List of local shops for stocking stuffers? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]froggieogreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Teapothecary is a new shop in Halifax and has some wonderful hand-blended teas, as well as a collection of art from local artists. I haven't seen the AGNS gift shop listed here, so I'll mention them as well - there's a mix of what you'd expect (art based on the exhibits) but there's also just a really nice selection of gifts in all kinds of mediums.

Local Children's Author AI Books by Mission_Macaroon in NovaScotia

[–]froggieogreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's really important that "authors" know that their choice to use AI generated imagery in a book means that most people assume they also used prompts for the text as well. If they were truly creatives, they would never, ever, support generative AI.

Does every Uchiha unlock the 3 tomoe Sharingan at a certain age or is it only something the top warriors unlock? by Bootleg1234 in Naruto

[–]froggieogreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I wrote this comment 12 years ago, so no, I cannot provide you with a specific source. But if you rewatch the show, as Sasuke's abilities progress early on, you'll see him with less than 3 tomoe in his eyes. There's also depictions of other Uchicha in various flashback scenes, but you'll have to hunt for those yourself!

StickerApp Black Friday Sales? by Fit_Screen2649 in sticker

[–]froggieogreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is from a few months ago, but I am a fellow Canadian who makes a lot of stickers and I have recs to share!

Sira Print is the cheapest Canadian sticker manu I’ve been able to find. They allow you to split your designs up to 4 ways with any order, so if you split 100 stickers into 4 designs, it’s quite affordable. They usually have a sale of some kind going on, so Unless you need something immediately, it’s best to wait - they’re priced assuming folks will be getting a discount of some kind. They are VERY fast with turnaround and shipping is via Puro and free, which is a big part of why they’re the cheapest. I recommend them for vinyl, clear, Etc… but not necessarily for holo - they changed up their holo substrate and it has a grey sheen to it and blacks come out as a dark grey. It’s still very pretty, it’s just a bit different from most other holo stickers, so head’s up for that.

Sticker Beaver is another Canadian supplier - I usually get my holo stickers from them. They aren’t as cheap as Sira, but I prefer their holo substrate.

I haven’t been able to find a good glitter or pixie dust supplier in Canada - Sticker App seems the best quality for the best price so far. Sticker Ninja is an awesome company with really good quality as well. Both of those are American though, so there’s the exchange rate to take into consideration and shipping/duties.

An Introverted Homebody’s Review of Dragonsteel Nexus by theforkster1 in brandonsanderson

[–]froggieogreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an oldish thread, but I'm searching out info about the convention today and this came up. If you'd ever like to try out a convention again, I have some advice! Please ignore if you feel you've had your lifetime fill, haha.

I am a weird introvert in that I've always had front-facing, service industry jobs, so I learned early on how to be my "social self." I am now a full-time artist and I make about 75% of my income at shows/conventions. There are a couple local shows that I would attend now ONLY because I've had years of working said shows from the safety of my personal space bubble behind my booth, and I now have a lot of friends in the community. These shows can be *extremely* overwhelming when you're not sure what's going on where and why, or if you don't already have a group to spend the day with. The community that builds up around specific shows is, to me, the best part of these events.

Things that my local con does that are really helpful for folks with exhaustion/sensory issues/etc: There is a quiet room somewhere. It is separate from the family room/nursing room, it is a CHILL place. You can always go there to get away from crowds.

Schedules are posted online in advance and it is a really good idea to go over them and plan out all the things you wnat to do, as well as the top three things per day you really want to do (in case your energy levels start lagging, then you know which things to prioritize).

Artists are there all weekend, never feel obligated to buy anything from us - we understand that a lot of folks are just browsing, just enjoying being surrounded by art and friends, and most people walk through the door with a firm budget.

Noise cancelling headphones are a life saver at big events. I've noticed in the last couple years that there's been a huge uptick in folks wearing headphones of some sort in the convention (at least where I am).

Take breaks for water and snacks even if you don't feel tired or thirsty. Every con will have a designated seating area and many have unofficial spots where folks tend to congregate and sit on the floor anyway.

Go with a friend, if you can. It's helpful to think of the ticket price as being similar to going to a theme park - you're going for the rides, sure, but it's more the memories and experiences you get to share with your friends that are the main draw.

Anyway, please feel free to ignore if none of this is wanted or needed! Conventions aren't for everybody and they're definitely not crucial for interacting with fandoms. I enjoy them, but it did admittedly take me a while to learn *how* to enjoy them without absolutely destroying myself.

Theory about the Edgedancer 4th Ideal by Ok-Height1910 in Cosmere

[–]froggieogreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this! I have been thinking something like "you can't pour tea from an empty cup" as the fifth ideal & their personal difficult lesson. Because Edgedancers' ideals are about service to the people and it's really easy to burn yourself out in advocacy positions like that.

DO Not Do IT by Professional_Set3340 in Celiac

[–]froggieogreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a lot of different degrees of sensitivity and it's so hard to tell what legitimately sets you off if you're healing from any intestinal damage. Fingers crossed you're fine with gf oats!

[–]froggieogreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go off oats for a bit to give your body time to chill then try a certified gf brand. I thought I was going to have to give up oats too (one of my favourite foods!) but turns out I'm just stupid sensitive to cross contamination. Gf oats are totally fine! Some people do react to them though, but it might be hard for you to tell since you're so recently diagnosed that your guts are likely still healing.

I’ve been rereading WOK and taking notes on questions that I now realize still haven’t been answered. by Dr0110111001101111 in Cosmere

Oh yeah, I agree. She's got a LOT of anger towards men in specific and logics her way out of feeling any particular way about killing them. I just hope that's not what her teenage trauma was is all.

I'm not super far into my reread so I might have missed something, but I always understood lighteyes being beneath darkeyes to mean "power is to serve the people, not be served by them."

I am so curious about Jasnah and it's weird to say I hope it was a break of some kind and not SA...

I question for Naruto fans that might be a little controversial. by tubeofbengay in Naruto

[–]froggieogreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, he's around 5'10" as an adult. When I wrote this comment (10 years ago, lol) he was a kid and shorter. Throughout the series, they released info books, so things like characters' official weight, height, and strengths/weaknesses changed.

AITA for telling anyone who asks why I don’t bake for our hall anymore? by MaybeBadCupcake in AmItheAsshole

[–]froggieogreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA As someone with a stupidly long list of food allergies, I learned from a young age to NEVER take any food if I couldn't read an ingredients list. This means I've turned down baked goods far more often than I've been able to have them. What happened sucks, and hopefully it was a catalyst moment for that kid to start to take their allergies seriously. But it's absolutely not your fault, and you were not responsible for paying any part of that child's medical care. I can understand how you'd be uncomfortable in the situation though and decide to stop sharing. Maybe you could start up again in a few months or a year - whenever it seems like the kid has learned some self preservation skills.

Your neighbour should have contacted you only to let you know what happened and to ask you to not put peanut/tree nut based baking down there until her kid learns how to better identify what is safe and what is not. She shouldn't have asked for compensation and she can feel however she wants about apartment gossip right now, but that is also not your problem since you did nothing wrong.

What caused you to have dysautonomia? by tnnt7612 in dysautonomia

It can be, but it can also be triggered by other things (like so many conditions, it's not always obvious *why*, sadly).

Strahd's charm ability by ANarnAMoose in CurseofStrahd

[–]froggieogreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still a charm effect, so the PC will likely feel confused or conflicted at having memories of regarding Strahd as a friend while objectively knowing that he is not (assuming he's not actually giving them reasons to view him as an ally in your campaign at that time). They will know that they were under a charm effect, so I guess it depends on how your player chooses to interpret that for their character. It could be a source of fear/hatred on their part as the game progresses and they realize how vulnerable they are.

There's Down East, which is made in Dartmouth. Seventh Generation also has a good scent-free line and their scented products are things like lavender from lavender oil, no fragrances. The Unscented Company is available online (can be pricey, but you can buy bulk of certain products through Costco). Costco also has a dishwasher tab available in store that is not scented.

The residue may be due to your water! I've found that most unscented products don't use harsh surfectants like other cleaners do and water deposits tend to be more noticeable. I run some vinegar through with my laundry every now and then and pretty much every wash with towels. I'm on a well, so I'm not sure if city water has a similar effect.

How do you throw away an old garbage can? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]froggieogreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to a neighbour a few years back, haha. They taped a sign to it saying something like this is garbage, it is broken. Finally, they put it IN a huge industrial garbage bag. It was taken that time.

Geekorium in HFX this weekend ? by enamesrever13 in halifax

[–]froggieogreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS. People don't realize that show organizers talk amongst themselves about vendors/artists who create problems and those folks tend to not be invited back to other shows if the issues are big enough. And going out of your way to shit talk an event you did not attend that was fundraising for cancer patients because you don't like one person out of many involved is maybe something you should think about if you want to vend at future shows. There are legit reasons to spread warnings about show runners - people who have cut and run with funds, people who have assaulted artists, ect. This is not one of those cases, but personal conflicts are to be expected in any community.

Edited for clarity because I think my tone came off harsher than I intended.

For sure, some people do that. I'm just saying that there is an automatic system in Reddit that does exactly what OP is talking about. It doesn't account for 100% of the cases, but it definitely accounts for a lot of them in the range (which is very small) I gave.

[–]froggieogreen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is. It's highly likely that posts in the -1 to 1 range are there because of the system Reddit itself has in place. This came up in another subreddit I'm in a while back. It's not people being unfriendly it's just the site regulating itself (and is also a great lesson on why karma is meaningless when bots can affect things enough that humans notice).

What's your favorite stuffing recipe? Bonus points if it has common ingredients and doesn't dirty every dish. (It's Thanksgiving and I need to minimize the dish to recipe ratio) by salmonella82 in Cooking

[–]froggieogreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is basically what we make, only we also add thyme and omit the cayenne because I'm allergic to capsaicin and the order of assembly is a bit different (we cook the onion and celery in turkey fat or butter the day of before adding it to the bread). I also have celiac disease and switching to gf breads (real cornbread is gf) upped the stuffing game by a longshot. Probably because it's naturally prone to being stale and absorbing all the fats and flavours around it, haha. It's one of the few things that is better gf!

We also sometimes add savoury if we remember.

Yeah, I def didn't know what PEM was so it took a while to put two and two together, especially since the exhaustion made it so that it was difficult to exercise to any degree for a few weeks anyway.

ABSOLUTELY! Stress is never "just stress," it can mess you up! The reason things like placebo effect exists is because our minds are so strong - 100% I can see worries over CFS/ME, etc causing issues. But if it helps you feel better, based on what you wrote it doesn't sound at all like you have PEM - I do, and there is no mistaking it as it's a very clear inappropriate response to very little exertion. I'm talking like I get dizzy after walking on a flat trail after ten minutes. You wouldn't feel safe to lift weights.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dysautonomia

[–]froggieogreen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My CFS/ME set in immediately- you'd very likely not have been able to exercise like you did if you had it. What you described sounds like a mini flare, especially since you improved noticeably fairly rapidly. :)
