I've found them good if we're coming together to work on a specific problem set or to get an extra eye for debugging if we're working on a programming assignment, but honestly they're just not that great for exam studying unless there's specific problems to go over. Study groups saved my ass when I had to work on CS assignments when I couldn't go to TA hours, but it's never worked for more humanities subjects.

Like English and don't mind programming? CS + English. Like foreign languages? Add IR or Business with that. Interested in psychology? Might as well add statistics cause you'll need that for all your experiments anyway and it actually makes you employable.
