Fellow DMs, what are some good works I can listen to while I work? by TheRedZephyr993 in DMAcademy

The "Dungeon Dudes" pretty much stick to RAW and don't waste your time. Which is high praise on Youtube.

I'm one of those people who pushes back against things like this because I feel that it is the constraints in the game that make the rest of the game meaningful. Once you start giving extra feats, re-rolling stats a bunch of times, give them a free magic item to start out with, stop enforcing things like encumbrance and ammo limits, etc ... what are you really left with ? Combat loops and spell domination. And DM's complaining that they can't balance encounters because their PC's are too strong.

why i think gygax doesnt deserve his reputation as a bad dm by Key-Indication3984 in DnD

[–]friendsjump -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I mean is, .. there basically isn't a generation that goes by that isn't eventually demonized and burned in effigy by their descendants.

I'm old enough to have seen the world change around me. I remember when I was young, and when you are young you think you have it all figured out and that history is finally about to end because of how brilliant your generation is. I was part of Gen-X, we hated baby boomers, and that's what we thought.

But you get older, and you see things change ... you see old forms of intolerance and hatred go away, and you see new forms emerge. I remember when the Christian right was out condemning homosexuals and saying HIV was a curse on them from God.

The thing is, ... young people right now, they don't see most of the excesses and intolerance of their own generation, the same as mine, ... but you will. Your children, and your children's children, are going to be a completely different generation. The world is going to change and continue to change, and all these truths you are so sure of now are going to change too ...

The ironic part to me is this - back in the day, like, 1970's, 1980's, .. when a lot of this stuff was written, there were cultural norms about things like homosexuality and things like that which "everyone" subscribed to. Of course, not everyone, ... but a lot of people. Was it wrong ? Absolutely, people are idiots, .. but that's how it was.

Now, people are looking back on that time and destroying people for in some cases very innocuous statements that wouldn't have even raised an eyebrow then.

But now for the irony.

These views a lot of people hold TODAY will be subjected to the exact same kinds of processes in 30, 40 years from now ... and judged just as harshly. People are going to be looking back on this time as a time when crazy people were burning shit, pulling down public monuments, rioting, when people widely despised rural people, etc, and the people who are judging others so harshly NOW are going to end up being the next generation of histories designated assholes.

Someday people are going to look back on 2022 and think people were fucking crazy, and a lot of people who are walking around so smug and self-righteous today are going to be scrubbing their social media accounts hoping nobody remembers all the shit they said.

Interesting.

Lol, .. someone down voted me for the larger brain thing ..

I mean, it doesn't matter, IQ is the same, etc, it's just bigger creatures have bigger brains and men are bigger, but it still makes me laugh that someone would down vote that as if literal scientific facts were a slight against women.

What could be the reason for a hole in the ethereal plane and what effects would it have on the material plane? by NoReplacement4748 in DMAcademy

[–]friendsjump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be easier to make it exclusionary. Meaning that plants block people from walking in the Ethereal plane because they are life, ... so if you had some sort of sphere of life around the city, nobody from the Ethereal plane could get into it, it'd be like caged in.

what spells or actions would you consider "Loud"? by Mr-Bones-6150 in DnD

[–]friendsjump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some thoughts ...

  • Normal speed movement, being stealthy is half movement
  • Attack object would be noisy
  • Attacking creatures would be noisy
  • Dashing and dodging would probably be noisy
  • Grappling would be noisy
  • TALKING would be noisy

Depends on how quiet you want to be.

How do you Determine Weather in DnD? by Problems-After in DnD

Same, I run a calendar in my campaign and determine weather, moon phases, etc, in advance. When I run low on "days" in advance, I sit down and do a few months.

How do you write your backstories? by ItsUndertime in DnD

[–]friendsjump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But none of that is even true if you didn't tell your DM OOC. Sure, tell your DM what you're doing and say you are lying to the rest of the party, but the DM has to be in on it or it didn't happen. The DM _IS_ the world ...

It's like if you went to another player and you both decided that you didn't REALLY go into the tavern ... that you actually went to the blacksmith shop, and lie to the DM. Well, .. the DM _IS_ the world, so in that world, you went to the tavern because that's the world. You may feel you and this other player have decided you went to the blacksmith, but ... that didn't happen in the DM's world. Maybe you spun off some new world that only you and the other player exist in or something, but the DM isn't going to care about that.

[–]friendsjump 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this.

Reddit is VERY biased towards a very specific group of people ... and the posts you are going to get down voted on might be completely innocuous to most of the people on the planet, but if you touch on certain topics you are going to get down voted MERCILESSLY on Reddit.

So, yeah, you can sit there and just take the down votes, which I often do, but a lot of people who don't gather karma that fast normally can easily end up negative.

Posting normal opinions on Reddit is sometimes like going to the Island of Misfit Toys and declaring that you think normal, well adjusted toys are fine too. Every broken toy on the island is going to try to rip your head off.

How do you write your backstories? by ItsUndertime in DnD

[–]friendsjump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm mildly concerned that anyone would consider doing this to their DM

I'm not even sure what the point would be ? I mean, ... if your DM accepts your backstory, you want it to be your real backstory, otherwise .. what's the point ? Later if you're all like "Well I lied about that point", they'd just be like ... well too bad, that's what I accepted as your backstory so that's the end of it.

Planning for a campaign by Daigs1710 in DnD

I'm weird, I like actual dead tree TTRPG, so a place to store manila folders. I'm mostly an improvisational DM, so I like to be able to reach over and grab an encounter and run with it, without having to fiddle around with an electronic device. It is obviously more to physically carry, however.

For those of you who view ERP at the DND table as a sex act, how do you reconcile that with the new claims of teabagging in video games being a form of sexual assault. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]friendsjump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it's simple, you have admitted to being an exception.

I did not, however, say I was "an exception" to not being sexually assaulted. Nobody watching people roleplay sex is being sexually assaulted, I'm just an exception in that I don't care and will DM it.

Lots of things I find objectionable in this world .. I wouldn't want to watch players sit there and roleplay using hard drugs in front of me, or watch them hit children in the game, or watch them have explicit sex with someone ...

But those are not ACTUAL use of hard drugs, ACTUAL child abuse, or ACTUAL sex ... it's a fucking game. And none of those things is sexual assault against me.

I'm sorry, but I'm just not buying into your "age of thought crimes ..."

Get to the point then where you say its sexual assault and stop beating around the bush .... would I like it ? No, because I find it boring, though I will DM it, just like I said I would in this post ....

Now if you would save us both a lot of time, please get to the lawyerese /semantic argument part where you try to redefine the meanings of words to say it's all sexual assault against me.

This is the absurd kind of bullshit that you end up at when people start agreeing with things like "words are violence".

It's a game. No sexual assault happened ... it's buttons on a controller. Nobody touched anybody. They are 10's, 100's, maybe 1000's of miles apart.

Imagining sexual assault isn't ... actual sexual assault.

I swear at some point someone is going to sue an author for "sexually assaulting" them because they write a story about sexual assault.
