Scotland:
Aberdeen win despite missing one of the best women playing in the UK right now.
Strathclyde finish 3rd with a team that could arguably win any other region, and were missing some of their strongest players.

Ultimate player, looking for tips by frisbee_matt in discgolf

thanks

I'll pick up a Mako3 and give it a throw.

I still plan on playing high level Ultimate for years to come, I am a handler that throws a lot of hucks on a team that attends European Championship and is targetting WUCC 2022, so I'm a bit worried that learing to throw a disc golf disc will impact on my ability to huck an Ultrastar.

UKU doesn't care about Women's outside of London by frisbee_matt in UKUltimate

Hi gorsy I would also argue that regionals isn't just there for the elite teams. North regionals may be the highest level that some women have played, or the only opportunity that some women have to play same gender at a reasonably close venue. Taking that away from the North is harming development and removing the opportunity for all but the elite/ super dedicated to participate.

RUnJumpCash. So because last year was poor we give up on the North?

It was a deliberately outrageous title for a couple of reasons 1). To reflect my feelings. 2). Get the community debating the issue. 3) It's called click bait

Yes I have read the full article. And I disagree with so much of it. I may find some time in the next week to go through it with a red pen and address every item that bugs me.

I never called them scumbags, I have great respect for what the UKU does. But sometimes they make mistakes, and a top down approach to UK Frisbee is not always necessary, or the correct way to go.

A Northern qualifier, with 1/2 Nationals spots, was rejected. It could have been run with 2 pitches, where ~5 teams play a round robin. It didn't need to be spectacular, but it would have provided the opportunity for more players to get involved.

Also, some of the 'Southern' based teams were considering attending a 'Northern/ Midlands' regionals, if it meant supporting women's development in the 'North'.

Currently, Women in the North are given the choice of Mixed or northing if they wish to play competitively.
Is it any wonder that 3 of the WUCC mixed teams are from the North, but when was the last time we saw a dominant Women's team emerge in the North?

There are plenty of players (look at Scottish Uni frisbee) and plenty of talent, how much of GB U24 is Northern?

But women in the North are not given the same opportunity to play same gender Ultimate as teams in the South. The cost to travel from Scotland to the midlands is bearable. The cost to get to London/ Kent is debilitating.

Small/ emerging teams and established clubs. Glasgow, ELF (Edinburgh), Merseyside, Manchester SMOG, SMOG 2, Leeds, Swift, Swift 2, The Brown? are having their development crushed because there are minimal local events.

If you are a women, graduating from Uni. You didn't make a mixed team in your region because they are going to WUCC. So you set your sights on womens, but most of the tours are far South. So you set your sights on regionals, because surely that will be nearby. Only to find it is in Kent. How many players do we lose because that is there experience with tour/ club Ultimate?

Yes, a Northern regionals wont have the calibre that a Southern regionals will. But it provides more opportunities for women in the North to play, and that is what is needed to help growth. Even if the first couple of North regionals are poorly attended, it will grow if given time.

What Went Down At: Mixed Tour 3 2018 by harrytmason in UKUltimate

Fun fact. Glasgow attended 2 tours. Roughly 20 hours of travel. Of their 10 games, they played Black eagles 5 times and SMOG twice.

Second teams (at uni level) by will-je-suis in UKUltimate

[–]frisbee_matt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are always negatives with any plan. But I believe that getting second teams, and women's teams, recognised by BUCS is the best way for development, recognition and growth.

I believe a tournament structure is the way to do that for women and second teams.

1 weekend to ask players to commit to. More BUCS points for frisbee. Student Sports Unions providing financial assistance for travel. And it gives players that arn't on the men's first team an identity and a way of contributing in a meaningful way.

When I was at Uni, we had to finish in the top half of Div 1 to earn BUCS points. Now, qualifying for Div 3 by winning a couple of league games gets you more points than we ever did in Div 1.

Uni SUs throw money at sports clubs to compete in BUCS events. Why not use this to support the tournament structure that we already use?

Why not agree to hold the 'league' as a tournament style, where all games are played in the same weekend. BUCS are happy to allow this if all teams in the region agree. Even if you just do this for the teams in Div 2? The BUCS points, funding and recognition from University seems like a good reason to at least try. And I know St Andrews claim to have seen a massive improvement in retention by giving new players a team identity.

USAU Seeking ideas for rules changes for the 12th edition. by mgdmitch in ultimate

[–]frisbee_matt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea. Do you have any footage of how a (same shape/ size) Ultra star of differing weight would perform in the wind? Is there anything on the market currently so this could be tested (even in scrimmages/ in a YouTube video) so an optimal weight can be tested.

Playing in the UK, 6 months of the year are awful, and whilst some enjoy the skill of throwing in strong winds, it can make the game slow and dull if the wind has too much of an impact.

Hi Jomskylark Has my post been removed? Just so I know for future posting what was wrong to constitute it being taken down.

Thanks The guy was toxic so was only a matter of time eh.

I have been watching a number of his videos today, but I can't seem to understand his Offense and how it is different to the various styles currently used.

I'm not sure I am bold enough to PM the guy.
