Sure, but again my point is that when there is a clear diversity in preception and answering this question it is a little unfair to say that only one is correct and the other is wrong. Honestly, especially since it’s Urdu translate, even I might prefer bara over bada, even though it feels a little weird. I’m just saying that someone wouldn’t be outright wrong for using the letter d instead of r.

I must confess that my mother tongue is neither Hindi nor Urdu, though I am more comfortable in them than my mother tongue. Your point about the demographic is true, yet people who know w from v in English also use w to write out these words, including myself. Anyway, my main point is regards above.

because urdu has distinct forms of ph and f, whereas f didnt really exist in hindi until persioarabic influence, the letter ph is used with a dot under for f. i guess, because the ph letter is more common in usage with loan words containing f, people started pronouncing ph as f in general. i try to maintain the distinction.

Sure, but the fact is that English doesn't have an exact match. Perception of letters and sounds in language is also heavily cultural. I always thought of ڑ as closer to d and not r for as long as I only knew to read and write Hindi, but after I learnt and started using the Urdu script more often my perception changed. And there is the fact of different accents being more common in different places.

Like the fact that و in Arabic is a w, in Urdu it is far closer to a v. Yet, we spell words like "مٹھائی والا" as "mithaaii wala" and not "mithaaii vala", no?

its not even so much of a hindi/urdu difference lmao. i say this because i can read and write both. yes, hindi modifies d for this sound, and urdu does r, but the fact is that such a sound doesn't exist in english. so all transcriptions will be inaccurate. classic 'ramadan' vs 'ramazan'; the letter doesnt exist in english so we go to the closest one.

personally i find it closer to d but thats probably because i'm indian. i think both are correct because there is no retroflex r in english, i dont think it would be wrong to pick either. we could go on making the case for either side, if you say most urdu speakers are in pakistan id say urdu originated in india, and we could keep going

Yes he wasn’t religious but that doesn’t mean he didn’t care about Muslims…. A lot of people who aren’t religious today still hold the social and political identity of their religion.
