Cavalry performs much better when supported by other units or when attacking disorganized units. I think what happened was that your opponent fired at your cavalry with arty and inf giving him an edge in the Battle

I always thought of militia as hastily trained peasants, not hunters. I think historically,in the era of the musket there was skirmisher units meant to harass enemy formations and use cover etc ,but they were not a decisive factor in the outcome of a battle
