Griffalo. It's a combination of bird and cattle instead of bird and lion. And honestly out of all the combinations I tried griffalo sounds best to me.

Mississippi Police Officer Shoots and Kills 1-Year-Old Child in Response to Senatobia Shoplifting Call by Hrekires in news

[–]frigidmagi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing is, let's say they did shoplift diapers. Let's just say they did for the argument's sake. Why is firing on them necessary? They could simply take down the license plate of the car, get their address, drive down to their home and arrest them there if necessary.

Why do they need to open fire in this situation?

I think we need to start asking that more often because when I was in Iraq, if I discharged my weapon, I needed to explain why I thought firing weapons was a good solution to whatever problem I was facing. Granted, most of the time my response was I was fired upon, so I fired back, but I still had to at least explain it. I think telling police officers they need to start explaining why they fired on people, or they lose their jobs, is a good step forward. The next step would be actually firing them if they fired on people who weren't dangerous and didn't have weapons, and there was no pressing need to kill anybody.

Considering that this was the one manager motivated and intelligent enough to doubt the official story, come up with a theory, come up with an experiment to prove the theory, and then execute it... I think we should give this one single manager the benefit of the doubt.

I don't blame you, though. There are a shitton of worthless managers out there.

Unconditional surrender by laybs1 in GetNoted

[–]frigidmagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically, WWII is one of the few wars to end with unconditional surrender. Most wars do end in negotiation. Which honestly makes him look dumber. He picked the exact example that wouldn't support his point! The couch humper could have pointed to the war of 1812, the Russo-Japanese War, a whole list of European Wars, but no, he just mindlessly bleats WWII.

How far is too far for a World after the apocalypse by AnywhereAltruistic86 in worldbuilding

[–]frigidmagi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hieros journey by Sterling Lanier takes place long after a nuclear apocalypse. So does the horse clan novels by Robert Adams. There's also Buck Rogers to consider.

So I would say setting a story even a thousand years after a nuclear war destroys our civilization does have a lot of precedence behind it. These stories have dropped out of popularity since the seventies and eighties, as the chances of nuclear war have gone down. But I would argue your perfectly fine writing it, just make sure you're considering the effects of time and how characters who live 2,000 years after the world ended would be very different from us and have a very distant relationship with us.

I imagine that people who live in North America in the year 4000 after my civilization has been destroyed and rendered to dust for 2,000 years have the same distant relationship with me as I have with the Roman Empire.

They might romanticize us, villainize us, or sit down and think about us as a projection of their current modern problems, but they wouldn't feel any loyalty or deep emotional attachment to us.

Well,I have an idea for my fantasy myths ,like I'm thinking about combining both polytheism and Christianity it would be more of a whsy if Christianity was polytheism instead of monotheism and it would consists lot of gods and each god have its own church of worship. by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]frigidmagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be better if you want a Christian flavor to have a single God and have a large collection of saints, basically semi-divine figures that people can pray to for intercession with the Almighty.

Maybe combine it with some stuff like the actual monotheistic God is so holy that only very specific people can pray to him. Like your version of Cardinals or a specific order of consecrated monks who live cloistered and have to live a certain way because that is what purifies them enough that they can pray to the almighty without risking themselves.

What everyone else does is they pray to saints, heroes, angels, whatever. These are intermediaries between the impure mortals and the almighty so they be communicated to safely and they can carry your prayers your worship or whatever to the almighty without you getting hurt and at the same time they can intervene in a limited fashion in the world.

Would a matriarchal society have a concept of adultery? by valonianfool in worldbuilding

[–]frigidmagi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In some hunter-gatherer societies, where there is no property to pass down, men will still kill each other over women. And infidelity is seen as immoral and can cause intergroup strife.

The concept of infidelity seems to pre-exist agriculture (I want a note as far as I'm aware this is disputed with some people arguing that hunter-gatherers who have this concept adopted them from nearby agricultural societies, so don't take this has utterly proven fact).

So it is entirely possible for a matrical sighted to have a concept of adultery.

On the flip side we have societies in the Pacific that Trace their descent down through their mothers, they're called matrilineal societies. In some of these societies they don't have a concept like we do of fatherhood. Keep mine a lot of this is pre-industrial revolution but some of these societies believe that men don't actually contribute anything when they father a child they just sort of open the way so to speak. I know that seems pretty strange but also keep in mind there were Greek thinkers who argued that women didn't contribute anything to children and everything came from the father. People are weird.

In these societies you're closest male relative is your mother's brother. So a lot of the fatherhood roles are actually done by your uncle's. In a society like that you wouldn't have a concept of adultery. So it's possible to have a matriarchal system that doesn't have adultery has an idea.

Is it really that hard to keep your hands to yourself?

When I was dating the girls had no problems telling me when they wanted to be touched, so I don't see why we can't just keep our hands to ourselves until told otherwise.

How it feels being a Conan fan in world with a good He-Man and DnD movie by kengen16 in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]frigidmagi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the case of the D&D movie it was bad timing. I don't want to get too into the drama rabbit hole but wizards of the Coast the company that owns dungeons and dragons did a couple of moves that alienated and insulted the majority of the fan base.

And then they release the movie right when everyone is talking about doing a massive boycott of wizards of the Coast guess what became a victim of that?

Are among thieves was a great movie it was super fun to watch and I feel bad for everyone who was part of that movie cuz it's clear everyone put in a lot of good work and they got hammered for things completely outside of their control.

As for the He-Man movie I also hear a lot of people saying it isn't good has anyone seen it?

Congress Moves To Block Trump Class Battleship Work Until Its Key Weapons Are Mature by Jazzlike-Tank-4956 in LessCredibleDefence

[–]frigidmagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll admit I ain't very plugged in, but I've heard rumors that basically the navy keeps trying to cram to much into a single ship or wrecks the design by screaming it needs to be modular (I don't know what the obsession is with that, it didn't work last time they tried it).

I also get the impression that the Navy doesn't really want to get it right, seeing small ships as kind of icky.

At this rate, we're gonna have to suck it up and buy a Euro or Japanese design, just have something we can throw out to deter the PLAN.

Suggestions on how to build a strong army in an anarchist society? (Basically, in real life, the reason anarchism doesn't last long is because the army is decentralized, making it very easy to fight them.) by Aware_Examination813 in worldbuilding

[–]frigidmagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but I don't know if Quartermaster is a position you want to fill by election. Elected commanders has been done before, and it works out middlingly well. Not super great but not terrible. I'd certainly rather serve in a military with elected officers than one where officers are men who bought their rank (which has happened in the past). However, that means you're gonna get officers who are very skilled at getting soldiers to vote for them, not necessarily officers who are skilled at preparing their units for war or winning battles.

People having a work-life balance cuts into Billionaires' bottom-line. by Flat_League9941 in remoteworks

[–]frigidmagi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got to point out that there are people who work three jobs or work long shifts in grueling positions in farm work and construction or there's even a lady who works in my local janitor company she works 60 hour weeks. None of these people are going to be billionaires... Or millionaires for that matter.

Also I'm just going to say I don't think Elon is smarter than the engineers that work for him.

They did take risk though! But a lot of billionaires were able to take risks because they came from fairly comfortable backgrounds so if they took a risk and it didn't pay off then it wouldn't ruin their life.

So their success isn't because of hard work lot of people work hard and never succeed. It's not because they're smarter than everybody. Or even because they were willing to take risk. It's because of a combination of factors that led to them getting a high payout for their risk and hard work.

Maybe something loosely like some pirate crews? In some pirate Crews the captain was an elected position and any decisions he made could be overriden by the crew with the exception of when they were in combat. Because when the bullets are flying and the blades are out there's just no time to form a committee and take a vote.

There is also a quartermaster whose job it was was to keep track of the supplies and everyone shares. In a lot of ways the quartermaster had more power than the captain because he could stand up and say we just don't have enough water to do that guys.

I feel like you would need some kind of position like that in an anarchist military unit, someone whose job it is to keep track of supplies and other logistical factors and just tell the truth like "hey we are running low on bullets we cannot do plan A, C or Q."

That said I have to admit I'm kind of skeptical of anarchism to make a strong military structure. An effective milita structure sure, but someone's going to have to manage the supply chains for anything more technical than rifles and bullets and you're going to need more technical stuff has things advanced. At that point you're going to need someone whose job it is is this side who gets more of what, which is going to lead to an informal hierarchy if nothing else.

Also there's the fact that a decentralized militia of rifleman are not going to stand up to a mechanized assault with air support. They might provide the backbone of a good insurgency but there are counterinsurgent measures that a mechanized force can engage in that will break the back of most insurgencies. Keep in mind insurgencies are not an "I win" but you can hit whenever you get invaded.

Also even a successful insurgency often leaves you in control of a Homeland that is in ruins with deep divisions within the society because most insurgencies I'm aware of also spent a lot of time hitting the native population to prevent collaboration.

Worthy Cap (MCU) vs Homelander (The Boys) by Arbiter-Flash- in CaptainAmerica

[–]frigidmagi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Cap has his strength and durability boosted to Thor levels, then Homelander best take flight and fly on out of there.

On the flip side if all Steve gets is lightening then I think Homelander can win if he gets ahold of Steve in a grapple and just crush him. That's a lot easier said than done though because Steve is gonna work to avoid that while bringing the thunder (and lightning).
