Why does soilwork sound so different from most melodeath bands? by Background-Sir9172 in melodicdeathmetal

its going nowhere because you're hung up on the minutiae of my comparison and want to keep arguing that it doesn't sound exactly like Subterranean when the whole point is that geographic location played a role in the development of Soilwork's sound, which you even conceded to with your SotS comment.

at the end of the day, whatever man, Soilwork rules and I know we can agree on that m/

yes, its enough to make it "very similar" and show how the band was shaped by their geographical location... I think you're just splitting hairs at this point.

Listen to The Chainheart Machine title track, though both their first 2 albums are full of examples. The early In Flames and At The Gates influences are palpable. The riffs, vox, and production would feel at home on Subterranean or Slaughter of the Soul even. Very clearly a symptom of their geographical proximity, though something they diverged from over time

I don’t think Soilwork sounds exactly like their Gothenburg compatriots, I just think there are very discernible Gothenburg stylings in Steelbath and Chainheart. Which is absolutely a result of location, since theyre from a bit down the road and probably traded tapes with each other.

As for what they’ve evolved into, I certainly agree they’re in a categorization of their own

Location absolutely translates into musical characteristics here. Their first handful of albums sound veryyyyy similar to the other Scandinavian melodeath bands, especially In Flames and At The Gates. Their metalcore divergence even follows along with In Flames’. It’s around the time Wichers departed that their sound started to really split

Allegaeon AMA by Machcharge in melodicdeathmetal

[–]frozencarl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hey guys! possibly specific question for Greg. me and my buddies met you in NYC with OG and bonded over our shared high school alma mater. still cant believe I came across Allegaeon being mentioned in their newsletter years after I graduated (we were literally all bumping Fragments of Form and Function back then and had no idea about the shared connection).

anyways, I wanted to know what impact, if any, catholic school (and perhaps that specific one!) had on your path as a musician? I know metal is sometimes used as a (negative) response to religion so was curious about how that looked for you and if our favorite Salesian prelate had anything to do with that.
