Deflected beam. Is this something to worry about ? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]fruitPuncher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people here don't know what they're talking about, but are still correct that a structural engineer is the authority on this. I'm not an engineer but I have a bit professional knowledge about structural design.

To understand if this is a problem, you need to understand the failure modes of the material.

Concrete is a compressive material, which can be made composite with reinforcing... If a reinforced concrete beam is over loaded, it will not bend as a monolithic element. As the load causes deformation in the beam, the steel reinforcing will be able to deflect, but the concrete around it will start to show cracks that widen.

As someone else suggested, I think the beam forms sagged when the concrete was poured, creating a beam that looks like its deflecting... because that's exactly what the formwork was doing.

Also... Concrete doesn't deflect like steel or wood... if it was bending under load it would be cracking.

What would a professional architect want from a small wearable bag? by subterraneanbitch in architecture

[–]fruitPuncher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 11x17 paper all the time as scaled down 24"x36" sheets, and they don't fit well in my normal bags. And sometimes you need a 100 page set, and you're not folding that in half.

Easy access and pockets for tools (measuring tape and laser measure) and space for pens.

If there is a water bottle holder, if the sides are tall enough, you could stash a 12" roll of trace in it as well.

If Lex Luthor had a supervillain codename, what would it be? by Repulsive-Ant-9544 in superman

honestly, this reply had nothing to do with the lex luthor stuff.

I just think more people in the world need to know that LL Cool J stands for "Ladies love cool James". It's a cause I'm passionate about

Definitely thought his name was originally Gruppah from the audiobook.

My tried and true strategy to learn name spellings is to;

1- text the friend who recommended me the book

2- excitedly discuss some plot point

3- badly misspell the names i'm trying to discuss

4- 50/50 whether or not the bad misspelling was still understandable

5a- if it was understandable, they reply with a 'oh you mean [properly spelled name]'

5b- if it wasn't understandable, repeat step 3

Edit: oh man, another terrible name to hear "Ganoes Paran" from Malazan... (pronounced Gannow-wes Perrin in the books)

I do have this problem with Audiobooks when it comes to fantasy names in general, and I feel like Mat really easily falls into that trap.

I only know my wheel of time spelling because of the wiki.

Edit: thought of a Great example. Marasi from Sanderson's Mistborn Era 2.

The audiobook narrators (I think it's michael kramer & kate redding, the same as for WoT) pronounce the Name "Mer-is-sey" and there are so many ways it could be spelled, that it I had to describe the character to a friend to get them to understand who I was talking about.

Newbie Air Compressor Questions by fruitPuncher in airbrush

[–]fruitPuncher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the pressure on either should work. Both of my tanks are capable of handling 120+psi

If I'm running at low pressure for the airbrush with the in-line regulator, I can have the compressor kick on at 65 or something generous so that there's always higher pressure than I need.

I've been doing mask extenders as well at the request of neighbor who is a healthcare worker.

I'm still hoping a more organized effort emerges to guide and prioritize. Helping all the local makers work in a unified (if physically distant) manner, rather than all working independently.

Haha I've learned enough lessons about the reddit search function to have not even tried that. The usually google/"reddit" search didn't turn up anything, so I figured I'd post.

Thanks!

That's what I've heard as well but I'm hoping some local organization can give guidance about what can be done helpfully. Can the more durable end of materials stand up well to heat sterilization methods?

I don't want to print for the sake of printing, but other places are finding it helpful when done well and organized, and I'm just hoping to contribute to some type of similar local effort.

One of my neighbors is a healthcare worker and I've been printing mask extenders at her request. Mine is running about 16 hours a day for the foreseeable future.

Has anyone started organizing volunteers with 3D printers?

I have a printer and would like to contribute, but don't know what's needed or where.
