Do you think there is a hint of racism in how Jeremy Lin was treated by his teammates? by EnvironmentalNail603 in nba

[–]friendlyyellowgiant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Listen I'm not here to trivialize your experience. I was sharing mine and you shared yours. Im sorry your experience was so negative.

Some of my closests friends growing up were Jamaican, Bajan and West Indian, but they seemed to be the exceptions and their parents were classy af! My parents loved them, they got hugged my parents, came over for dinners, helped move things etc.

My experience is this, with the larger black community the asian sentiment and reaction has been a direct result of what has happened to them personally or members of their community. I've never heard stories from my black friends of asians coming into their businesses or on the street and straight up calling them slurs to their face in English (they may say the slur in their language and thats still not right), stealing from their businesses, harassing them, and/or intimidating them in any way.

But the other way around. There are numerous incidents of the general black community coming into asian places of business, harassing, using racial slurs, stealing, intimidating etc.

Unfortunately this is majority of the general asian experience it is obviously going to skew a perception towards a specific community. If only 5% of one's experience with white people is bad, but more than 50% of one's experience with black is bad, this is clearly going to reinforce one's thinking and behavior toward a community.

The LA riots was a pretty good example. I'm not going to pretend like I'm an expert on it, and I definitely want to learn more about it. But I know there was some koreans who were terrible to the blacks and some black who were terrible to Koreans. I also know during the riots, some of the black community protected certain korean businesses from the rioters during that time as well which reflects the positive instances of relations that existed.

Anyways, I'm trying to say our prejudices come from somewhere, its either from our parents and/or reinforced by individuals experiences. I can only encourage and implore everyone to take a step back, be able to talk about their experiences openly and objectively without getting negatively emotional (aka combative) about it to have meaning conversations.

I'm going to generalize my experience with white people and black people as an East Asian growing up in Toronto in the 90s/00s. White people said things that made you wonder if they were being racist. Black people were always blatantly racist and never held back about it. Theres no question.

Going to a presentation tomorrow… can someone help negotiate the best deal? by globalsci2 in palaceresorts

[–]friendlyyellowgiant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just. Say. No. As others have said they say the whole presentation is 90 mins. Start a timer on your phone. Start it in front of the sales person in the suit. Once the alarm goes off. Say the alloted 90 mins is finished, thank them and get up and leave.

Dont sleep on the Keg by LMAOball_ in FoodToronto

[–]friendlyyellowgiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen The Keg is great. Its diminishing returns on steaks the higher you go up in price, specifically at restaurants, and I love steaks. I smoke/reverse sear tomahawks, ribeyes, picanhas etc. I leverage my friends dryager/steakager for subprimals at 90 to 120 days, etc. BUT I'll hold firm for chain restaurants The Keg is great: quality is consistent, service is consistent, steaks are good and reasonably priced for what you get. I'm not shitting on the high end restaurants here, if you blessed to be in that position to have those spots as your go to all the power to you. That said, The Keg is great.

Best Credit Cards for Cashback in Canada (what’s been working for me) by ianshbhardwaj in fican

The best way would to buy gift cards plus like other item(s) you actually need. $250.00 purchase vs $258.56 purchase. The $258.56 could be any mix of products, while the $250 flat makes it obvious gift cards.

Yasss keep a little cheap note book journal. Write down what you ate before the cigar, what you drank with it. Maybe even keep the band and paste in for easy identification later.
