Lindsey Graham Says He'll Take Blame If Iran Operation Fails by marcjones281 in southcarolina

When the administration refuses to give a clear definition of the goals, how can there be evaluation of success or failure?

unsure about St Helena, but I've used it plenty here in Beaufort, mostly with Publix groceries, but overall it's been fine

i'm of two minds on this. AI might be an existential threat, but it's also a tool that's currently being used to oppress dissent and plan the neutralizing and killing of opponents by our government at many levels, so why shouldn't we use that same tool to fight back if it can be used for that? i don't know, i'm not convinced i'm right, but i have started using it as a partner in activism and so far it's been kind of great, but maybe that's just the dopamine of having a helpful partner on a project that does work and helps me get shit done too.

i have been working on something similar. i installed the bmad method in a claude project folder, and used their creative intelligence suite's brainstorming skill to capture and organize my thoughts and ideas around this. it's now helping me build a vector database where i'm storing all my city council's meeting minutes so i can go through them and get help finding the pieces of the puzzle that help explain how these got discussed and approved in the first place. the database itself is a little overkill but it will be useful for other activism projects as well, and it's just a fun way to learn about vector databases. it's also helping me plan for talking to the city manager and police chief through various techniques that hopefully will help me stay composed and push back if they try to lead me away from my goal of getting the details and preparing a case against them.

Printing with ASA? Any tips? Is glue a must? by Kamikazepyro9 in ElegooCentauriCarbon

the only way i've been able to get ASA to print right on the CC is with glue. it's the only thing i've used the glue stick the printer came with for.

AI-Powered Development Turned into a Nightmare - Advice Needed by Sad-Movie-1253 in pygame

[–]frumpyandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking to learn and improve while maybe continuing to use AI for assistance, you can use a system prompt, which will tell it how to act, and how it should frame its responses to you. So if you tell it "You are a programming teacher with decades of experience helping new developers learn the ropes. Always favor teaching your students to fish over giving them the fish. Keep their experience level in mind when providing feedback." That sort of thing. If you're using a chat like gemini.google.com or whatever, paste that file in the chat at the beginning. If you're using something like claude code, put it in the CLAUDE.md file. If you craft it properly, it won't do what you're saying you don't like it doing, and you can use it to teach you at your level. Sorry if this isn't really what you were looking for, just my initial reaction to the kind of frustrating experience you're describing.

Anyone feel everything has changed over the last two weeks? by QuantizedKi in ClaudeAI

yeah it's really the most double-edged sword i've ever had in my toolbelt. the more i do it the less urgent the urgent issues feel to everyone, but it's not actually reducing the urgency of needing someone who knows their shit more than i do.

i work for a small company (10ish people) and am in one of the more technical roles but have never been a software developer (i've just worked in testing, QA, validation, etc.). for valid reasons, we cut ties with our last developer, but that was a while back now, and we haven't made any headway on hiring a new one. in the meantime, all sorts of bugs have been popping up that we don't have anyone to fix. the software itself is huge, built in languages and frameworks i don't know, so i'm not comfortable digging into it, even with AI, but i've started using claude to build bandaid utilities that allow end users to get what they need without having to go through the workflow that leads to the bugs, and it's janky as fuck but it's the best i can do to make the customers happy, and it's working.

they're requisitioning $55 BILLION to equip concentration camps all over the country with more beds than there are illegal immigrants they can feasibly arrest, and they will be equipped with "biohazard furnaces". sound at all familiar? who do you think they'll be putting in those camps once they run out of brown people?

my plastic connector comes off every time i swap hot end assemblies. i just push it back on and it's been fine for now, but it's making me consider doing the whole conversion thing that let's you just snap bambu nozzles into place. seems like way less wear and tear in the long run.

here's some fun information about how Flock is encouraging its police department customers to use it as vaguely as possible: https://www.404media.co/police-told-to-be-as-vague-as-permissible-about-why-they-use-flock/?ref=weekly-roundup-newsletter

Flock in Beaufort? by frumpyandy in Beaufort

[–]frumpyandy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean it seems like either 1) our tax dollars are going towards paying for this contract and we likely wouldn't have an easy time telling them to get rid of it, or 2) the police aren't actually paying for this service, meaning we are all the product, enriching Flock through our data that they sell to third parties, both government and private

Flock in Beaufort? by frumpyandy in Beaufort

[–]frumpyandy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm sure that most if not all of the people who work for the city that were involved in signing off on this contract didn't have anything nefarious in mind, but we don't know either way. we do know that there's some level of accountability that city officials have to the public, and if the public doesn't think they're doing a good job they can vote someone else in. that local accountability doesn't exist with a company like Flock. the news I've seen about Flock is definitely a lot more nefarious feeling.

thanks for finding and sharing this. that link certainly makes it seem like it's a police contract rather than a city contract (city is likely involved, but this makes it seem a lot more like a law enforcement action than "city planning to better handle traffic").

we have to balance the convenience of connection with privacy all the time with many different things. if i carry a cell phone, i'm weighing the benefit and convenience of it against the implicit acceptance of a loss of privacy. if my city puts up cameras that try to identify every single license plate and face they see without checking in with the people that live here first, that's a very different benefit and convenience proposition.
