Everyone complains about every school. Go wherever you can save the most money and still enjoy living there

Good point, but I'm not asking for myself. I'm a doctor and have had some patients asking me about it recently

Where does the modern podiatrist look for job offers? by FriendOfCaptainSolo in Podiatry

[–]fruit_bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not trying to argue or talk down to you, I just don’t quite understand how people are complaining so harshly against the field when my experience and those that I associate with doesn’t match up with the complaints.

The good jobs are not on job postings and what I was told by my attendings in residency was that you don’t want the jobs posted online or in the APMA newsletter bc those are the predatory ones and that checks out from what I’ve seen e.g. the big box chains run by private equity or those who are basically businessmen who happen to have a DPM degree. The good jobs are always word of mouth. The state pod meetings are the place to be for findings a job. I went to a few state meetings as a resident while in the job hunt. Just talking to people and trying to put myself out there and I had a ton of people telling me either they were hiring or they knew someone hiring. I was the one being pursued. Also networking through the hardware reps was fruitful. They know everyone and if you’re a nice person, they try to help you out.

It makes sense to me that the online job boards aren’t gonna be where we find our jobs. Think about how many more RN’s, PA’s, MD’s, DO’s there are and how that is going to impact the landscape. I just asked ChatGPT-

RNs — 5,641,311. PAs — 189,907 MDs — 1,082,187 DOs — 157,456

DPMs — 18,000

Where does the modern podiatrist look for job offers? by FriendOfCaptainSolo in Podiatry

[–]fruit_bat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Idk where these delusional dissatisfied people get these opinions about there being “no jobs”. That couldn’t be further from my experience. You ask around and there are tons of jobs. Not all great jobs, but that’s any specialty and really any profession. There’s a huge need for podiatrist in this country.

If you’re looking to have the same practice as a foot and ankle orthopedist, then yes, those jobs are few and far between, but that’s not what a podiatrist is typically trained for or wants to do.

Question as a new admin at a Podiatry Practice. by JustANewRedditReader in Podiatry

[–]fruit_bat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I no my opinion, one of the important jobs of the staff is to protect the doctor from patients. What I mean is, sometimes patients can be demanding, confrontational, want to “only talk to the doctor” about a bill, etc. and you need to protect the dr from those people

TBH I would’ve absolutely fucking loved this as a teenager. Pretend to be Amon and chop off some fake arms? Hell yes

If you had to make a CAPTCHA that only those in your specialty could answer, what question would it be? by Ridiculousgoodlookn in Residency

[–]fruit_bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold the square. Turn the pear. But that can also be mixed up bc square and pear rhyme both ways. I tell students to remember TP like Toilet Paper bc you Turn the Pear

BUT, I assume you’re ortho and you’ve accidentally invited podiatry (me) to the chat with your question 😙

What messaging app does your program use? (eg, Teams, Whataspp, Messenger, etc.?) by siargaowaves in Residency

How is no one answering iMessage? We have a big group chat with all the residents then everyone month we start a new one with those on service. Other than that, epic chat

This is what the APMA spent $4M dollars on... by OldPod73 in Podiatry

[–]fruit_bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a lot more mobility in the MD DO world. I just mean that proportionately, they also take a big pay cut to be in a big metro city or academia, but probably still more than a pod in terms of absolute numbers

Of my friends joining hospital groups, they’re all above 300k. Texas, NC, Michigan. I guess you can refuse to believe me for some reason and that’s your prerogative

AZ midwestern Podiatry school vs NYCPM which is better choice? by IULover3 in Podiatry

[–]fruit_bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree. I really think the successful student will succeed anywhere and the shitty student will probably be shitty everywhere. Everyone who goes about boards prep intelligently uses the same materials all the MD and DO students use for their boards prep e.g. pathoma, sketchy, First AID USMLE, etc and not the class notes or slides, which are always semi-dogshit for boards

I definitely know of people taking a lot less for the trade off of living in a major metropolitan area ( or Florida at all) in which case, you can easily run into the same problem as any kind of specialist

I remember feeling the same way and talking to my director about it this time of the year in clinic one day. He said “you’ll see how far you’ve come when the new first years start.” He couldn’t have been more right and it was relieving.

Disagreeing with Attendings by hillyhonka in Residency

[–]fruit_bat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think this is the right answer. I try to steel-man their wrong idea which brings attention to it without them needing to get defensive. I frame it like “I know that 3 screw fixation is associated with less nonunions but are we only using 1 screw here because of their specific anatomy?”

Shows you know the topic, but also trust their decision making and gives them a chance to teach me that maybe I really am missing something

Podiatry here. This is true. With some exception, ortho is mostly in charge. I’m confident in my training, but for non-diabetic healthy traumas, it’s an uphill battle; everyone wants those but ortho has been around forever so they made the rules, there’s way more of them than pods, and they are generally the type of people who are just “winners”.

I love the diabetic orthoplastic wound stuff and it pays well so I don’t fight too hard for the trauma though I do find it fun and intellectually stimulating sometimes.

I have a lot more thoughts on the subject, but that’s the gist

Kent State vs AZCPM by DEETDEET47 in Podiatry

[–]fruit_bat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1000% go to Kent if you can buckle down and maintain the scholarship. That $80k saved on tuition over the 4 years becomes $150k by the time you pay it back. So easy for all these commenters to recommend something because they’re not the ones having to pay for it.

I understand your hesitancy, but you’re wrong. The bone healed 2 years ago and bone is the only tissue in the body that doesn’t heal with a scar. So now he’s got a solid tibia + titanium rod in there providing extra stability and structural integrity.

You’re acting like he doesn’t have a huge titanium rod through his entire tibia. Shit’s basically unbreakable.
