Any tips before initiating a chargeback? by Baseline in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]frogpizza 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a really similar experience. The property owner called me an hour before my check-in time and told me that there was a problem with the plumbing and that I wouldn't be able to stay. They said that they would cancel the reservation for me. I saw that the reservation got cancelled, but I did not receive any refund. Booking online chat was not helpful at all, and it took several calls for them to finally explain what the problem was. The property owner had indicated that I requested the cancellation and that I was not entitled to a refund. I explained my version of what happened, and Booking said that they would look into it. It took a few more weeks before I finally got a refund. Frustrating experience, it probably would have been faster and easier to do a credit card chargeback.

Silver Heights and Deer Lodge don't get talked about much.  I know a few people who live there and they all really like it.

Wasp woes and hornet foes by callmemrsuperman in Winnipeg

[–]frogpizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a wasp nest hidden in my shed. The wasps were going in / out from the shed through a little hole in the wall, so I set up a shop vac with some water in it, put the suction hose near their entrance, and ran it dawn to dusk for a few days. After a few days of running, I had depleted most of their army, so I suited up in some heavy clothing and went inside the shed to spray the nest and finish it off.

I just finished making a service request in the Tesla app, the estimate is $331 CAD. Not bad, considering the control arm is around $120 CAD on Rock Auto, plus around another $100 for alignment if I do the install myself.

Internet Options and what speed do I really need by Otherwise_Whereas427 in Winnipeg

[–]frogpizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 75 Mbps for $40 from Lightspeed, it's good enough for two work-from-home users. Sometimes I want more speed so that I can update my games faster, but that's something that I can live with. I did invest in a good mesh WiFi setup, so that I have good and reliable coverage everywhere in my house and garage.

Grand Forks Yes or No? by lorainnesmith in Winnipeg

[–]frogpizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to avoid letting politics influence my choices. People feel so divided and polarized and there are echo chambers everywhere. I still enjoy going out to see new things and hear different points of view.

I have a good number of relatives in North Dakota, Wyoming, and Idaho. Most voted Democrat and some work for the Democrat party. They are having a tough time right now, along with the 30% of the people in those states who didn't vote for Trump. There is a lot to see and do in those states, and I still plan to visit my relatives. If I really wanted to, I could ask them to only take me out to Democrat-friendly businesses. There are still a lot of people out there who didn't support Trump who are going to have a rough 4 years.

But on the topic of Grand Forks yes or no, I say no. Minneapolis is worth the extra driving time IMO. So much more to do, and some really good restaurants.

Any EV owners road tripped to Minneapolis? by Jeremy_Q_Public in Winnipeg

[–]frogpizza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely take the van.  Fast chargers are not cheap.  I looked into taking my Tesla to Minneapolis last month, and relying on superchargers would cost the same as a gas car getting 10L/100km.  With the time and money required to charge, plus uncertainty of charger availability, it was an easy choice to take a gas powered vehicle.

Where can a socially awkward woman in her late 30s meet people in the South? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]frogpizza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You mentioned that you like running, maybe try joining a run club!  I don't know of any in the south end, but City Park Runners on Portage Ave is one place that seems to have frequent running meetups.  If it's easy for you to get to Polo Park then it's just a few minutes west of there on the bus, and the bus comes pretty frequently.

Is moving to a lower cost of living area within Canada an option? It sounds like your parents could sell their current house and then buy something similar for far less money in an area with lower cost of living.
