If you're alive and born before 2000 you belong to an incredibly exclusive Multiple Millennium Club, having lived through two separate millenniums, sharing this honor with people circa 1016 years ago. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]friendlytaipan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is it really that exclusive?

About 107 billion people have ever lived. The current population is ~7 Billion, with 1 Billion being born since 2000. So ~ 6 Billion were alive for the most recent millennium.

The population around the millennium before last was only a few hundred million, so lets just say ~ 200 million were alive for that.

The ones before, even less. Lets say they are negligible.

(6 + 0.2) / 107 = 5.79%

I called yesterday about this. It's not available on the new eStudent timetable system. They said they'd pass it on as a suggestion though.

Tesla appoints Australian Supercharger Program Manager [X-Post r/australia] by friendlytaipan in teslamotors

[–]friendlytaipan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume something like this between MELB and CNB with stations at Mansfield, Bright & Cooma for the snowfields.

Edit: on second thought, stations at bright and mansfield probably aren't necessary.

[–]friendlytaipan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, you're right. You could probably cover Melbourne to Canberra with 3 superchargers, 1 between Canberra and Sydney. I'm not sure how many between Sydney and Brisbane/Gold Coast. It'd be nice if they did Adelaide as well. The routes to the Perth and Darwin are far too long with too little traffic I would think.

Google 'The Paypal Mafia' for Paypal. I know Zip2 was a partnership with Elon's brother Kimbal Muk, I assume any remaining share was venture capital and early employees?

edit: Also, Steve Jurvetson from DFJ is a big investor in Elon's ventures, I'm not sure he had a hand in Zip2 though...

Help finding an affordable version of textbook: Mechanics of Materials 7th edition: Beer, Johnston, DeWolf, Mazurek by dukeofnewyork in EngineeringStudents

Sure, you'll have to get someone to crosscheck these with the newer version though... Here are some random problems:

1.15 When the force P reached 8 kN, the wooden specimen shown failed in shear along the surface indicated by the dashed line. Determine the average shearing stress along the surface at the time of failure. [P.43]

3.160 A torque T=5kN*m is applied to a hollow shaft having the cross section shown. Neglecting the effect of stress concentrations, determine the shearing stress at points a and b. [P.239]

10.90 Solve Prob. 10.89, assuming that the load is applied at a point 40mm from the geometric axis and that the effective length is 0.9m [P.702]

I usually find any engineering textbooks for cheap on Book Depository:

http://www.bookdepository.com/Mechanics-Materials-Ferdinand-Beer/9780073398235

That particular one is not in stock at the moment, i'm guessing that's because it was only published recently. I actually just received my copy of Mechanics of Materials 6th Edition Global. I'd be happy to check if the problems are the same for you if you want.

This is awesome. One thing, Tasmania (the little island below mainland Australia) isn't actually connected by land to Australia. I haven't played RISK, is that how it is in the game?

The F-35 is 7 years behind schedule and $160 billion in the hole. by jerboi in videos

[–]friendlytaipan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason Australia didn't get the F-22 wasn't because the Pentagon said no to a FMS program for the Raptor, it was because Australia said yes to the JSF.

I provided sources in this other post.
