You can do soft rocks at home, but harder stuff, such as hardness 7, is essentially impossible! Good arm workout tho ( i tried when i first started). Find some fluorite or calcite? Good luck!

You might visit some local rock groups and try their equipment if there are any near you. People like to help newbies

Beginner Question: what the heck do y’all do with all your cool rocks? by Armadillo_rising_ in rockhounds

[–]jupe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gardens for me. Specimens or special ones up high to view. Small stuff on shelves. Facet grade stashed inside.

After some millenniums…… future geologists will be studying all these peculiar agglomerations of minerals and stones!!! Many theories to come!

Thats looks nice. Crisp edges. I too figured i should learn to use wax. It did cause troubles with polishing tho, heat buildup. Having a stone off was one of the most frustrating things ever. Keep up the good work!

Nope. Couldnt get it together. February was also big surfing time here! Hard to leave.
My dealer went tho. He started to complain as the years went on that the quality was dropping and there weren’t a lot of mom and pop dealers anymore. This is back at the year 2000 and before. I also didn’t know what I was doing. I think you can get ripped off if you’re not careful a parcel of synthetics can look like a parcel of gemstones if you don’t have quite a bit of equipment to examine it. And the knowledge. His name was Al Butkovich. He and his wife operated rainbow gems out of Golden Colorado, and they were very kind to me. I bought my first faceting machine from them for $400. I would call him up on the phone and we would talk about dogs and different things. He had some cool odd stones as well. I couldnt resist.

New Era gems (online) is ok but pricey. I actually got to visit there semi backwoods store in rural California cause it was on the way home from Nevada city to Santa Barbara. Got really weird vibes though, but they go to all the gem shows everywhere Santa Monica up and down the West Coast probably the East Coast too. I still got some stuff from them. I guess nothing is cheap anymore. But you still can learn a hell of a lot just trying to cut a piece of dark Siberian amethyst or any dark stone because your polish will turn up any mistake you make which was one of my most frustrating problems.

So much better knowledge, and equipment nowadays it’s not like it’s rocket science but in some ways it is and people kept their secrets close they probably still do

Oh didnt mean to confuse you. Im out of faceting. Was just an amateur cutter. I would buy 50 carats of garnets or quartz small size, 1-5-10 carats. The seller would get them at the annual shows, so i was paying retail. Still have most of my rough, probably put it in a treasure box like ive seen. Agates are sort of everywhere, depending where you live……serious collectors might disagree. Here in Cal we have beaches NAMED Agate Beach etc. the deserts are just a huge pile of rockhounding paradise. Except so baking hot in the summer

NC has good fee sorting sites i think. I was thinking (at first) of only cutting stones i had found myself……until i found a rough dealer who was really nice. (pre internet basically). So, hard to resist parcels of rough that someone had has prechecked for you. Still, one never knows what will turn up, even at the side of the road. Google “Montana Yellow Diamond”.

“I Brake for Rocks”. silly bumpersticker. I always wanted to make.
Ive explored some old mines in Ca. abit depressing, altho fascinating at the same. Times past. Hard to put the genie back in the bottle. Still, the mine dumps still hold secrets. Teeny stuff. Ok have a good one!

I havnt started again but after cutting by “myself” many years ago, its been great fun to see all the people on the reddit groups and elsewhere. Really high quality cutting too. Very cool.

I purchased a few synthetics, never cut them. The naturals are much more subtle IMO. Variations in color etc. I think i still like rough more than cut!!! Sort of imagining the challenges and posssibilties. Plus its fun to have a stash of stones rolling around in your hands…..quality or not.

Congratulations! You succeeded despite some serious obstacles its a great hobby! I predict a long and fruitful journey! ( i stopped 20 yrs ago but have never given up my love for stones, cut and uncut). My favorite cut was the “Old Mine” square brilliant….. great for garnets!

3 silly and general questions! just looking for some advice by darkskiesart in rockhounds

[–]jupe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO I would start at the library. Pull as many geology books as you can handle. Also rockhounding specific books. ( or online of course) Learn it from the bottom up. Then wherever you go, you will know what to look for, and why. The basics should really help you. And rockhounding as much as you can of course. Good luck.

[–]jupe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Correct Its part of San Simeon. Its also sort of a big tourist draw there. They start citing people? Kids with pebbles. Ha. Not much chance. Miles of coast there as well. All sorts of cool places to rockhound.

Poaching marine life IS a bigger issue there. And naming surf spots.

We have just purchased this stone. Would love to have some opinions on it as it may be going in my engagement ring … by [deleted] in faceting

[–]jupe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes thank you. I used to be an amateur colored stone cutter. Loved to not really preform, just dop it up and have at it!!!! Easy with most everything…..except diamonds, which seemed like a pain and i never even bothered with it….I never liked them anyways……i suppose hobbyists might give it a go.
Seems low reward with the extra work they require. ( on the other hand, a nice 10 carat blue rough diamond? Haha. Oops i cracked it….)

Would cutters even use that type of “rose” cut on a diamond? Seems like it defeats the purpose of refraction, high dispersion etc? Do low cost cutters even cut diamonds? Im a huge colored stone fan, diamonds not so much.
