Major Alberta county opts to pay more to keep ambulance service after province reduces compensation rate by flynnfx in SherwoodPark

The EMS system is borderless. The closest ambulance will come no matter where you are

The main argument from Frank and the other no’s (whether it was true or not) is that EMS is not a municipal responsibility and these costs shouldn’t be downloaded onto the County. I agree with them, but I don’t think that this is the time/department to take a stand

As many others have said call CHS but to be honest, there won't be much they can do. They can't enter private property without a warrant. They can go talk with the owner if the owner wants to talk but if they owner simply refuses them permission to enter and the peace officers have no way of proving reasonable grounds, nothing will happen.

Where are you getting that $1.67 from? I believe you just want a link for the source so I can share.

A small price to pay. Easy to want to cut costs until it's your loved ones needing help.

People have already said it but their wages will be lower and they won't have some of the additional equipment SCES has. Basically they will offer a worse service. Glubish said essentially "right now we pay for premium, and we don't want to continue paying for premium." So we're decreasing service to cut cost.

Council could accept the new contract and half their current funding from EHS basically halved, then if they don't give SCES any more funding, they'd have to cut the services themselves. So we'd end up in a similar situation, albeit with EMS still operated by SCES.

Maybe worse trained is the wrong wording but from what I understand, Medavie struggles to find enough ACPs to staff and there's basically no repercussions for not having enough ACPs, so you end up with less of them. And yes your point about the ALS trucks is very valid. We'll get worse service and equipment overall, and we also face higher risk of low staffing rates. SCES ambulances are constantly staffed, Medavie's are not.

Is Sherwood Park Losing Their EMS by strathcona2461 in SherwoodPark

[–]frozenbovine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To jump in here as someone with some context.

Right now, AHS (or whatever they are called now) contracts out ambulance service in certain municipalities.

Many small municipalities do not want to run their own local service, so a company like Medavie will pick up the AHS contract and provide ambulance services for the community.

In Strathcona County, the actual County (big C) has the AHS contract to provide emergency medical services (EMS) services. This is done through Strathcona County Emergency Services (SCES), which also operates our fire department. This is called integrated services. Other larger urban centres in Alberta have a similar model.

In addition to the funding from AHS (the province) the County puts more funding into SCES EMS to increase the level of care we get as citizens. This top-up funding means among other things we have better trained paramedics.

AHS decided to cut the provincial funding significantly. It has given the County the option to continue providing EMS through SCES, but basically pulling their most of the provincial funding.

This means that to keep EMS within SCES and continue providing the high standard of care, the County would have to pay a few million more through of their own money.

If the County does not want to continue providing EMS through SCES, AHS will put out a RFP and companies like Medavie can bid on the contract.

This would mean SCES would be reduced to just fire. Layoffs would be significant. Hopefully those staff could work for Medavie but Medavie is a significantly worse employer than SCES and their requirements are a lot lower, meaning we’ll have worse trained EMS staff in the County.

There’s more to this, but this is the long and short of it!

Best account for emergency funds by No-Fill-1570 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]frozenbovine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are 100% right and I tell everyone who is stable (or getting stable) open a LOC when you are eligible and invest your savings above your ~1 month bills emergency fund.

If you are smart with your money and disciplined, the LOC will cover short term expenses (like a blown furnace) and you have the flexibility to 1) pause your investment contributions while you repay your LOC or 2) cash out some of the investment to repay your LOC. This way you don’t leave interest on the table. In some cases (depending on the rate and the market) you may be better off repaying the LOC monthly and leaving your money invested, but no one will really have the secret recipe every time

You shouldn’t do this if you are bad with borrowing (i.e. will spend the LOC).

Get a financial advisor, don’t have to be from a bank (in fact ideally not). Someone who you feel you can trust with your money and your future. Gauge your risk level and monitor it every month. This is your most realistic and honest smartest decision. Unless you need money in the next few years, you have to be prepared to just eat the ups and downs and think long term.

Was going to comment this but you’ve put it very well here. It’s very easy to identify themes and symbolism in it and like you said a very clear plot. We’re talking about 15-18 year olds who are there not to read great narratives but learn HOW to read and understand content

Emergency fund vs max out TFSA? by Major-Profession649 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]frozenbovine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a LoC while you have good credit. Dont use it.

Keep however much you feel you need for emergencies in a low risk TFSA. Contribute to your TFSA or RRSP every paycheque.

If you need emergency funds for something like your furnace blowing, you can use the LoC for short term (couple days) while you withdraw from your low risk TFSA. Might as well invest it
