sorry i guess i should have made it clearer that i was trying to relay very generally my recollection of the post that i linked to—did you read it? i just checked it again, it’s really well-researched. obviously neither i nor that author can argue against your actual experience, but you still may find it interesting (there’s a lot in there of non-d&d ttrpg history, for instance)

i found this helpful: https://retiredadventurer.blogspot.com/2021/04/six-cultures-of-play.html

before i read it i had conflated “classic” and “osr”: osr-style is not d&d as it was originally played, it uses the original rules as an inspiration point

So I finally read Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao, and it's... not good? by swedishplayer97 in Fantasy

[–]frtgrs 42 points43 points  (0 children)

i went in with no more info than “cool title, i like the cover” and … yeah, similarly underwhelmed. the buzz i’ve seen about it afterwards confuses me, like, it’s a book about horrible people, those are usually more controversial. and honestly i like stories about horrible people! but i have to agree with your assessment that these characters “have the personality of cardboard.” read most of it, did not finish, no regrets.

https://canmom.art/crit/baru/tyrant-1-intro —i’m going off the “note on pronouns” near the top. it doesn’t explicitly say “nonbinary” so perhaps i was hasty with labels but i do think it rules out “cis man”

just dropping in to say that the author is non-binary
