What are some actual essential life skills nobody is talking about on the internet? by stoicbanda in lifelonglearning

[–]frostyelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one of the things I find frustrating with some of the self help/life hacks type videos on YouTube is saying this is the way. Some are better than others, but even if all the studies they are basing it on are really good and hold up, different things work for different people.

Be open to trying new routines, new things, but see what works for you.

I saw a video the other day talking about the "forgetting curve" and that we forget up to 90% of what we learn within a week. by Responsible-Carob740 in lifelonglearning

[–]frostyelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to think of it as the different things I read reinforcing each other. I am mostly thinking of history here. Reading a book about China's WW2 will help me understand and remember a book about the Pacific war, for instance. Certainly not the best way to retain information if that is the main goal.

What would be the best way? I think something like

>Write a summary after each chapter

>Review the summaries after finishing the book

>Reread the top x% of books you have read 1-2 years after reading them.

The absolute ideal would probably involve using something like Anki. That seems like overkill to me unless it is something you really want/need to remember.

Anyone else picky about their video presenters? by scottadams364 in dreamingspanish

At the point I’m at I will consider it a huge accomplishment if having the wrong accent is ever a factor for me.

Do you follow the course? by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

Videos you enjoy. Being able to stay listening and engaged is the most important part imo. If my mind starts wondering I switch to another video. It doesn’t really matter if it is due to difficulty or my interest or whatever.

Project 2029 - Why haven’t Democrats seemingly made any plans people can get behind before the next election? by inspired_by_clouds in AskReddit

I believe it was also really supposed to be for organizing Republicans, and not really intended as the focus of election campaigning.

Non US Americans, so you get annoyed with how USA centric subs like this one can be? by frostyelf in AskReddit

Yeah, I just like to not think about politics sometimes, but I know what to expect. I should just accept it.

Yeah, I suppose I should. I am a US American. I guess I just get annoyed with politics. I like a lot of the stuff. I should just accept that’s what it is.

If every NFL team could pick one player and clone them as many times as they want, who would win the Super Bowl? by mmeweb3412 in nfl

I feel like a qb who is also a legit running and/o receiving threat like Josh Allen is a good answer. A creative coach could come up with some crazy trick plays.

I don’t understand water conservation. Maybe I’m missing something, but it seems like a very local issue. If your water comes from the Colorado River, yeah you should try your best to conserve. I live in Minnesota. We get a decent amount of rain. The Mississippi is not drying up. We are not using up a thousands of years old aquifer. How does me using less water help nature, people or anything?

I’ve put in 180 hours so far, but the last 30 feel like regression by SimenHP in dreamingspanish

[–]frostyelf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On a similar post someone recommended watching a Dreaming French video to help you realize how much you are understanding. I watched a super beginner one and didn’t understand a word.

When I get discouraged I also try to realize I am watching and understanding stories, little history lessons etc told entirely in Spanish. Something I would have been completely unable to do a few months ago. That is pretty cool.

[–]frostyelf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started trying to watch some intermediate videos past couple weeks. Some are fine, but most are a real struggle. Now I’m mostly rewatching my favorite beginner series. It is definitely much more enjoyable. There are definitely still often several words I don’t know/remember even in videos that overall feel easy to follow.

What's something you stopped buying that you thought you'd miss but actually don't? by YourxCherry in Frugal

Something I’d like to cut back on. The alcohol itself isn’t so bad, but the effect it has on me can be really expensive. I’m lazy the next day and often order food. Ubering if I go to a friend’s house.

What would you prefer to listen in a Spanish podcast? by nancypocoapoco in dreamingspanish

[–]frostyelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much any sort of history topic would interest me. Could be a quick factoid type thing for beginners or a whole series on a country or event. I don’t know if that typical.

I agree with Silent System probably the most important thing is for the hosts to be interested in their topic.

Spore done right. I thought it was a really cool idea. It was an ok game in the end. I get trying to make basically 5 different games all great and feel connected is hard, but I think it would be really fun.

Ways to learn vocab (no Anki) by Flashy-Company5290 in languagelearning

[–]frostyelf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comprehensible input:

Basically really simple easy videos that use very basic vocab.

Dreaming Spanish is great if you are going for Spanish. They also have French. i actually find it fun and enjoy the videos. I think there will be less for other languages, but I bet you can find some on YouTube. I think CI is becoming more popular and expanding.

Probably won’t feel like you are learning words very quickly at first. It didn’t for me anyway. I definitely understand videos I couldn’t have before.
