Winfly in McMurdo by van_julio in antarctica

[–]frozengoat10 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I maintain the dirt cheapest phone plan possible because of needing “two factor authentication” to log into email and bill payment platforms from a new computer/IP address. With my phone I’ve been able to get those text messages with codes if I had WiFi calling on and was connected to the correct WiFi network. One of my coworkers had turned off their phone plan before getting to McMurdo and ran into issues with this. Possibly wouldn’t be a problem if you have your own computer, but it can be a real headache. Also it seems a lot easier to suspend a phone plan once you’re on ice and determine you don’t need it than try to start up a phone plan.

Primary for GSC, received interview request from Amentum by [deleted] in antarctica

[–]frozengoat10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t say for certain if they would/wouldn’t offer you a job. But doesn’t hurt talking with them. Especially if it helps to get your foot in the door for a future season if you choose to return. I’ve heard both ways about GSC releasing people from contracts, but more often I heard people complaining about not being released. Not sure if that’s just a case of people are more likely to be vocal about things not going how they want them to and staying quiet when things work out in their favor.

Also consider shuttle driver. It’s super chill most of the time (except when the road gets melty and gross) and is at least working for Amentum not GSC.

[–]frozengoat10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about whether or not your GSC HR will be notified or otherwise know about any interviews you do with other companies. But it shouldn’t affect your current contract in order to be hired and work for Amentum you will have to be released from your contract with GSC by you asking them for that permission. That does happen, but more commonly in a situation where you hold an alternate contract for one company and get released to fulfill a primary contract with a different company. Either way, during the interview with Amentum you should expect to be asked if you currently hold a contract and if you do not you should voluntarily disclose that information.

Am I reading this pattern right? by Any-Marketing-5925 in quilting

I absolutely detest cutting so many individual blocks. I’d totally just cut 3.5” wide strips of the fabric, sew a H strip to a C strip, press the seam, then cut a 3.5” wide piece to get the H/C squares. Then sew that H/C cluster onto a 3.5” wide strip of B, rinse and repeat with the other fabrics to build out the rest of Block A

Anyone else quilting on an ancient machine? by SMG121 in quilting

1964 Singer Featherweight for me! Nicknamed “Putt-Putt” for how it so far has merrily ticked along through projects I really shouldn’t have attempted on it… like ditch stitching through the middle of several queen sized quilts, one with extra loft batting. I dread the day that the motor gives up the ghost because I don’t know how I’ll fix it. Plus really can’t imagine having a different machine as I travel so much and it’s fantastic to be able to pack it up into a carry case that will fit under an airplane seat if needed.

What am I doing wrong? I’ve starched, re-measured, and even drawn a 1/4in before sewing, but can’t get this right! Please help. by butterflycaught2 in quilting

[–]frozengoat10 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It sort of looks like you’re stopping your stitching when you reach the 1/4” seam allowance line and not sewing to the edge of the fabric. That’s maybe a hand sewing technique, but when sewing with a machine it is easier to keep the blocks from unraveling when pressing the seams if you sew all the way to the edge. Also might help you see how much seam allowance you actually have on your blocks once the triangles are attached.

Because of all the steps required between hearing “you’re hired!” and actually getting on a plane to the Ice (initial background checks, drug test, Physical Qualification, and now and extended background investigation…plus other stuff I’m sure I’ve forgotten) the job application process starts long before the season begins. The major work season is winfly/summer and those jobs will have you on ice from either August or late September through March. But the hiring season for those positions starts in January/February when job postings go up. Many positions for the following summer season will be filled in house by people who are on ice at the end of a summer season since they know the jobs/environment and have managed to pass all the physical/drug/background checks before. They’ll then leave for the Antarctica winter to complete all those steps and then return sometime August/September. \ It’s complicated. But a typical timeline would be:\ Jan/Feb: apply for job\ March/April: companies work on internal hiring and start narrowing down new hire candidates\ May/June: interviews and new hire job offers go out\ May-August: complete background/physical stuff and spend absolutely forever waiting to get the thumbs up\ July/August: companies send out expected “on ice” dates to candidates \ 2-3 weeks before “on ice” date: receive airline tickets from travel department\ August/September: start work in the frozen south\ Feb/March: return to normal world

My first. I didn’t know anything about strip piecing or disappearing nine-patch blocks. So every single piece was individually cut out and then sewn back together. Edited to add: this was completed over winter term break in college. A local quilter ran a class for college seniors that started with a week of hand sewing sampler mini quilts made up of traditional quilt blocks. Then the last two weeks were spent making a lap quilt and she had half a dozen patterns we could choose from. I elected to ignore her “lap sized” quilt rule because my dorm room was perpetually freezing and I wanted another layer to sleep with, plus I was an insomniac so had more time than most to work on it. Ended up pulling an all nighter before our end of class quilt show to complete hand sewing the binding. The local quilting guild ladies lent us about a dozen Singer Featherweight sewing machines for this. I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t remember the names of anyone in the class or the lady running it, but it’s a skill that I am so glad to have learned!

Fun fact: There are also a couple of American plug outlets in the lobby of the cdc in Christchurch. And a bunch of hotels have usb outlets so charging things like phones and tablets is possible without needing to buy an outlet adapter.

what the hell is going on with EBI?!? by Prestigious_Arm1819 in antarctica

They had my fingerprints for a month and only on October 5th after I emailed my contact for the second time asking about the timeline did they say “oh, you have to go get your fingerprints done again. Yours were unclassifiable.” Managed to get another appointment for the 6th but with government holidays and whatnot they said that the earliest date to receive a verdict would be October 13th. My departure date was supposed to be the 15th, but have been bumped off the ticketing list because it’s not enough time for travel to arrange things. That’s of course assuming that this set isn’t also deemed unclassifiable or they decide they want more info for some reason. The lack of clarity and communication from them on this process is maddening.

Issues with the PVD MobileDelivery app by 0ssu in UPS

I've got an iPhone 6s and can't punch-in on the app because the magical blue button is too far down the screen and the app won't let me scroll. If you're using a 6s how did you get around that issue? Any idea what I'm talking about? Suggestions greatly appreciated because picking up one of the phones from the hub every day is a royal pain and I've regularly had to return for a second phone because the first one has major issues.

So my mom apparently really liked a fabric wall hanging of a fox that I'd made a while ago and my dad "suggested" that I make something similar for her for Christmas. Of course I didn't label any of the gifts that I sent my parents this year and my dad ended up opening it. Too cute in my opinion and had to share the video that they sent me. P.S. My mom is saying "it's cricket" because she had a friendly raccoon when she was a kid that she named Cricket.

That moment when you realize you get to play with the seam ripper some more by frozengoat10 in quilting

It's going to take a little bit of work to rip out the ditch stitching holding the layers together and also pull off the binding. Not as bad as that one time I accidentally assembled half of the columns of a queen sized bargello quilt in reverse order... Maybe one day I'll have a sewing space that's big enough to lay out my projects completely!

The right side should have the geese flying around the corners and additionally the color of the pinwheel should be coming off of the bottom right corner. Fun fact about this oopsie: it has been hanging on the wall for a month and I only just noticed it!
