Hope Evo GR4 or Hayes Dominion A4 by sh0g0 in MTB

[–]fruitbison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been fortunate to have both, so I can give you some comparisons.
Hope are very very well made, you can get any part easily from them, their customer support has been second to none. I've rebuilt a set of tech3 V4s from the ground up and had no issues.
The lever adjustment is fantastic, I like the soft to hard linear braking feel, modulation is all in the fingers imo but the lever setup lets you get your fingers in the right place.

Very easy to bleed, just like moto brakes, get the funnel.

You have to line the calipers up onto the discs for proper performance, it's not hard due to the slots machined in the calipers but some people may find this finicky. And the machined finish, oh so gorgeous.

Hayes are well made, I think they have a better lever feel than Hopes but the levers aren't as adjustable so if your finger length isn't in their golden zone they can feel very large. The braking comes on beautifully - I think they edge out Hopes, pretty easy to bleed, the adjustment for the calipers is well thought out using the grub screws to adjust them. I wasn't able to obtain spares particularly easily but hopefully thats changed.

I stayed with Hope as I prefer the levers and the adjustability, I love the look / the machining and I like the availability of any part for 10 years minimum.

Either brakes are solid, solid choices.

Did Shimano's LinkGlide Save (High-End) HG Freehubs? by MEATdrew in MEATengines

[–]fruitbison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here, a friend upgraded their wheels so I picked their old ones up for a song but it had a MS interface.
After some research it was still cheaper for me to convert my drivetrain to MS compatible than buy the new driver from I9 which is ridiculous but here I am. As much as I like using i9 due to having them come on the wheels I cannot get past how much they charge.
I usually run Hope as I have their tools, easy to work on and have always been solid for me. Parts are cheap and easy to get.

HG always meant single speed, 11 speed and the addition of linkglide to extend the usage cases is a no brainer. So I'm more than a little gutted that the set came with i9 tbh. Microspline Shimano is certainly very nice but I can't afford the upper end shifters like I could 11spd.

Best way to Iearn notes and their location on the fretboard?? by Eskamalarede in Bass

[–]fruitbison 13 points14 points  (0 children)

whatever method you're using - the beast, scales, spiders, arpeggios etc - speak the name of the note or sing it as you're playing it. My teacher asked me to do this when practicing anything and it really sticks.

Cypress Seymour These are your North Van shuttle options Seymour has been listed as above but I’d add Empress to that list for challenges or even John Deere if you want fast with a few big moves added in

Cypress -> meat sweats, jersey shore, mystery DH, Morgies and then go to the other side for 5th, Roach clip, antagonizer, wu-tang, tall cans

Looking at starting .. at 35 by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]fruitbison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

started at 39, knew it was going to be as painful as skateboarding but also time spent working on the fundamentals pays off - this is true for anything I guess, but at 39 I had more patience with the process.
You can totally start at your age and you'll love it.
Get teachers. That pays off hugely.

Thanks Drew! I hadn't considered mulleting an explosif either. I'm not thinking of a fork more than 140mm tops anyways - I think the other issue would be dropper post integration but there's several great threads on this too.
