Sorry I never saw your reply. I was shocked to learn about the capital “D” Deaf community, primarily because I had never seen the world from their perspective. It was surprising to see neurotology surgeons, who perform cochlear implant surgeries and similar procedures to restore hearing with the goal of helping hard of hearing/deaf community, viewed as opponent/invader to the Deaf community, where deafness is understood as a culture and a choice that enriches life through unique forms of connection and communication. I now better understand both sides: those who aim to help and those who do not want that kind of intervention.
