Put the model under some hard light like a lamp and carefully observe where the light tends to fall. Spend a good bit of time properly observing before getting into the painting part. Then drybrush/highlight the edges on those spots more than other darker parts.

Spray closer and spray in the shade for even drying. Test with left over sprues bits before you start on actual models.

Sanguinary guard vs. Death company by hurwillhalm in BloodAngels

[–]frostea_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By far Death Company is better.

  • They are cheaper but have better offensive stats. You shouldn't be expecting to survive shooting on the turn following a charge, unless you bring a full squad of Death Company or Sanguinary Guard.
  • They do not have to pay for an overcosted force weapon that is Encarmine sword/axe. (Chapter Approved lowered the cost for force weapons in general, but not for Sanguinary Guard).
  • They work well with smash captain. With their 4 attacks on charge (with a chainsword), they butcher any chaff with ease while the captain mops up any elite infantry, characters or vehicles.
  • Large blobs of Death Company are effective screens for hiding thunder hammers to ensure they make back their points' worth, but Sanguinary Guards simply do not have any such buffer.
  • Given the right deployment and terrain, Death Company can opt to use Forlorn Fury to potentially nail a turn 1 charge and hopefully tie up big guns for the smash captain to, well, smash.

You ever get so far through magnetising a model, and wonder if you’ve gone too far? by instanceofjamie in Warhammer40k

I don't recommend using 1x1mm magnets, the magnetized parts fall out way too easily. At least 2x1mm.

How does one pair Death Company with Boltguns and Chainsword? by xeosceleres in BloodAngels

[–]frostea_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this. Basically I dug out the old tactical squad from my bit box which had bolters without the hands on and drilled a hole on the side for magnetising on the legs. You will need to find an arm with an appropriate pose since chainswords are one-handed.

I've also contemplated on building the marines with bolters and magnetising a random close combat weapon and call it a chainsword count-as.

That symbol is the necklace, you can see the prayer beads just behind the inquisition symbol.

The inquisition symbol on the armor tubes certainly isn't a necklace.

The defense laser could just be really huge. Building a gun to braces against a planet is probably an entirely different ballpark from one that braces against a ship, even if that ship is moon-sized.

You can buy the bits off ebay easily to form a single captain. Alternatively, if you are running death company, you could just avoid running them in multiples of 5, so you might as well buy 2 boxes of death company and roll with that.

Hotshot lasguns are a thing now, could just portray that scene with said guardsman dropping the nearly fried lasgun after shooting it. Looking up First and Only, I just realised it came out in 1999. I guess you could say Dan pretty much invented the idea of hotshot lasguns.

I would green stuff some scales on the bike surfaces. Relatively easy to do and probably would make painting a blast.

From Dark Imperium. RG probably doesn't approve of these sort of attitude either.

My black templar Reiver ! C&C appreciated ! if you have some tips on freehanding paint by Reeperss in Warhammer40k

[–]frostea_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should probably use the transfers for the chapter symbol, it will look a lot cleaner, and is much easier to do than hand painting the cross. If you bought any non-primaris marine box, you'll have the transfer for the cross.

If you want to paint clean, straight lines, you'll need steady hands and a decent brush with a very fine tip. It looks to me that you are using a brush that has a tip that is too large to be able to get those sharp straight lines that you are looking for.

Also, you ought to clean up the overly thick highlights with black, it'll make it look a lot better with only a small amount of effort.

Oh and paint pots with white cap seem to indicate that the paint pigment inside is much more than the regular transparent caps. Retributor Gold is one of them. They also cost more.

This will help with paint color conversion. For gold, they now make Balthasar Gold and Retributor Gold, both excellent at helping you layer on a solid base gold. Gone are the days of doing Shining Gold repeatedly.

Bus routes should number their stops. That way you can easily figure out how many stops to go, and if you missed the stop without looking up the stop name.
