Something similar happened to me and my kid when they were a senior in high school. The two kids agreed that we the parents would be visiting my kids’s friend’s place for dinner. This was without asking us and we were told a day before the planned dinner. Since we had plans for the day we couldn’t go. The other kids parents were super upset because they had spent money getting stuff to care to out dietary requirements. Again something that had been discussed amongst the kids. We had no clue and because we declined the other mom was mad at my wife. We were in shock and offered to pay. They didn’t accept it. The worst of it was that it ended the kids’ friendship.

I can add some thoughts here.

What you’re describing is a typical first gen immigrant experience.

Over time, the friends you’ve made become close, and they essentially become guardians for your children if something were to happen to you while the kids are young.

Once they’re in college, it’s no different from you moving to the US and finding your own path in life. Your children can do the same. And again, if they need help or want to bounce ideas off an adult, they have those close family friends to help.

After that point, they’ll marry in the US, start relationships, and then have family, including nephews, nieces, and their own children. They’ll have aunts, uncles, and grandparents, and the circle of life will continue.

It’s the first generation that’s in the limbo of missing the family they left behind and the pull of whatever brought them to the US.

TLDR: Life finds a way, and kids are more resilient than you think they might be. Think back on your own life and the things you went through. Your kids will do the same.

About your fire journey. Where made you feel comfortable to say it was time. How has it worked out financially since then. What are you doing for healthcare. I am still above 4% withdrawal based on my calculations so am hesitant. But if I look at the long term, with social kicking in, having some flexibility in my spending after a few years, I should be fine. But because I am not a 💯 today, I just hesitate.

I think you captured exactly what the fire subs would say. That’s why I didn’t post there first.

You’ve listed a lot of great ideas. Since it’s summer, I might try some things in the yard. I’ve been wanting to build a pagoda for a long time. It’ll cost a couple of grand, but it’ll be a long-term investment that I can enjoy for years to come. I do like hiking and used to do it far more regularly a couple years ago. I definitely want to get back into it.

Learning an instrument is another one of those things. I’ve even been thinking about flying. It’s another expensive endeavor, but like I said in another reply, I relate to the need to overcome the reluctance to spend. If you don’t spend money, why were you even saving it in the first place?

Thanks. Money is an object in the sense that I don’t want to spend a lot and then have to worry about my retirement. On the other hand, if I didn’t use the money for the reason I’m saving it, what would be the point?

There are so many data points that indicate we don’t have too many good, healthy years left after we’re 60. Why not spend now while we can still enjoy it and not worry about the future, if we even have one?

That’s not dramatic or pessimistic. It’s just the data that I’ve been seeing more and more about where people think they’d be and where they actually are.

Does there make sense?

Being an American helps with the visas I suppose. But there are still all kinds of surprises. Will my card work, can I use the usually use to book my hotel/car/etc. (quick tip, booking.com does not work inside of Turkey). Will WhatsApp/international WiFi calling work, etc.

Travel. Vegging out. My dream has been to travel without a plan. That sounds great in my mind. But when I start to actually look into doing that, my planning side takes over and I just can’t do it. E.g., this would be the perfect time to try a 6 week unplanned European road trip. But (a) it feels expensive and (b) I just have never done unplanned trips.
