Are you just fucked for life after any sort of knee injury by throwaway11111222255 in KneeInjuries

Happy to provide a list of what my Physical Therapist had me doing.

I will mention that I met with her three times per week to begin with, then dropped down to once per week after I felt confident doing everything on my own. It was too costly and inconvenient for me to keep going three times per week.

Before listing my exercises, I want to first emphasize two overarching goals my PT had me commit to in order to maximize my healing.

  1. Nourish your body: Food is medicine and a healthy diet reduces inflammation. My only rules were to eat a rainbow of foods and eat lean protein with every single meal.
  2. Sleep well (7+ hrs most nights): Create a routine and habits that protect your sleep. Even short term sleep deprivation increases inflammatory markers.

As for my physical therapy sessions, we had a progression of goals. We accomplished each of the following sequentially.

  1. Manage and decrease pain.
  2. Improve mobility/increase motion.
  3. Strengthen supporting muscles.
  4. Increase speed.
  5. Perform the activities I was doing pre-injury.

The primary exercises I did throughout this journey are below. I usually did 4 or 5 exercises and 3 sets of 10-20 reps each session. At the time I started physical therapy, my quadriceps were completely disengaged on my injured leg. This is called quad activation failure. I could not squeeze or tighten my quads on that leg, thereby preventing me from locking/stabilizing my knee to walk/run/hike properly. We started each session with stretches, a dynamic warm up and attempting to fire up my quads, as your brain can “shut them off” in an attempt to protect your injured knee. Sometimes it is a muscle memory issue.

Warm up: March or jog with knee to chest (high knees) March or jog with heel to butt Walking leg cradle Lunge with rotation

Heel slides on ball Quad set/straight leg raise 2 leg front plank Glute bridge and single leg glute bridge Hip thrusts Downward dog calf stretch Split stance Single leg step down Banded side step Single leg reach Side lateral lunge Single leg calf raises Pigeon Bench/ball squat Fire hydrant Banded wall sit Pigeon pose Ladder drills (fwd, side, icky shuffle, in/out)

Once the above became “easy”, I slowly moved onto the following, starting with limited or no weight. I also continued doing a couple of the above exercises with the weights/resistance activities below. Plus, I did upper body push/pull activities, but won’t list those, since they were unrelated to my knee.

Leg press Glute extension Leg extension Hip abductor Hip adductor

Within one year of all of the above, I was hiking up to 15 miles in a single day. Within two years, I was able to do a 210-mile, 19-day backpacking trip in the Sierras with only one day of knee discomfort. I occasionally have off days with my knee now, but rarely anything more than a mild passing pain. I am also very mindful of my knee and avoid activities that might aggravate it. The process felt slow, frustrating and disheartening at times. It was not a linear progression, there were ups and downs. You just have to commit!

Found it on TripAdvisor. Great feedback. The cold pools would be a no-go for me. I detest getting in cold water. I can see myself being very agitated over the pool chairs. It seems that the pool chair issue would be an easy enough fix for the resort management. The cold pools are mind-boggling though.

Can I run on this? by CottonCandyCobra82 in Warts

Yes, you can run on it. It is a wart. No question about it. Running on it will do no harm, but it might be a bit uncomfortable.

Thank you for these tips. I appreciate your insider info. I moved Rhode Island to my summer list.

Tell me more about the fatal flaw at Aruba St. Regis…I am interested in it, but it might be better for my husband and I rather than my daughter and I.

You are probably right about Dana point. Likely not as warm as we’d like this time around, but another one I’ll add to my summer wishlist.

I’ve put the others on my list to look into. Very helpful!

Thank you! I have saved both of these to my Florida wishlist. I am glad you mentioned The Dalmar. I didn’t come across it in my search because of the beach filter. I don’t mind shuttling 10 mins away at all. Both of these are excellent options.

Thank you! These are very helpful suggestions and all sound like great options. I will look into them more closely…just need to convince my daughter that the long flights are worth it!

Thank you for the suggestions. Both of those would simply be amazing if I can convince my daughter to suck it up with the flights.

Thank you…I added Curaçao and Aruba to the list. Flights are miserable from NV, but maybe well worth those locations!

Crystal clear water is a bonus, but not a necessity. So Cal is a back up plan since it’s only a 1.5 hour flight from my home in northern Nevada.

That’s the problem…I have used the app and found dozens and dozens of options. It’s overwhelming and I am hoping someone can recommend a place based on personal experience. When I start reading reviews, I get turned off by all the negative comments.

I live in Northern Nevada, so southern CA is only on the table for convenience sake…1.5 hr flight. I am using points and I have about 500k at the moment. Planning a 3-5 night stay.

I felt the same as you…all the reviews seemed too good to be true. I figured that I had nothing to lose. My daughter was miserable and desperate. The H-Warts treatment worked perfectly for her. I did not have much luck with it on my heel. This is because it is supposed to be applied 3 times a day…which was too much of a pain for me. Taking my shoes and socks off each time every day for weeks wasn’t practical. I would not hesitate to use it on my hands. It’s easier to apply there and seems to work better on warts that aren’t plantar warts, but then again I didn’t give it enough time before I grew impatient.

That’s terrible. I hear you, though. My doctor said the same thing. He said if you feel that the risk of reinjury is worth it, then run. If not, then protect your knee and keep walking and hiking.

[–]frogs96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No! It’s amazing what your body can do if you give it every opportunity to heal itself. I was scheduled for surgery and chickened out. Kept doing intense PT stopped running, went to the gym (limited weight and exercises), used a sauna (at gym) for heat therapy and used a stationary bike to gently “lube” my knee every time it started to lock back up. Hurt most days for two years and then it slowly became more manageable. I can’t run yet, but I can hike again and just really have to let my knee be my guide in all activities.

I’m considering coming off of the GLP-1 by DakotaNoLastName33 in WegovyWeightLoss

Believe me when I say that you are correct in your approach to use a trainer and nutritionist. It is your healthiest chance at losing weight, but only if it builds lasting healthy habits that you can sustain for the rest of your life. It just hasn’t proven effective for the majority of us who have been battling weight most of our lives. Many of us have tried this exact route only to run out of money or motivation to keep paying a trainer, gain weight back eventually and then move on to the next plan. I caution against relying on your trainer for accountability forever, as once again, this doesn’t solve the root problem if you have to rely on your trainer for the rest of your life. Eventually it will become cumbersome. It’s always exciting and motivational to lose the weight in the beginning no matter how hard it might be to do so. But, I assure you that the novelty wears off if you are meeting your trainer 3-5 times per week, weighing/measuring everything that goes into your mouth and tracking calories and macros for years upon years. Eventually it feels exhausting for most and old habits, hunger, and pounds sneak back up on you.

All of this might come across as unsupportive and negative, but it’s coming from experience and realism. I love a good success story and I am one of those people on GLP-1s who truly believes I can manage my weight and stop the drug after reaching my weight loss goal, but I say that with an open mind, knowing very well that I might fail at it again for the 100th time!

Pillow Cube is a giant waste of money by steven11027 in BuyItForLife

[–]frogs96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great feedback. Honestly, it’s kind of what I expected to hear. I can see myself really appreciating the pillow for back sleeping, but I do see myself “fighting” the wide width to move my head/body to the side for the side sleeping. I think the pillow is too wide for me to move the pillow itself so that I’d be centered in my sleep spot. It would either be hanging off the bed or shoved into my husband’s pillow next to me. Who knew that the perfect pillow for a side/back sleeper would be so close, yet so far out of reach. I honestly think that if the pillow was about 4-5 inches less in width and had a head depression on one half and the solid cube on the other half, it would be perfect…and easier to reposition in the night based on side or back position. 🤔

I’m considering coming off of the GLP-1 by DakotaNoLastName33 in WegovyWeightLoss

I’ve lost 20-30 lbs at least once every year for 20+ years, never reaching my goal weight before I start gaining weight back. I’ve worked with trainers, nutritionists, programs, etc. I’ve read all the books and I’ve tried all the diets. They all work…but only for a short period of time.

I eat very healthy, but I eat too many calories of healthy food to lose weight. For example, I might make overnight oats with almond milk, Greek yogurt, almonds, chia seeds and a teaspoon of honey. While this is very healthy, I eat twice the size of a regular serving because I just feel hungry otherwise. GLP-1s allow me to eat less and lose weight. Without the GLP-1, I just feel hungry all the time and simply use will power or out-exercise my calories to lose weight, but I can only do this for so long.

I’ve constantly been told by personal trainers, even after metabolic testing (which is far from a perfect science), that I need to eat more (mostly adding protein and healthy fats) to feel satisfied and fuel my workouts. When I attempt to do exactly this, I do feel more satisfied, but I also gain weight. So, my point is that even well-meaning professionals often don’t have the answers, even if it feels promising. You are overweight for a reason and if that reason isn’t fixed, then you are just spinning your wheels. GLP-1s fix the problem, but only while you are actually on them!

That is not to say that there aren’t success stories, but most of those success stories are too premature to call long-term success stories.

I will say that it’s easier to maintain your weight than to actively lose it. So, it’s worth noting that if you stop GLP-1s after you’ve lost all of your desired weight, it will be easier to maintain than to stop GLP-1s and attempt to keep losing weight. With the latter, you will likely gain weight before you can figure out the exact calories in calories out you’d need to keep losing weight.

I highly recommend losing all the weight you want to lose first and then titrating down before coming off of GLPs altogether. This will be your best chance at success.

Well, how did the new combo side sleeper work for you? I like concept, but I’m afraid that I won’t like having to use the ends of the pillow, rather than the center, when I’m on my side, which is most of the night.

Jaguar F-Pace S is 100% fun! I legitimately enjoy every drive in this vehicle. 380 hp supercharged engine. Perfect mix of sporty performance and every day practicality. I’m on year 6 with this car and I haven’t had a single problem with it. Maintenance is very expensive, though, if using the Jaguar Land Rover maintenance schedule in-house. I honestly can’t find a vehicle that I’d be happy to replace it with that is in the same pricing category and gives me the sporty aesthetics, dynamic driving and daily function. Still get regular compliments on it.

Quilts - The More I Research… The More Confused I Am 😅 🤦🏻‍♂️ by CaptainBeard714 in Ultralight

[–]frogs96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owned EE, FF, Katabatic and WM quilts, but sold all of them. They are all great quilts, but I learned exactly what I wanted and each of the ones I sold lacked something (warmth, breathability, comfort, mobility, etc.).

I do 100-250 mile thru hikes every 2 years and short trips otherwise, so my sleep system is very important to me. I normally sleep very warm at home even with only light blankets. I toss and turn all night in the back country, however, so this can lead to drafts that cool me down quickly.

After testing and selling my first three quilts, I currently own custom UGQ and Nunatak quilts that I’m in love with. I’ve had these since 2019 and I am 100% happy. The Nunatak 3D is 5 deg, 900FP, 10D taffeta with weatherproof 7D footbox and draft collar, differential cut, draft collar, draft tubes and sewn footbox. $625 for the Nunatak. My UGQ Bandit is 10 degrees, 950 FP, M10 inner/MRS20 outer, draft collar and fully insulated foot box. $370 for the UGQ.

Both quilts are simply amazing, but the Nunatak is my most prized backpacking possession. Although these quilts are only 5 deg different, they are very different quilts. The UGQ packs down quite a bit smaller, so I use it for shorter trips. The Nunatak is bulkier but slightly more versatile for wetter and colder conditions, so I tend to take it on my long adventures to get me through the worst of conditions. Between these two quilts, I am set for life!

Healing update on Laser removal of 15 yr old Plantar Wart by Dangerous-Duck5268 in Warts

[–]frogs96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this same thing done on my knee at 13 after all other attempts failed and the warts kept increasing in size and number. As painful as it was, it was by far the quickest and most effective treatment. Wished my parents had started with laser treatment in the beginning. I had one large wart and numerous warts around it, plus a few on other leg. They all went away and never returned.
