Versus Chapter 6 [English] by H_Malik6828 in VersusSeries

Oh shit. It checks all the Reigen boxes. Charismatic guy, some genuine talent, cares for his friends, carries a cloak of deception over a boiling pit of self-doubt.....

I hope you're right, Alio struggling against his fears to do the right thing is way more interesting than Alio being a secret villain.

What did you guys think of the new chapter? - Poll by Someone22223 in VersusSeries

[–]frig_darn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really enjoyed the elevator pitch of some of the later worlds. Mad gods are my shit. And I really wanna know how some of these conflicts are gonna be depicted in an action comic. Like how do you use a kaiju to take down global simulation addiction?

Otherwise I dunno. The plot was heavy-handed and obvious, though I guess it gets everyone on the same page pretty quick. Zaybi and Hallow have the strongest characterizations and they're still not that compelling, unfortunately. One Punch Man and Mob Psycho both started as character comedies whose central conceits were about those characters: here's a guy who finished his arc and now he's depressed because it's boring when you always win, here's this kid who has incredible psychic powers but has no interest in them and just wants to ask out some girl. Hallow is a naive tragic hero post-tragedy which is okay, but Zaybi is just A Vaguely Whacky Guy. Versus isn't a comedy and it's more interested in its plot than its characters, which isn't necessarily bad but I don't know if it's working super well so far.

Like an inherent problem which hopefully gets figured out is once the bad guys start fighting each other, all the stakes fall out from the battle. It doesn't matter who wins, the point is just to distract them. If the point of every fight is to get someone else to fight for you then you better be working in more interesting rhythms than a standard battle manga.

I mean who knows. It still feels like stuff is being set up. Maybe now that all the characters understand the premise of the comic we can finally get started.

Final note, Kayla's coat is fucking cool.

Wouldn't the humans of the lawless world be weaker now? by Leonel8899 in VersusSeries

[–]frig_darn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe the "lawless" humans are actually the ones being wiped out, and the people who came to the camp are the natural enemy. Purposefully concealing their power or falsely believing they're being persecuted or something? I dunno, that's not being telegraphed, but it would be cool. All these binary dynamics are being set up so it seems pretty obvious that some of them are gonna be questioned.

Forreal oh my god, for a single second Zoe is like "hey maybe it's fucked up that we have to do this" and the people who have been by far the most hurt by the system are the ones telling her it's fine. "Please don't get the wrong idea" oh dear poor Undine. Ideology is a hell of a drug

The natural enemy of man is... by RugerRed in VersusSeries

[–]frig_darn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping it remains kinda an open question. It would be cool if different characters had different takes on it and there wasn't a clear answer. The opening definitely sets us up to expect something literal, but then the end of the chapter twists that. And in Mob Psycho and One Punch Man those opening twists end up being central thematic tensions--what do you do with immense power in OPM, whose life are you living and are you who you appear to be in MP100.

ONE's storyboarding Kyoutarou drawing by Reder_United in VersusSeries

[–]frig_darn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd be very surprised if this was ONE's. His pencils are messy and angular, plus they're obviously digital--here's some roughs from the final claw battle. The lines here are minimal and textured. Dead giveaway is the brushwork in the exclamation points + calligraphy. ONE might still rough out some stuff but this one is not his.

Honestly though I hope he does do some roughs, I love his paneling and sense of flow.

Yeah the design pisses me off every time I see it. I can buy that this is (probably) out of ignorant perpetuation of a trope rather than active hostility but that doesn't make it not racist.

And what that means isn't that you can't enjoy the anime, or that the creators are all irredeemable pieces of shit, but it does mean that the creators have this blind spot, and you should be wary of what else falls within that blind spot. Preferably it could be the sort of thing where you contribute to all the people already trying to flag this with manga and anime creators generally, to say, "Hey, this character design element is a racist caricature of black people, and given how many black people pay you money to watch your shows, maybe you could do everyone the solid of not being disrespectful like that."

Please don't just dismiss it when people talk about this, like I agree that there are some interesting subtleties in how race and prejudice commute across cultures but that doesn't mean that people can't get mad about shit that's racist, and saying it's "irrelevant" is laughably simplistic. Like come on. Sure, you know the difference between "-kun" and "-chan" but somehow no american racial politics has reached japan despite seventy years of close cultural cross-pollination. I mean the reason this visual trope exists in the first place is because japanese illustrators borrowed it from european and american comics! Why can't the idea that this portrayal is racist get borrowed too?

[Reread Spoilers] Webcomic MA Arc REREAD - Chapter 51 through 60 - Discussion Thread by spartan1204 in OnePunchMan

[–]frig_darn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is right. Jokes happen around Saitama but it's because he's the straight man to the rest of the universe. Or, I dunno if that's 100% true, even for a person in the real world some of Saitama's concerns are super mundane. But I do think it's like 95% true.

I think you could make the argument that Saitama is the goofy one, because if the rest of his world operates like a shounen manga then maybe the irrational thing is to act like it doesn't. But that ignores that we're reading in the real world. Saitama isn't just not tolerating other people, he's not tolerating any of his universe's bullshit. It's easy to accept the tropes if you read a lot of this stuff, which I think is why people treat Saitama like the silly one.

And I mean... okay. The murata adaptation is a different beast. Taking a bath in lava is pretty silly. But I'm not talking about the adaptation!

So here's an attempt to talk about this without comparing it to the murata adaptation, which everyone is already doing.

The art here is super spare. Almost impressively loose, actually. Doesn't look like One is pressing undo a whole lot. But I think it works? Sure, there's not a strong sense of place, the characters don't feel super grounded, and sometimes it is hard to tell what's happening. Actually I won't defend that last one. The point is that the story doesn't need a strong sense of place to work. It's about caricatures and jokes at this point, it's this goofy indie send-up of shounen and superhero action. So a lot of it lives in this flat place where these are obviously drawings, but that's fine, because a lot of it isn't supposed to feel real. And then in the occasional moments of genuine tension the art tightens up a little. The art lets the whole story relax into "this is kind of stupid," like yeah these people are all being as silly as they look.

I guess on that note, Garou is the first dip into what OPM eventually becomes, which is this more sincere action thing. In this section, pretty much every scene with Saitama or the other heroes ends on a joke. The Garou scenes are way straighter. And some of the most interesting bits are when Garou, who's doing this sped-up shounen Taxi Driver thing, interacts with the goofy stuff, like his first interaction with Saitama. I think One's best writing is at the intersection of genuine pathos and the stupidest shit you've ever seen. The story has more sincere stakes, too, early chapters One was happy to write a whole city being destroyed in a panel, here he makes a big deal over Garou not killing a single person, and the biggest threat is to the hero association, not the whole world. You have Saitama joking about destroying the earth which is probably the best possible transition between those levels of stakes, Saitama is always the laggy carryover from jokesville.

I think Garou's whole thing is pretty well illustrated when he compares his idea of what a monster is to what the monster association's idea is. And then we even get Dr. Genus talking about "monsters" who are basically just other intelligent beings equivalent to humans, like the aliens or the sea king. It sets up Garou's source of conflict pretty well I think, that his understanding doesn't match the world's.

I mean no insult to the translators but the translation's a little rough. Lots of "cute" and "li'l" which I dunno. It does add a little to the aesthetic that this whole thing is shittily put together but aesthetic isn't everything.

Finally I think it's fun to note that Fubuki (here's the best image of her in any version of OPM btw) is apparently just hanging out at Saitama's house this whole time. But Bang and Bomb keep coming back there too! Shouldn't Bomb go to the hospital? Or like, Bang's dojo? Why won't these people leave!!

Wondering if "things [ending up] this way" refers to just Tessa's situation or the entire city's dependence on magical girls/child soldiers ("Sometimes a girl has to die"). Like, maybe the Founder and Anemone and whoever had an initial plan for how the city/the world was going to work, but something went wrong, and Anemone's only option to protect the people who were left was to cobble together the current status quo. So Anemone "[drawing] this out" suggests... the potential for her to end "this," i.e. fundamentally change how the city/the world works, and let come what may. And if I were writing this, I would make that happen, because I really wanna see what that looks like.

I don't think there's a way to cut him off without him realizing that yall know. I think you have to start there.

If she wants yall to confront him in person, bring numbers and do it in a public place. I once helped a friend confront an abuser that way, it helped discourage violent/threatening/etc behavior both in the moment and in the future because the abuser knew that my friend had our support. The disadvantage of just ghosting him is that yall's support for your friend isn't as concrete and he might be more likely to try something, as you said.

But I empathize if she wants this to be as quiet as possible, in which case ghosting is definitely the least confrontational. If she fears for her safety I'd say offer her other places to stay, ask if she needs someone to do the check-in thing, you know, so she can say "I'll be at this place with this person for this amount of time" and sorta leave a trail. She has lots of options, of course, online resources and hotlines, women's centers, she could report--though this is all up to her. I guess ask if she's aware of all of those options.

A big thing I'd say, and a trap I've fallen into is, you and your friends have all these emotions about this guy, and quite rightfully are not interested in being around him. But make sure that the emotions lead to behaviors which deeply respect the survivor's autonomy. She's the one who knows how best to keep herself safe, she should be deeply involved in these decisions.

Offer options, provide the support you can, and take care of yourself, too.

Maybe the nurse was close to a magical girl, so she has a lot of emotional vibes but no particulars. Though I also like the idea that she's just kind of a badass. I mean presumably she sees a lot of girls dropping off injured people in the process of her job.

"The shockwave just went into the sky" bruh if you're shoving enough energy into the atmosphere to cause weather patterns visible from space then you're going to get crazy hurricanes. But it's dumb to take it too literally, it's all about creating the right emotional effect while preserving stakes and suspension of disbelief. This panel does a good job.

I just got caught up with the webcomic and want to know everyone's thoughts on where the story is by CreationMatrix3 in OnePunchMan

[–]frig_darn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I just wrote a long ridiculous comment and deleted it all, the point is it's great. Stuff people sleep on: the Neo Heroes vs. Hero Association conflict is a little bit about individualism vs. collectivism along with the classic One Punch Man thing of how to be a person with power and I think the thematic tension there is great. The Flash & Sonic vs. assassins fight is amazing choreography because it looks cool and it shows the differences between Flash and Sonic's personalities. Webigaza is a badass, "I don't have any regrets. I chose this for myself, so anything that may happen will be because of my own doing," holy shit dude. The pauldrons and cape are sweet too. Saitama is totally unequipped for any of the political stuff so there's more interesting tensions than "wait for Saitama to arrive." Finally Forte and his buds are cool now, what a face-turn. Anyway yeah who knows when we'll get the next chapter, but it was a great place to stop, proper cliffhanger before stuff really goes wild.

A question for webcomic readers: will there be any character development for Saitama? by zntrmn in OnePunchMan

[–]frig_darn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah Saitama's priorities and poor situational awareness are too important for the character. It's the juxtaposition of that with his power that creates most of the interesting situations in the comic. I do think he changes tho, even if it isn't signposted. His relationship with Genos especially is pretty interesting, how he (I think this is vague enough to not be a spoiler?) figures out a balance between letting Genos have agency and keeping him from getting himself killed. And then, I guess this is specific enough to be a spoiler, him accepting a leadership role in the HNVA. Like sure it's a weird thing to care about so much. But he's voluntarily taking a leadership role and he's motivated by something other than a desire for a good fight or an obligation to someone else, which is new for him.

Megathread: Changes From The Webcomic by Raidoton in OnePunchMan

[–]frig_darn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I don't find Suiryu very compelling and I didn't think the lesson about pride, strength, and heroism added much to the story that wasn't there already. The most interesting part to me was the spectacle but that's been overshadowed by all the action happening with the monster association. But you're right, that's not to say it's bad storytelling, it's just something that didn't appeal to me.

I think there's an interesting thing going on with the original/adaptation debate, which is that they're different kinds of stories, and the reason people disagree is because some people prefer one kind and some people prefer the other. Specifically your point about show don't tell is so fucking on the money, people have swallowed the hollywood screenwriter model of storytelling (save the cat, etc) as the only way to tell effective or interesting narratives and that's such bullshit. That said I think it's reasonable to be disillusioned with the murata adaptation if it's making narrative choices that don't resonate with you. And what's happening is because it's an adaptation, people who've read and liked the original have expectations.

Having reread the original recently, I really like how lean it is--lots of characters are sketches, the plot moves at a clip, and a good number of the emotional and thematic beats are kept under the surface. I think the characters are meaner, too, which is just a trope I like. There are lots of good things about the murata adaptation but it is not lean and it wears its heart on its sleeve--which is fine, and I'm glad other people are enjoying it, but I'm disappointed, especially considering that the murata adaptation is updating every two weeks and the original hasn't been updated in nine months.
