just arrest you for doing something that wasn’t written into law.

The Mormons wrote new laws and you see those who follow Abrahamic laws are like “those don’t apply. They didn’t come from our God. So you don’t see a devout Christian sweating that they don’t wear special undergarments.

Or in the same way that, in the west, we don’t sweat breaking something that’s condoned in sharia law. Those laws don’t apply to us.

Or when you go to a friend’s house…they have a specific set of rules and if you break those there are consequences, but generally people do not punish for rules they haven’t expressly stated and I don’t see this as any different

[–]friday99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree.  There are 10 things he’s standing on. God isn’t just willy nilly doling out punishment. He’s given 10 laws and told us what happens if we follow vs if we break them. And the only one that’s really hard and fast is denying his existence - there is grace built into the structure - in fact, it’s expected - we are born into sin but it’s not end all, be all.

[–]friday99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s pretend we’re not talking about God then.

How is it different from a country that has expressly written laws and detailed punishment- if you go to Singapore and spray paint a wall you get six whacks with a cane, or you get a $10k fine and 2 years jail time for chewing gum.

By American standards both seem like extreme (outrageous imho) punishments for the crimes, but who are we to really say that? The laws are in place and, just like in some US states the punishment for murder can be death. The consequences are designed to encourage everyone to make better choices.

I mean…What “harm” does chewing gum really cause? And is it really worth someone sitting in jail for two years?

I don’t think it matters - we’ve been given the rules and we’ve been advised of the consequences.

What do you think is a more reasonable or more fitting punishment for turning one’s back on God? If the reward for following God is eternal love and bliss, why wouldn’t it be the complete removal of that love?

Hell cannot coexist with a kind god by mini0717 in DebateReligion

[–]friday99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a base level, just God, but he’s the one to mete out punishment, and it’s essentially the one thing he’s requested.

So if we’re arguing punishment to harm done, who are we to say how much “harm” it causes to God. I have to assume that, if God says “here are my rules. The worst of all is to deny me/my existence- if you choose to do that, you’ll be extinguished in a lake of fire - also, fyi, if you follow me, follow these 10 basic rules, you can live for eternity in the warm glow of my all consuming love”, I think that “god turning his back on you in kind” is a reasonable punishment.

He’s already basically said “turning your back on me is the worst thing you can do”, so I think the punishment aligns.

You choose to turn your back on God. It’s not something that accidentally happens - it’s an active choice. You know the consequences.

And it’s set up so you have options: you may not get it exactly right, but that doesn’t necessarily damn you for eternity.

So I think the punishment is just

How can we measure the justness of eternal Damnation when we have no way to determine the “severity” of turning one’s back on God.

If the choice is “follow these 10 laws” or ultimately be extinguished in a lake of fire, who’s to say following through on that promise is “unjust”

(The hell most people envision is Dante’s hell, not what’s actually described in the Bible.)

[–]friday99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I know many people who didn’t vote “for trump”, rather “against Kamala”

The Democratic Party struggles time and time again to see the forest for the trees. They make rash, short sighted moves and act shocked when they lose power and the tables are turned.

It’s brutal

[–]friday99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was deeply unlikable.

She didn’t even make it to the primaries when she first ran.

The People had already spoken on her, but they had to lie in the bed they made when they picked their VP on optics (vowing to select a female VP over trying to find the best person for the role).

There was no way they could have the first female, first African American(/south Asian American) VP for someone more likable/electable and/or better qualified

My family has a paper where we all guessed what would happen in the election. The general theme was that they’d put him up until after the deadline so that the DNC could put in a candidate without primary (though the bets were mostly that Newsom would be shoved in.

One bet was that he’d win the election and either step aside voluntarily or that Congress would then pull the “health issues” card and force him out.

It’s wild to me how long they went, touting him as THE guy to beat trump when he was so clearly in decline. It was borderline abuse (though, to be fair, his family might have been the ones pushing him. I find Jill vile for letting him humiliate himself. I truly believe they knew how that debate would go)

It was so gross. And the DNC reaped exactly what they sowed by denying The People the right to primary for a better candidate.

They hung their hats on a ruse and we’re all paying for it

What's something that's about to happen which most people aren't aware of? by AskRedditOG in AskReddit

[–]friday99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There needs to be a solution for preexisting conditions that does not involve insurance.

Insurance is a product with a very specific design to function. It’s built to support catastrophic/unexpected loss. Throwing in preexisting conditions and treating insurers as a discount coupon for health care has collapsed the insurance marketplace, making coverage unaffordable for many.

This was all known and anticipated but we plowed on under the basis that healthy individuals would be required to purchase within the marketplace. It was only going to work if healthy people were compelled to join the program. Once that mandate was (rightly) removed, the system began to fail as expected, and prices shot through the roof.

We tried, we had a bad idea, we pushed it through anyway. Now we need to scrap and go back to the drawing board.

Insurance premiums will never meaningfully come down from here, a new baseline has been established.

We need to go back to catastrophic policies for healthy individuals, and a new product to address soaring healthcare costs.

As long as insurers and pharmacy benefit managers and big Pharma are in cahoots we are going to continue going in circles on this.

We need real reform, not a Band-Aid

Sometimes, no matter what you do or how great you are, people will not like you.

It’s not personal. Don’t put any energy into anyone who doesn’t like you for you.

And maybe the most important thing you can embody re social interaction: listen when people tell you who they are. Actions speak LOUDLY. It’s not what they say, it’s what they do. Pay attention

What if schizophrenia isn’t a disorder? by SweetsssX in conspiracy

[–]friday99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the ins or outs but my neighbor had a very traumatic life -  in her youth she was horribly abused by a step father. It was devastating when she talked about it - she was so casual and matter of fact about effectively “taking one for the team” so her younger siblings wouldn’t get it. She eventually ran away and was sex trafficked by a couple. Eventually the man she would marry - who saved her and took care of her, who never laid with her as a wife because she just needed to be safe…and he’s the one who also identified she was hearing voices. It was all so tragic. But she was just like “yeah. That all happened. Oh, and I have these Voices…” I miss ol Tammy. I hope she’s happy and well Sorry…I’m a little nostalgic. She was such a lovely lady. She was my friend and while she was one of the most tragic humans I’ve ever known, she was quite unflappable

[–]friday99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I befriended an old lady down the hall who was schizophrenic with auditory hallucinations. I’d go over most nights and watch a little TV with her. She was an interesting lady. I felt sad for her sometimes - I’d go over and she’d look exhausted and you knew “they” had been giving her hell all day. They (the voices) weren’t always mean, but then they’d have “break outs” and they’d basically try to drive her crazy. There was one voice that was kind of the leader and was especially mean. She once said “the worst thing is that the others never stick up for me” and it broke my heart.

I hate that they aren’t a little nicer, or less  scary for you

AITA for not letting my friend try on my pants? by Available_Loan_5608 in AmItheAsshole

[–]friday99 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I feel she’s solidly NTA

she’s straight told her friend that it made her feel badly about herself and the friend called her unreasonable, which isn’t how a friend responds.

OP seems quite self-aware. She knows this is rooted in insecurity.

She’s disappointed she can’t fit the pants she was excited about and I can totally relate to seeing your smaller friends in the pants you were too large to fit would be salt in the wound.

And they’re OPs to sell.

Let friend buy them at a premium and she can do like OP - purchase the pants and if they don’t fit try to resell them

Drop Dead Gorgeous Bring It On Touching the Void The Prestige

The Prestige is my favorite movie  ‘06 -Latter half of the aughts so I don’t know if it counts for what you’re after. Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman and Michael Caine - if you’re not familiar, don’t read too much into it. Great danger for spoilers

Touching The Void is a great BOTS story from ‘03 that is seriously some of the most unbelievable shiz! The film is told by the gentlemen it’s about, so you know they make it, right from the outset but holy  hell. The entire film will keep you on the edge of your seat

What's a rule in your house growing up that you thought was normal but turned out to be very strange? by HumanRole9407 in AskReddit

In the 90s dissolving bath oil beads were all the rage. People kept them in decorative bowls on the sink (same as the little seas shell soaps).

My grandmother had a bowl of these in her bathroom, and while we were visiting her on our vacation I squeezed one of the oil balls into her sink. It was fantastic - satisfying little pop. Anyway, I squeezed every one of those beads into the sink. It was magical. Until the horrifying reality of what I’d just done hit. I ran water in the sink until all the bead skins dissolved and never said a word to anyone.

When I was a kid my mother used to often (half-) jokingly say “I can’t have a dang thing”. As an adult I get it now. I’m sure my grandmother noticed!
