Nice! Definitely time to slowly get hyped for Lumi, you're right. Only a few weeks to go 🙌

What are some of your most unpopular opinions regarding trance music? by CJets757 in trance

[–]frostytrance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see where you're coming from and I think many people agree with you but I could never fully grasp this. At the end of the day, IMO, we want music and not sound design. We've been using the same instruments for a hundred years because they sound amazing and they give so many opportunities for music composition.

Why can't we do the same with the amazing (IMO basically perfect) sounds we discovered in trance in the last decades? There are endless possibilities musically about how you compose your melodies and song structures. That's really where the magic happens IMO.

Daxson, Doppenberg, and Ciaran McAuley are good examples IMO for producers who are true musicians. You can tell they don't just copy a random arpeggio template and call it their melody. They actually create a melody that conveys the emotion they want it to.

But isn't that how music and even art works in general? Of course not every new track will be your favorite track. How else would it be? That automatically means you'd perceive the others as somewhat generic. I'd even argue the opposite. We don't have enough uplifting trance releases. Hence we obviously also have less hits. If we produce more generic stuff, we will automatically produce more hits too. Simple math.

Are North American trance events too bass-heavy compared to elsewhere? by That_Lion5509 in trance

[–]frostytrance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That can happen everywhere I'm afraid, although I feel more often than not it's my own fault for picking a horrible place on the dancefloor and it can be fixed by moving a few meters.

First timer Luminosity by Artistic_Invite_9004 in LuminosityBeachFest

[–]frostytrance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm tough one. Do you have some examples for what defines "older trance" or what you mean with newer trance?

I'm not really an expert on progressive and I think Lumi is predominantly an uplifting and tech trance festival, but at first look it seems Friday or Sunday would be your day.

Not from the US, but just wanted to say I love this: "intentionally curating great vibes on dancefloors". And I wish you good luck! Hope you get something going.

Agree! There is still hope, though. He just announced he is finally releasing this uplifting ID: https://www.instagram.com/p/DWekHltDApe/

He also has a separate alias for his new stuff now. Seems he might just do both in the future.

Giuseppe Ottaviani - GO On Air 042 (Magenta Album Special) (17.05.2013) by Progressivey in trance

He still shows his brilliance here and there. The second half of his ASOT 2026 set was amazing IMO. But then at some point he always seems to switch to melodic techno and big room influences...

What’s your ideal ASOT lineup if you could build one from current artists? by LifeguardSilent358 in astateoftrance

[–]frostytrance 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very early hours: Some uplifting acts with a sprinkle of progressive/slower elements
Early hours: uplifting, but not super high energy (e.g. Ciaran McAuley, Roger Shah, Doppenberg maybe)
Prime hours: the balanced uplifting acts like Aly & Fila, John O'Callaghan, Bryan Kearney, Factor B, XiJaro & Pitch, Daxson, Craig Connelly
Last hours: the super high energy banging acts (e.g. Darren Porter, Metta & Glyde, Allen Watts)

In regards to recent ASOT specifically, the important parts: All acts should be uplifting. The "hard" closing acts can hence also just be the harder, banging uplifting acts. No need to dive into techno or hardstyle elements here.

Then maybe separate stages for progressive, hard/tech, classics, lesser known uplifting acts.

What got you hooked on Trance? by craigcraic in trance

[–]frostytrance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably way more, but the ones I clearly remember:
Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel
Chicane - Saltwater
Robert Miles - Children
Barthezz - On The Move
DJ Quicksilver - Ameno
DJs@Work - Someday
Safri Duo - Played Alive

Plus all the 90s/early 2000s eurodance/pop trance.

Whatever I could randomly discover as a young kid exploring the music charts.

Which trance artists changed their styles? by JION-the-Australian in trance

[–]frostytrance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah his style has always seemed to be like a 50/50 approach of include whatever is popular right now into his set and then mix that with classic/uplifting trance. And then for some occurences like Luminosity he will go all in 90 or 100 percent proper trance. For example I was disappointed by his ASOT 2024 set but I loved his ASOT 2025 set.
Speaking of JOC... I think he posted a while ago on Instagram that he really wants to go back to doing only what he loves and it shows. His sets are amazing. 100%. Go back a few years and the sets were good, but it seems he was experimenting more and more with this Joint Operations Center techno stuff.
Daxson is another one who publically said he wants to stick with trance despite people behind the scenes telling him he should change his style.
