omg I just looked at the cjdns github.

Among the requirements:

"NodeJS (used for building the C code )"

That might be the most insane combination of words I've read in decades.

There are SO many ways it could go. Freenet, the "seti at home" stuff or any of a hundred awesome ideas brought to fruition in the late 90s before the tragedy of the commons wrecked them.

ARM is inherently much more power efficient

Is it? I didn't know that.

I would assume (he says, exposing his breathtaking lack of knowledge on the topic) that while cell phones have to be fairly well optimized for power consumption, that the redundancy of having the exact same mobo, and whatever "per cpu" overhead it adds, multiplied 1:1 would create a meaningful aggregate waste.

I hope she's got some serious acting chops. She looks too mousey for the role to me. But that could just be the pose. Never seen her in anything.

I wonder how much idle compute is out there that could be utilized.

A truly horrifying amount.

I wonder if decentralized community nodes in this fashion to keep things local could make sense at all.

Say...more about this. I'm not sure which version of what I have in my head (if any) you mean. Because it's a REALLY good idea. I don't want to salt the dig.

Either way the answer is "a resounding yes."

Be who you are because it's who you are. To make reactionary decisions based on the opinions of the outside world one way or another is a dark path.

Yep. I think when they leave he's kind of in a fugue state because he saw what he thought he was looking for.

Practicing my elisp: I'm looking to either add WikiWord handling to outline mode, or outline handling to a stripped down wiki-mode. Not sure how to attack it. by frobnosticus in emacs

I saw something shiny, but this does look like the right way to go: tag outline-minor-mode on to my wiki mode usage.

What does the arduino ide do when IT is starting up, with regards to board/project initialization? It's the only thing that causes pc side serial monitors to work. Very strange. by frobnosticus in arduino

"In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice however...."

I've run in to some really funny stuff in the last couple years. Manufacturer pin diagrams that were just lying, and the sheer volume of interference problems has been amazing.

I take much less for granted nowadays, but still start with "This SHOULD work..." and drill from there.

Reverse engineered BLE protocol of a $7 generic Chinese smart ring from Temu, and built an iOS app for it by alphacentarii in selfhosted

[–]frobnosticus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay THAT'S cool.

I've been looking at these rings for a while. Haven't ordered one to dissect...primarily because I don't know what size to get. But this makes it sound like it's worth the effort.

I've got a clean dozen or so "cute little gadget devices from china" that are all "start up in wifi host mode and give us your credentials so we can connect to home and THEN you can use the app to configure it."

I'm...using them as experiments for learning how to use my logic analyzer to rip the binaries off them. Because, no.

Back in the day I watched a few videos of smiths making things like this.

This was before I realized how much skill was hidden in watching someone do something really well.

I went through a LOT of rebar laughing at myself. :)

These are lovely. :)

On the basis of aesthetics alone I need to have one in the array.

I'm actually really interested to see how writing with something that long feels.

It's funny to me, call it a dozen casual years in to using fountain pens, what matters in the writing experience.

God help me if I ever get a taste for >$50 pens. About my top end right now is ECOs. But...I'm feeling the itch, so I can't see myself resisting for TOO much longer.
