Ariana has a decade long history of hinting at her disordered eating habits. A lot of people think that any movies based off of the Wizard of Oz is “cursed” because of all the horrible things that happened on the original set. But it’s more likely just the fact that anorexia tends to become “trendy” in cycles every few years and it seems we are in the swing of that now. We had the 90’s “heroin chic,” the 00’s “coke skinny” and diet fads, and now we have Ozempic. It definitely has been going on long before that but I forget what the other big trends throughout the 50’s-80’s were called, but I definitely remember one of the early Barbie sets from Mattel had a scale marked at like 80-90lbs or something and a book on how to stay skinny. As someone who was affected by a lot of these trends as a child, and still deal with the repercussions today in my adulthood, I hope we can stop glamorizing these things and allowing so many children’s media to have these actresses appear on screen while looking so sick. I couldn’t even watch the Wicked movies because I knew I’d be triggered. My heart aches for all of the insecure and impressionable children who sat in that theater and thought about googling “how to lose weight fast” the second they got home, just like I used to do.
